The coastline here it is pretty breathtaking and diverse. The fog laps the coastline making it more and more of a New England feel. Quite a lot of places along the area to camp and explore on your own. Love to come back when we have more time.

Beautiful rugged coastline with many sharp curves in the road! Giant rock formations can be seen in the water that are sometimes covered with many birds such as cormorants and pelicans. Also, lovely lighthouses can be seen at Point Arena and other locations.

We drove Fort Bragg thru Mendocino and Sonoma Counties. IMHO as nice as Big Sur, which we did 4 days later. We skipped Marin County to get to the city quicker. The great part of Mendo/Sonoma coast is the quantity of places you can stop for food, for a hike, for a scenic view. Lots of hidden beaches and estuaries... More

Beautiful coastline, but in August it is cold and foggy. Temperatures were in the low 60s. We didn't mind the break from our 100 degree temps in Utah. The best time to visit Northern California coastal areas is in October, when the fog is gone, and temps are actually warmer. I couldn't wait to travel due to my work schedule.... More

This quaint and truly charming town is always fun to visit. Beautiful ocean views abound. There are wonderful restaurants and stores. Great place to spend a couple days. Not terribly much to do but a great place to "be". unforgettably beautiful. Have a drink at the Mendocino Hotel, walk out on the headlands, have a great meal at one of... More

Tis is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline we have ever seen. There are great places to stay and great restaurants along the way. Weather is usually cool, even in August and very comfortable.

Driving up Route 1 along the Sonoma and Mendocino coastline is an adventure itself. It's rare to be on a beach level as your climbing, twisting and turning as the mountains meet the ocean and every canyon amongst them. Mendocino is one of many small towns founded by logging or farming that have reached their peak and are finding new... More

We found driving along the coast will simultaneously evoke two strong emotions; Delight, with the amazing natural beauty of the California coast, and Terror, with white-knuckle cliff-edge driving conditions. If you drive from north to south along the west coast, like we did, you will be driving along the outside western edge of a steep cliff for a majority of... More
