The horses were great but the guide was kind of disappointing. We asked her for a specific type of horse (based on our experience) and she didn’t seem at all inclined to try and accommodate our request (she had already selected our horses in advance). Another negative thing about our experience was that the guide was not very friendly or talkative. For example we asked her several times to slow down because her horse was way ahead of us because we wanted to talk to her but once again she didn’t make much of an effort to slow her horse down even though she said she was trying to. Our last complaint was that we signed up for a 90 minute trail ride on the beach but we probably ended up riding for about 1 hour tops when we had to ask her to add in an extra loop which made the ride 1 hour and 15 minutes total but she didn’t seem very happy about giving us the amount of time we were supposed to get. We didn’t have a very fun experience and definitely won’t be back.

Ruth was awesome ! We opted for trail ride for an hour. This is our first horse riding experience. Initially we were bit scared to mount, but after couple of minutes everything is a cakewalk. Chitchatting with Ruth throughout the journey made the experience delightful.

Take your business elsewhere. The place seems charming on the outside, but there are so many issues, where do I start....

Mostly the condition of the horses. 2 or 3 times my horse was injured and I was not told until AFTER I paid and mounted for my lesson. Once he had injured his EYE...I was riding a popeyed horse with a fly mask to cover the injury. I found out later. They lied and told me the flies were bugging him. :/ I found out from a volunteer that he had scraped his eye in the pasture and it was infected. I hate liars....

Another time I paid, mounted and was in the arena. I was hoping to show my husband my awesome cantering skills....until they told me he couldn't canter because he had a SCREW pulled out of his foot earlier. THEN WHY THE HECK WOULD YOU RENT HIM OUT!!!???

Then comes the lack of professionalism from the "workers" there. Especially the girls in the front office that act like highschoolers. They shouldn't be treating the customers that way....very rude, very short and if you are not a pro-horse handler, they act like you are annoying them.

Finally, more evidence of the lack of care is the amount of outbreaks of equine related diseases this ranch has yearly. Strangles, equine pigeon fever....etc...All the neighboring ranches stay away due to a lack of quarrantine/procedures.

Steer clear!!! Go to Garrod Farms instead (Saratoga, CA)

Took my older kids there to celebrate their first day of summer break. This was their first time on horses...only my daughter had been on one, one time..she was told by her guide that that didn't count. I agree, but just funny how it was said. My other 2, this was their first time. A lesson on how to control the horse was not given, until after they were up nervously on the horse. Nerve wrecking for a mom to watch, but they got through it. Since they knew this was their first time, a little lesson before getting up on the horse probably would have helped us all. While the kids really enjoyed the trail ride, the guide, Casey seemed easily irritated. My daughters horse seemed to have a mind of his own and didn't want to keep up with the rest of the bunch, so she just let him do his thing while trying to guide him in the right direction. Was she forceful, of course not, this was her first time on a horse...so the guide told my daughter that she was acting like a 5 year old so the horse is going to treat her like she is. That statement was really uncalled for. Overall, they enjoyed their experience, but my daughter clearly stated she would request a different guide if we were to come back.

A bustling place. Seems a bit disorganized, but people are friendly and horses are well behaved. The ride was amazing on nice trails.

Chaparral Ranch is a beautiful, relaxed place to ride. The scenery is beautiful and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Their American Quarterhorses are well trained, happy horses--easy to ride. Shawn Mott, the owner, is a true California cowboy!

The trail ride was amazing. My daughter loved the whole experience. She loved her horse Sunny. It was a great experience for a 8yr old.

We took the one hour ride for our daughter. It was her first time. Before the ride, they made sure she understood the basics and made sure she is comfortable. Her horse was the slowest one in the group, but they stopped where needed for her to catch up. The trail ride itself lasted about 40minutes (signed up for 1hour) because the horses were little faster. To make up the rest of the time, they extended the ride in their railed course. This was actually fun as the kids were left to control the horses themselves (with no lead horse).
