We were in Los Angeles to see Joni Mitchell perform at the Hollywood Bowls so this was a perfect complement as Joni has lived in the Canyon on and off since the Sixties. Tonya is a delightful and thoughtful guide on this 2-3 hour gentle hike around an area of the Canyon in which she herself lives and where countless musicians and characters have lived and still live (as we found out). Tonya will also supply details of areas of the Canyon not covered by the hike but which are or were also home to famous hippie-era and music names. For music fans I also recommend a night at the legendary music venue The Troubadour in West Hollywood, where Joni performed her first LA gig in 1968.

We had a great time on the Laurel Canyon Hippie Tour with Tonya. She is very knowledgeable of the area and the history. She paced the tour well, gave lots of great details & stories, shared pictures from back in the day, and provided addresses of interesting points not in the immediate area to explore on our own. She even provided drinks & snacks. Would highly recommend if you’re a music buff and/or if you’re looking for a unique experience in the LA area.

Laurel Canyon Hippie Hike was a standout experience during my time in LA. Wandering through the historic neighbourhood, rich with music history and surrounded by nature, felt like stepping back into a legendary era. Our guide, Tonya, was a treasure trove of information, sharing fascinating stories about the musicians who once called it home, from Joni Mitchell to Jim Morrison. She also shared personal stories about what it's like for kids growing up in the neighbourhood and attending school there, making us feel like locals for an hour or two. The peaceful, scenic trails offered breathtaking views of the canyon and distant city skyline, making it the perfect mix of nature and nostalgia. If you're looking for a unique, laid-back hike with a side of rock 'n' roll history, this is it.

I highly recommend this tour if you want to do a deep dive into the lifestyle of the west coast 70’s muso’s and get some exercise at the same time. It is an easy hike with some hills but nothing daunting. We walked early morning 7am and were lucky to experience an absolutely beautiful LA day. Clear views and gentle walking. Joseph was a well informed tour guide with great stories to impart, but also an interest in garnering new info from the hikers. Well worth the early start. 5 stars.

You don't need to be a hippie to do the tour, just a music/music history enthusiast who enjoys joining the dots and seeing the homes and the hills from which amazing creativity flowed in the 60s and beyond. For me, the 3 others in our group, and our guide, Tonya, the walking tour was the perfect post-script to being at the 19th and 20th October '24 Joni Mitchell Jams at Hollywood Bowl. We were all buzzing . Tonya struck absolutely the right note in providing us with a wealth of local information but also winkling out stories and experiences from her group (one of whom was a music journalist with his own amazing tales to share). We never noticed the slight inclines in the trails as we drifted along in the Laurel Canyon sunshine, noting not only the homes and their histories, but also the pretty foliage, blooming flowers and bird life. The drinks and snacks were welcome and the salad afterwards at the famous Laurel Canyon Store, where we ran into two of the Fabulous Morgan family, capped off a totally memorable and enjoyable few hours. What a great community to this day.

Must do!! Tonya led an amazing tour, sharing her deep knowledge of the area while keeping us entertained with her great sense of humor. Our group ranged in age from 42 to 68, and the pace was perfect for everyone. It was a fun and informative experience that I'd highly recommend to anyone!

Enjoyed a great walking tour with Tonya. Highly recommend this tour if you are in the area and have interest in the music and musicians that created the sound from Laurel Canyon. Tonya is a great guide with interesting information about the homes and past residents of the area.

I’d wanted to visit the beautiful Laurel Canyon for so long, and I’m so glad we discovered Joseph and Tonya’s walking tour. Informative and speedy communications from the moment we expressed an interest. Great instructions for meeting point, with a photo!
Joseph and Tonya who are the guides, live in The Canyon and are such lovely people. Providing snacks, refreshments and sun lotion at no extra charge.
Joseph led this tour and had some amazing historical stories about past residents and their homes, along with lots of cool information on the nature we were surrounded by.
We were a small group of 4 couples who had all been to The Joni Jam that weekend. The pace was relaxed and enabled us to take in every breathtaking view. Joseph was interested in all our questions and encouraged us to ask away as it could help him research further facts and stories he may not have looked into before. I loved this☺️
We were so happy to have come across The Hippie Hiking Tour and would highly recommend doing, if you love all there is to love about the nature, creativity and great stories of Laurel Canyon. Thanks Joseph and Tonya!!!

If you grew up in the 60’s and 70’s listening to the best music ever written, I highly recommend you take the Laurel Canyon walking tour with Tonya. This canyon oasis is just outside Hollywood. Tonya will (literally) walk you through the personal lives and past the residences of the most influential singer/songwriters of the day, who spent their most productive periods in the canyon in high collaboration with each other. We were fortunate to have Tonya all to ourselves - very knowledgeable, took her time, answered all our questions. This behind the scenes history was so interesting- a welcome respite from the LA grind. If you are a music fan, this tour is a must.

Angela was my guide, and she was just the nicest person! I learned so much about this neighborhood, and had a great conversation. I recommend for fans of the 70s era, fans of the music that came from this place, who want to experience a unique pocket of Los Angeles, love architecture, or just enjoy a nice hike in nature! Bring sunscreen, comfy shoes, and a hat! For those who count their steps, this one is almost 7k aka 3 miles.

Are you still running the tour or did the fire destroy everything, including your business?

Is this a one-on-one private tour or will we have the change to join a group tour? Would rather not be solo.
Written September 6, 2024
Worth making a request! I took the tour by myself but I think that was just chance. I was supposed to walk with two people I didn’t know.
