Neighborhood: Downtown
Downtown Los Angeles is a busy metropolis of towering buildings, bustling streets, and industrial warehouses. There is a distinct multiplicity of cultures here with a growing influx of business professionals and hipsters. Many call the evolution of Downtown over recent years gentrification. New lofts, bars, hotels and restaurants are popping up regularly. Downtown is home to some of the very best restaurants in the city leading the LA foodie scene, plus it is the location of cultural and sports venues including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Staples Center, and the Coliseum at the University of Southern California.

The Colburn School is a first-rate music school. The American Viola Society held its recently completed 2018 Festival here, and it was very successful, in great part due to the Colburn admin, faculty, and staff. They also hosted the International Primrose Viola Competition for us at the same time, and they really made it work.

The Colburn School offers music and dance concerts by their students and with guest performers. Yes, the LA Philharmonic is right across the street but if you want something more intimate, if you want to seriously see the stars of tomorrow, catch a concert at the Colburn. The tickets are inexpensive -- the chamber music one we went to was only $10 -- and we were so close to the stage, we could see guest cellist Gary Hoffman's bowing so clearly, his every expression, and how the musicians exchanged mere glances to communicate. It was fascinating. And the music itself was a revelation. Gary Hoffman was joined by students who were so accomplished, played with such passion and finesse, I felt like I'd never really heard the pieces before. The concert was in Zipper Hall, which was warm and intimate with great sound and sight lines.

This school is amazing. Visit some of the the concerts and shows, including student shows. They have a great program for community and children as well. It's well worth checking out their program as well as those of the LA Phil next door!

If you love classical music and the performing arts, The Colburn School is a phenomenal place brimming with extraordinary talent. Recitals and concerts take place almost daily on its campus in the divisions of the Conservatory, Community division (CSPA), and two Academies (Music and Dance). The first-rate faculty cultivate and nurture exceptionally gifted students. Watch and, more importantly, HEAR exquisite performances in an inspiring educational setting. Many events are free. If you're near Disney Hall, take a stroll across the street to witness great music making.
