We were picked up on time by Evan at the home we were renting in Pebble Beach.
Evan was both friendly and professional and gave us city slickers some interesting information about how the vegetables we eat are farmed.
All in all this was a pleasant 3 hour diversion.

Where does your food comes from? This van tour, guided by Evan Oakes, agricultural consultant, stops by the colorful fields of Salinas Valley to see more closely what is cultivated and how. Learn about soil preparation and management, seeding, planting, irrigation and water use, crop rotation, equipment and skills needed. Why the soil and climate in the region are optimal for growing.

Walk into an artichoke field to look at the plants close-up. See the equipment that washes and sorts the chokes, and the process of packing. On my tour, watched harvesting of lettuce and strawberries. Field to table--crops picked and packaged on the spot. Learn how farm laborers are compensated.

At a distribution and shipping facility, watched trucks bringing in fresh strawberries for coding, immediate cold storage, and transport.

Went by organic farms and learned about specialty crops and flower growing that are the focus of smaller operations. Also learned how vine berries are cultivated under hoops.

I highly recommend this tour to anyone who appreciates food and wants to see why California is called the “Bread Basket of the World.”

My wife and I have done organized tours around the world. This ranks among the best, perhaps because it's so obvious that it's easy miss that it might be something you can tour. And if you're going to tour it, you might as well do it in the Salinas Valley.

Evan, who has done these tours for a few decades, an ag scientist, knows his stuff, and proved it with his non-stop three-hour narration that started with artichokes and continued with stops at fields of lettuce, celery, Brussels sprouts, strawberries and a bunch I don't remember.

It's one thing to see the harvesting and packing – and the in-field assembly lines – from a car as you're driving by on the highway; it's another to stop at the edge of the fields and get a lesson in what exactly is happening... and then following that to the coolers, where they'll stay until they get trucked (or flown) to their final destination.

Bottom line: Excellent.

Evan was an excellent tour guide. He shared a lot of his knowledge of the agriculture industry. My background was produce manufacturing and it was great seeing everything on the farming side. The tour was very educational and there is a lot to see! I recommend the tour to anyone who is interested in learning more about agriculture and learning about where your procedure come from.

This was an amazing tour! Evan was incredibly knowledgeable about the Carmel Valley and surrounding areas. He clearly had a strong relationship with the wineries and it was overall a phenomenal experience. Would love to book another tour with him in the future!

This tour was above and beyond our expectations. We loved that Evan took us to a fallow field, shoveled some dirt and explained its composition and why it is so fertile. Loved the depth of everything he talked about and showed us, including how avocados are sorted by size, how they are cooked, and how to eat them 😊 Especially enjoyed driving along the fields and seeing crops being harvested, and having Evan explain exactly what was happening. Also given lots of geological info about the area. Once Covid is over, would love to come back and do a driving tour. Thanks so much. These 2 hours have truly been the best of our time in California. Also really enjoyed the Pezzini Market, and LOVED the fried artichoke hearts!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Tour! Evan was full of information and a great guide. The 3 locations we had tastings at were great...and some people in our group got to take grape vine clippings to try to grow (for fun!). We will highly recommend AG/Evan and probably take another Tour when we're back in Monterey/Carmel.

Great tour of three outstanding wine tasting rooms plus a working vineyard. Staff knows Evan and treats his clients with utmost care. Pies are generous and wines are exquisite. And Evan provides plenty of background and history along the drive.
