Neighborhood: Downtown
Downtown Los Angeles is a busy metropolis of towering buildings, bustling streets, and industrial warehouses. There is a distinct multiplicity of cultures here with a growing influx of business professionals and hipsters. Many call the evolution of Downtown over recent years gentrification. New lofts, bars, hotels and restaurants are popping up regularly. Downtown is home to some of the very best restaurants in the city leading the LA foodie scene, plus it is the location of cultural and sports venues including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Staples Center, and the Coliseum at the University of Southern California.

We did the online escape room due to lockdown restrictions in our country - a really fun way to spend an hour doing something different. Puzzles were tricky but not frustratingly difficult. Host was great too!

I got stuck in a room with 9 SUPERHOT chicks for an hour!! The secretary was BUHLAZING HOT. The Asian woman that took our picture was COLD. NONE OF THEM were as smart or noir savvy as me and they ALL kept getting in my way PANICKING stopping me from solving the mysteries and running their mouths confusing mixing up our clues but I WAS GOOD WITH IT because THAT WAS SOME GOOD FILM NOIR FUN STUFF. It literally felt like we were in the 30's or 40's and the pressure was on, especially when I think Humphrey Bogart started threatening us! It was AMAZING! As the director of L.A. NEO NOIR FILM FEST, I BREATHE film noir, I actively seek out film noir / neo noir stuff damn near more than many other things, and this is the real deal, as real as it can be, and I'm putting this on my website and treating all of the winners of my festival and everybody else I can find whom I like to this place as long as it exists. Escape Room L.A. Rocks! The next time I go I'm taking a bunch of not so gorgeous but smart problem solvers with me! I'll probably just take three hot women next time, but I can't say enough good about it. If you don't like Escape Room L.A., you have a personal problem. It's something wrong with you.

Over the summer we came and did the Alchemist and loved it. Big space, enough for 12 people. You weren't able to do the entire room, but it was still a ton of fun.
Last weekend we did Cavern and there were too many people in the room and the props were starting to fray.
What a difference a room can make. I would highly recommend the Alchemist and not the Cavern.

I wanted to like this more than I did. There were many good things about this escape the room. However, there are better, more exciting efforts in Los Angeles. The puzzles here were cluttered and the "aha moments" were often lost amidst the simultaneous frenzied activity. It is well crafted and with the exception of one puzzle near the end, eminently solvable. Our group of 11 completed 23 out of 25 accomplishments. We did not escape. We made some mistakes early and would not have escaped even if the one unfair puzzle did not exist. Without this puzzle I would give this three stars and recommend it. But it does and I can't. There are much better escapes in town.

We have been lucky enough to enjoy over 30 escape rooms around the world, and this one is entirely different.

We booked for two of us as we have done with every other one. We called escape room LA to request if we could arrive early we were told that this was not possible due to the other guests, I asked them what guests? They said another 10 players were going to join us. This was a complete shock I told them this was unusual and we were not informed, they said it's in the small print which I still can't find. We then asked for a refund which we were denied.

We had no choice but to attend as we had already paid. The other 10 players turned up and also did not know we would be in the same room together, no wonder only 26% of people escape.

This is a shocking attempt to make as much money in the shortest period of time possible.

If you are new to these games go somewhere else as you are suppose to play within your group not with strangers.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your experience here, but your comments are so off base I feel the need to reply. I have played nearly as many escape games around the word as you have, in in almost every one of them, I have played with other groups that I did not know. Your surprise at this very common setup is, at the least, surprising. Our game capacity is clearly stated in at least six different places on our website, as well is in the booking terms that you must agree to before completing a purchase. If you are the experienced player you say you are, it's baffling you would make a purchase without reading even the most basic info about what it is you're signing up for. Your "shock" at having to spend an hour playing a game with people you didn't know ultimately says more about you than anything in your review. Maybe a quiet board game at home next time would be better suited to your personality.

My friends and I all live in Los Angeles. We've done all of Escape Room LA's rooms, both in-person and virtual. This last experience we had with them was the worst and they have completely lost our business.

