Melrose Avenue's Groundlings have been practicing their high-octane brand...

Melrose Avenue's Groundlings have been practicing their high-octane brand of anything-goes improvisation for nearly three decades. Audiences know the group for their wacky sketch comedy and lightning audience participation rounds, but for aspiring comedians and writers it's the Groundlings School that's the real draw. With courses in beginning and advanced improv, sketch and monologue comedy, the school has trained several generations of young wits. Its alumni includes a laundry list of "SNL"-ers (Phil Hartman, Julia Sweeney, Will Ferrell, Laraine Newman), Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson and Emmy-winning "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow. The theatre was also the home of Paul Reubens' early, raunchier version of "Pee-Wee's Playhouse." With pristine standards and a pool of hundreds of talented newcomers to draw from, the troupe offers some of the quickest, cleverest improv in town, cozily presented in their own 100-seat theater.

As a fan of Improv and stand up comedy, The Groundlings had been one of those destinations that I've always wanted to visit growing up. Now that I've lived in LA for several years I can say I have seen many many shows at The Groundlings. They are always hilarious and well acted, written, and delivered. Nanoor is the box... More

We come to see the Groundljngs every time we're in town. The shows are always funny and never the same show twice. Small theater makes for an intimate setting. Some audience input for improv.

We don't come from a huge metro area, so it was nice to see some live comedy. We had a great time. There was some talent in that room, too. Beware, there is a small chance that it could become interactive a tiny bit!! We had fun after the show and at breakfast the next day talking about the skits... More

We were able to see Cooking with Gas and it was hilarious. I absolutely loved the theatre and the actors/comedians are outstanding. This is our favorite thing that we did while in LA and I cant recommend it highly enough!

For six years, we’ve made every visit to Hollywood include this experience It is reasonably priced, live theater highlighting improvisational acting, with a wide range of funny skits and many theme-based routines utilizing suggestions fro the audience. We’ve always found it a good experience and come away laughing and highly satisfied with the entertainment we’ve enjoyed. The is a small... More

We saw the Fri 8 pm show of "Come out to Play"; every single sketch and improv was hilarious. It's a great cast with imaginative writing.

We've been to the Groundlings a few time- saw "Groundlings Come out to Playaay" last night- another fun show. We laughed out loud! Not for people who are easily offended. Very talented actors- well worth the $20 admission-open seating in a small venue.

The Groundlings Theatre is a prominent piece of comedy history. I took my first class there in November 2014 when I was trying to see if improv was something I wanted to do. I drove 600 miles just so I could take this 3-hour class at the legendary Groundlings School. It was worth every minute of it! On top of... More

$20. Great fun. High professional improv and sketch comedy done well in a small theater. The show pushes some envelopes but never devolves into mere crudeness. It was funny, exciting and after all these years, still original.

I am a big fan of stand up comedians and improv. I love things like SNL and Who's Line Is It Anyway. I did look at going to the places such as The Comedy Store. However, I really wanted some group improv. I was torn between Second City, Upright Citizen Brigade and The Groundlings. The reviews for Cooking with Gas... More
