With only our group 6 on the tour on this day it felt very VIP. Doug did everything he could to make this memorable. He spoke with great knowledge about the town he clearly loves. Great pace and time to explain the many stories behind the various landmarks/locations we visited. Highly recommended and well worth the money. Enjoy !!!!

My friends and I took an excellent City Tour of Los Angeles and Hollywood a few weeks ago and while poking around TripAdvisor before writing my review on Hollywood Classic Tours, I came across a shockingly horrible review about the very same company and I felt duty bound to at least touch on this review before writing my own. I'm writing this to set the record straight at least as far as I am concerned. I know I wasn't with that man when he took Doug Galloway's (owner of Hollywood Classic Tours and only tour guide) tour, but I distinctly got the impression that the tour guide had a basic speech he or she does with all their tours. For instance, Doug Galloway (our guide) told us he was a journalist for nearly 20 years with Variety, and I know reporters stick to the facts. For example, Doug told his customers (us) that California had close to 12 million people when Doug was born and now it's over 40 million. I distinctly remember him saying that, and all I can reason is that the man in the other tour must not have been paying attention. None of the customers (including myself) heard Mr. Galloway utter anything remotely racist or "anti-immigration." Mr. Galloway did state that Latino immigrants began to rent store space from building owners on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles during the 1970's and that the demographics shifted sharply in '70's, '80's and 1990's before downtown L.A. began a major revitalization effort. Nothing racist or untrue. Simply a straightforward recounting of a specific time in the recent history of Los Angeles. Maybe the other reviewer was angry because he didn't get a refund. He went on about money, and the amount needed to pay is spelled out in the tour description. We did our research and selected Hollywood Classic Tours based on that, and we weren't disappointed. Sorry he was.

I can only assume that the previous reviews were penned by the man himself. The tour was horrendous from start to finish (we actually couldn't finish the tour and were glad to escape after a couple of hours). The tour started off downtown where we were subjected to Doug's racist diatribe along with his questionable facts regarding LA. An example of this was that the population of downtown LA had increased from 22 million to 40 million during his lifetime and had caused all the problems he was now experiencing in his beloved city. The population of downtown LA is actually circa 4 million!!! His views regarding immigrants was downright shocking and he clearly was either oblivious to the fact that I was not Caucasian or he just didn't care. If seeing sights from a van with tinted windows is your thing with commentary that lacks any interesting or factual information then this is the tour for you. Personally I would suggest you hire a car and do it yourself. It's what we ended up doing and luckily we managed to salvage our day and it was also considerably cheaper and much more relaxing I could give a more in depth review of just how bad it was but quite frankly I'd rather sooner forget the whole experience. Finally I would add that after paying a substantial amount for the tour ($178) we were offered no refund despite cutting short the tour (we did come up with a plausible excuse as to not being able to continue). I think this just about sums up the professionalism of this outfit. PS We managed to hire a Ford Mustang for the day for $50 and fuel was $20 and not listening to racist drivel was priceless.

Doug picked us up on time at a conveniently located downtown hotel with affordable parking. His Mercedes van was spacious and clean, with just two of us as passengers for the half-day tour. Doug clearly loves sharing his home town with his guests, and had many interesting stories from his time growing up in LA and from his time as a reporter for Variety, the renowned entertainment publication. Historical architecture of the city was also a focus. We had extra time on our own to explore at several locations, including lunch at the LA Farmers’ Market. If you want a more in-depth tour experience that goes far beyond driving by gated homes of the stars and the usual tourist spots, this is the tour for you!

We did this half-day tour in early December of 2019. This is a great tour to sightsee the major attractions in downtown LA, as well as to learn the history and culture from the tour guide, Doug, who grew up in LA. Great experience!