We had booked a virtual room two weeks in advance. They're supposed to send a Zoom link ten minutes prior. Our room was supposed to start at 2pm, link to be sent at 1:50. After 20 minutes, we had not heard from them - I had tried to call, only got voicemail, and emailed twice. I finally got a phone call from John, apologizing, that the host lost internet service and they could send a link now if we still wanted to play. (Keep in mind - if the attendees are running late, there is no flexibility - there are no refunds and you won't get to play.) So I asked if this would be a courtesy game given that they ran late and we had all been waiting for 20 minutes (also, I know Internet issues happen, but there is no excuse for not calling us sooner.)

I had checked with my group and they said they still wanted to play. I then emailed John, told him we would still play but that we were disappointed it would be 30 minutes late at this point and would leave our feedback. Not only did he not send the link, but he also canceled our game and sent an email telling me to "go ahead and write a nasty review then".

I have worked in customer service and this was by far one of the most unprofessional people I've ever come across. When you have a business, it's understandable that things happen, but you have to own your mistakes and then do the right thing by your paying customers. At no time was I nasty about this. We have spent so much money with them over the last four years. I'm sad we will never do business with them again. I'm writing this review now so other people are aware of how Escape Room LA chooses to operate under a pandemic when people are just trying to find ways to connect.

I've done other "escape rooms" and this one is the most elaborate. It's clear that a lot of time (and money) went into making this one look and feel authentic. The room had a 1940s feel to it right down to every detail. Even the books on the bookshelf were from that time period.

I did both of the current Escape Rooms...our team didn't get out of The Detective, but we did escape The Cavern. Really well designed and very challenging. The first time I didn't know anybody else on my team (a friend had to cancel) and still had a great time. Second time had a couple of friends and we got some really great team members whom none of us knew, so don't be shy about signing up if you don't have a big group. It's a lot of fun to work with folks and see how differently people's minds work. Teamwork is everything!

So, I was underwhelmed by Escape Room LA's "The Detective". I found it chaotic and scattered. But I was intrigued by Escape Room LA's next room, "The Cavern". And boy am I glad I tried again. "The Cavern" is one of the best escape rooms I've ever done. Its production value is superior, its puzzles are clever, the aha moments are tremendous. And, unlike its predecessor, it doesn't rely so much on paper and pencil. It's a great, great escape room. I can't recommend it enough!!!

This is a tricky review. As my friends and I LOVED the theater themed escape room we played. And there are many others as well. But there are several caveats for this place:

First, the location: for those of you new to Los Angeles, this part of town was a horrible, homeless overrun, skidrow adjacent nightmare, but like most of downtown LA, is undergoing attempted gentrification, and is now this Frankenstein monster of ultra rich people living in multimillion dollar apartments above the poop filled streets. (I don’t say that sarcastically, as we literally had to step over several large dog? Human? Droppings as we traversed the pee stenched sidewalks from our pee stenched subway train which we took to the 7th street metro station.).

Are you still with me? Still feeling adventurous? Good, so was my group and we trudged on, carefully watching our step as we screamed and laughed at each turd we narrowly missed!!

Finally we arrived at the lobby of Escape Room LA, a nice, clean oasis in the wilderness. And breathed a sigh of relief as we checked in for our game. (Have each paid a hefty $40 for the hourlong game on a weekend, it should be good!)

Then we were approached by a strange young man. He was asking us riddle like questions and we thought he was perhaps an employee feeding us clues before the game, or a drunken fellow guest trying to be friendly. But we soon discovered he was a crazy vagrant trying to con us out of cash, who’d wandered in off the mean streets. And unfortunately there weren’t any burley security guards at Escape Room LA to throw him out. We finally threatened to call tge police and chased him off, as our adventure continued.

The escape rooms themselves are excellent!! We played a theater themed room. Super fun for our whole party!! And some of our group had played the detective one, and the illusionist one, which they also raved about.

Overall, we had a great time, pumped up on adrenaline, mostly from the fact that we’d survived the evening.

So there you go. Choose your group of friends wisely for this adventure, and don’t bring the weak of heart. (I say that even though there was a group of 15 pre-teen girls in the room
Next to us, having a party with a couple of parental chaperones. And they had an amazing time too!)
