About
The Basement is the number one Escape Game center in the US, with one continuous story line and 4 seperate experiences/chapters to choose from. We offer an immersive experience where you will be locked in a room. You will then have a set amount of time to find your way out using the hidden clues, key, trap doors, and items within the space. Various events will "distract" you throughout your journey and make the task of escaping slightly more difficult. Can You Escape? HISTORY: Established in 2014. The Basement: A Live Escape Room Experience opened for business with its flagship room "The Basement" in October 2014 and has since opened two more experiences: The Boiler Room and The Study. Dark House Entertainment is currently in the process of opening 3 more locations throughout the United States.

Scammy Business Practices Make the Courtyard a BUST
Sep 2021
Very disappointing experience in the Courtyard. Although private bookings are great (when I beat the elevator shaft room they lumped us with a pair of strangers that were clearly high/intoxicated… not great), they shouldn't let groups of 2 people book rooms when they (1) needlessly give only 45 minutes instead of customary 60, (2) offer no hint system on request (their policy is to only provide hints when they feel like it--and it is not often enough when groups are obviously struggling on one step, (3) refuse to go over puzzles that were missed (instead asking you to pay again at a 20% discount) and (4) charge 50% more than better rooms in the region (Questroom, Hatch Escapes, etc). I've done 50+ escape rooms and I cannot for the life of me justify this place's absurd practices.

As for the room itself: The Courtyard is terribly overrated in my experienced opinion. It's a cool set, but the story makes zero sense, there are very illogical puzzles, the actor was pretty pointless apart from one task (that, again, doesn’t make any sense). The Elevator Shaft room is much better (and could reasonably be completed by 2 people). Also, don't come here with a group of tall people - the crawl spaces are not big enough for people over 6 ft tall.

All of this is a terrible shame: the Basement clearly has the budget and creativity to make cool games like the Elevator shaft. But I've never been to an escape room venue that so clearly WANTS people to fail and then pay again to try once more. Overall, these are scammy business practices that are very consumer unfriendly.

Go check out Lab Rat at Hatch Games, Perfumer at QuestRoom, or Galaxy Quest at 60Out instead. Just as high quality and much better experiences (at a better price). And if after all this you still book this place: wear clothes that are old and you won't care to get dirty. Like, possibly really dirty.

Terrible
Apr 2021 • Friends
My friends and I have done 100 escape rooms. This was terrible. The actor berated us for coming close to her, despite that being a part of the game. As a result, literally nothing happened, we just lost $144, and left wishing we never took part in this.

WORST

Absolutely 100% DO NOT do the online experience. Complete SCAM. Worst escape room experience of my life. The live actor is giving you clues the entire time let alone you have to listen to her, no offense terrible winning the entire game because she's "in distress". We finished the room with 20 minutes left. Mind you 2 people out of the group of 4 did not speak 1 word because there was nothing to figure out or say. I have done over 30 escape rooms, this didn't come close. We were asked to use Google to find combinations. I was able to log into zoom through google chrome per their instructions but was unable to get any video because "its something they are working on". I did get to see the map and clues. I had to log in through the zoom app could only hear. The host was a nice person but led me to no solution and offered the owners number to call for further instruction. At this point I was over it. You're suppose to have 45 min to escape and in 25 min we were given about 8 clues asked to look up google twice and somehow managed to get the person out of the room even though she made it seem like she died. Worst. Experience. Complete joke.

This Place is a MUST for Escape Rooms in SoCal
Feb 2020
By far the best Escape Room company I've played! I have played all four rooms here with my friends, and we've had an absolute blast in all of them! The production value is incredible, and highly immersive! I really mean it when I say these rooms are immersive, they honestly do feel like horror movie sets. These rooms are truly examples of escape room art! They don't skimp out on the game play, which I would say is the most important part. The staff has also been very helpful! They really do commit to their roles, and go out of their way to make sure you have a good time! I used to work at an Escape Room, so I know when they go out of their way when they don't have to. I'm a little bad with the names of the employees, but here's are my individual reviews of each room:

THE BASEMENT: Passed
Our Game Master: Kyle
Our Actor: Tim (I think)

This room is a very strong first impression of this business. The production value is MIND BLOWING. If you're a fan of horror, you will fall in love with this room. It's incredibly artistic with its presentation. There are so many little touches that add a whole lot to the experience.

The game play is very strong too, however if you're not a fan of collect-a-thon type games, you might not vibe with this room. Without giving spoilers, this game really rewards you for your progress, how they transition to other parts of the rooms are very surreal and clever. I'd say the biggest challenge can come from finding all the pieces to the puzzles, so keep a sharp eye out! Tim also added a lot to the experience, while being in character, he subtly helped coordinate our team, it was much appreciated! He really added to the immersion.

Our game master Kyle was very energetic and engaging after the experience, he was very kind!

THE ELEVATOR SHAFT: Failed (99.9% done)
Our Game Master: Ryan
Our Actor: N/A

This room is pure genius of ingenuity, it's crazy how well they work with so little space. This room is fairly compact, but trust me, they really know how to work with what they got. The technological features of this room was truly outstanding, the water features to the mechanical immersion of the elevator itself, damn, it felt even greater than being on a movie set, it felt like we were actually in a horror scenario in the real world! You will be impressed with the ingenuity and presentation of this room.

Most of the puzzles in the room are pretty clever and well designed, however one of the puzzles requires a lot of reading to understand, which I personally don't think works that well in escape rooms. I enjoy being able to have a hands on experience to figure out a puzzle, subjecting a puzzle to pure reading without much interaction gets a little jarring, because you're not really interacting with the environment around you, you just have to ponder for a bit at this board on the wall. It was still fun! Just a little jarring and underwhelming.

Our game master Ryan was super engaging after the whole experience, props to him!

THE STUDY: Failed
Our Game Master: Anna and Abigail (we did this room twice)
Our Actor: Glenn (I think)

Oh boy, this room was the only room we had an unpleasant experience with. Don't get me wrong, this room looks beautiful and it's fun, but this room needs a lot of work with its game play. Our group did not perform well in this room, we ended missing about 30% of the room where we failed, all because of one puzzle. As to not give spoilers, there is this one puzzle, where the answer to it requires doing something that looks legitimately dangerous. Our group had considered the solution, but we laughed it off, thinking that we would actually hurt ourselves if we did it. Because of this, we never got the solution, and we failed the room. We went to the do the room a second time, and upon realizing the solution, we felt very frustrated.

Overall, this room is still fun, most of the puzzles are still designed well enough, and the inclusion of the actor is actually REALLY clever, I loved Glenn's performance so much. It's probably the least aesthetically impressive room, but still cool by all means. In the end though, I feel as if the puzzles here need work, but it can still be fun.

THE COURT YARD: Passed
Our Game Master: Anna
Our Actor: Glenn (I think)

I am thoroughly convinced I will never find a better escape room than this. The concept and execution of the room is...astonishing. They actually set out to have a room feel like you're outdoors, and they are SO clever with how they utilize that kind of environment. The puzzle design felt SO satisfying, I think this rooms is the absolute best with their game play.

This room really has the best of both worlds with visuals and game play, it's so unique, and if there is any room you need to do, it's this one, by far.

Our game master Anna went out of her way to make sure we had a good time in this room, and I really mean that. She really cared about our experience.

Best escape rooms ever
Mar 2020 • Family
We have been to about 20 escape rooms, and these were hands down the best. After reading about them, we came with the plan to do 2; ended up doing four and had no regrets. The time and effort that went into doing these rooms far surpasses anything else we have seen, and the actors who participate in them add about 100% to the experience. These are a must do.
