Lotusland is considered to be one of the top 10 botanic gardens in the world. Situated in the foothills of Santa Barbara, California, this 37 acre botanical wonderland is home to more than 3,000 different types of plants from all around the world. The estate gardens were created by Madame Ganna Walska, who owned the property from 1941 until her death in 1984. Lotusland is home to several extraordinary plant collections and around each corner there is the unexpected - a surprise of unique garden design and plant species. The collections include rare cycads that are extinct in the wild, an unparaleled cactus garden, palms and euphorbias like most people have never seen. Additional gardens feature ferns, aloes, lotuses (bloom only in the summer months), water lilies and bromeliads. Lotusland horticulture philosophy is organic, using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Reservations are required to visit. Tours are Wednesday - Saturday at 10 AM and again at 1:30 PM. Open Mid February through Mid November.

In the summer, the best time to see Lotusland is in the morning to avoid afternoon heat. The two hour tours are led by guides who try to limit the size of the groups to ten or so. Our guide kept us going, but did pause to answer questions. The estate is gorgeous, with bromelaid, cactus, fern, aloe and cycad... More

Beautiful, peaceful, usually not too crowded. If you love plants... This is it! Nothing to dislike, really.

This private garden has something for everyone, it is lush, extravagant, eccentric, enchanting, not to mention many very unique including some nearly extinct plants. If you are a botanist or not, you won't be disappointed. The creator of this garden has a story of her own which will be of interest to some but to me that is the side... More

First off, you need to reserve in advance as they only have a limited number of people (well, actually cars) per day. It is a bit pricey as far as museums/gardens go, but you are not going to ever see another garden that compares to this treasure. While some times of the year are preferable - summer for the lotuses... More

Don't miss the docent tour. You will learn a lot. Many different gardens. Very impressive. The George Washington Smith building is not open to the public.

A docent took us around the botanic garden and before we knew it, two hours had gone by. We were a wee bit too early for the lotus. We saw some, but we noticed a lot of buds ready to bloom in one to two weeks. As the saying goes: "you learn new things everyday", we learnt the difference between... More

During my family reunion, we busted Lotus Land with 11 of us from age 6 to 84 years. Everyone enjoyed and was delighted. We didn't have a docent to guide us but enjoyed the beauty nevertheless. Two kids, 6 and 9, were as engaged and interested as the adults. They especially loved the pond with fish and the seashell "chairs"... More

Wear comfortable shoes ( you walk for 2 hours ) and have water. It was a rare 100 degrees that day which made it very difficult, but the docent was great, and everything was so interesting !
