Top notch museum with a unique mix of new and old. Upon entering the staff person gave us a complete rundown of what we were to see which enhanced the visit tremendously. Enjoyed the Old California rich paintings and blown away by the photos of Jim Kasson, a superb collection of large format images. Worth going to the museum just for his photography. Not your old musty dully museum, lots happening in those historic walls. Highly recommend

La Mirada has always been a place that is quiet and classy. The staff are wonderful to speak with. The grounds are are so nice and preserved with old growth roses and other native plantings. La Mirada has several different events, shows, displays of local art and well known world art. Parking is terrible, but a short walk is well worth the visit.

...terrific location; gorgeous gardens, excellent exhibits and can be rented for weddings, etc....simply a TON more than one might reasonably expect to find in a city of 28,000....But Monterey is one of those places that almost always meets and then beats one's expectations---from restaurants to facilities to friendliness...La Mirada fits right in.

This is a nice, small, local museum; unfortunately, it really isn't worth the $15 entrance fee. A significant majority of its exhibits are devoted to local artists and "projects." One large space has photos by local high school and junior college students, that are good student work, but still student work - not quite ready for prime time. Another large gallery is devoted to two local artist (Fassett and Gafill) who have worked together somewhat playfully for a number of years. But this is definitely not their best work and often, frankly, abysmal. Their still-lives, cobbled together in an afternoon apiece, are just plain bad. The highlight of the Museum (aside from a gorgeous print of Moonrise over Hernandez by Ansel Adams) was the extensive exhibit of photographs by William Giles. Creative and stunning. If this Museum had a nominal entrance fee, I would recommend it for a short afternoon visit, but not for $15.

The galleries were closed but there is an older home with wonderful Spanish tile and fountains and a beautiful garden with roses as the highlight.

Absolutely beautiful place to visit. Too bad it is so hidden. Most people don't even know it exists. Maybe better signage on Freemont Avenue will do the trick ?

Monterey Museum of Art is really two museums in different locations. LaMirada, is just outside of downtown, in a lovely historic mansion, while the other is on Pacific St. is near the historic section of town. Both are lovely places with very good art collections. One our recent visit there was a free jazz concert as well as Matisse cutouts entitled "Jazz" as well as some very good work of local artists and an exhibit of the yearly posters for the Monterey Jazz Festival. Both of these museums are worthwhile visits.

Combining a historic building, beautifully furnished with period pieces and art with the two-story Dart Gallery addition, La Mirada showcases some of the best local art. Don't miss the rhododendron gardens outside the main entrance and the beautiful rose gardens in the courtyard. Enchanting!

Check the website for the current exhibit. We saw a fabulous exhibit of Edward Weston photography that shows through October 2, 2011. The house/gallery has a rose garden and a rhododendron garden on the hillside. Open Wed thru Sunday - when you visit one museum you get a free ticket to visit the other museum a short distance away.
