About
Perched atop Mount Lee, this global symbol of Hollywood glamour measures 450 feet in length with mammoth white letters, each standing 45 feet high, spelling out the name of the city. There is no access to The Hollywood Sign as it sits on restricted property however; there are several scenic view points which provide great photo opportunities . 1) Hollywood and Highland. Farther away but easy , especially if you are already in Hollywood. 2) The Griffith Observatory. Take the Metro Red Line at Hollywood and Highland to the Griffith Observatory stop. From here board the DASH Observatory shuttle operating 7 days a week ( beginning 3/21/17) to the front lawn of The Griffith Observatory for views of The Hollywood Sign. 3) The Sign is best viewed from the interior of Griffith Park. Trail signs will guide you to these sites. Please stay on the designated trails and enjoy the great views of The Hollywood Sign !

You can't miss seeing it
Aug 2021
The sign is obviously an icon that you cannot miss, even if you stay at a distance. Hiking to it is a popular pursuit, available in a number of variations. The "easiest" route is starting at Hollywood Lake Park, which is also the closest relatively convenient parking (the streets underneath the sign have no public parking whatsoever). From there, you soon end up on the sloping Mount Lee Drive, which is not too demanding (but, of course, it gets progressively hotter as the day advances). There is a fair dollop of disappointment at the end, in that you do not actually get near the letters - the peak point is above the sign with a limited skewed view of the letters. But great views over the city! The closest lookout from below is at the Tyrolean Tank Viewpoint, at the start of Mount Lee Drive. If hiking up to the peak is not your thing, make that your finish point - or even just do the Hollywood Lake Viewpoint. Ot the Observatory viewpoint, which is a different approach much farther away.

We had an excellent experience.

I took a class of wine tasting at 7 Birches Winery in NH. It was so informative. The tour guide, Ross, answered everybody’s questions without hesitation. I could see that he enjoyed answering our questions. The wines were delicious. My wife and I enjoyed very much. If you happen to be in Lincoln, NH this is a winery worth going to.

Solid 7.25 mile round trip hike from Griffith Park Observatory
Jul 2021
Yes, there are shorter paths and longer paths, as you can stick to the long and winding dirt road or venture off on to the trails, we did a little of both, and also finished in a different place from where we started. But this is the joy of this hike, it is a wide open canvas to be enjoyed by all. Some folks have written about the $10/hr parking fee, here is a tip, parking is free at the observatory before noon, and who wants to hike in the hot California sun once noon hits! Get there early, bring plenty of water and fuel (pretzels, energy gels, stem and leaf mandarins), make sure to use the restrooms at the end of the parking lot before and after you hike, and have a good time. Once you reach the top you’ll appreciate the enormity of the sign; I told friends it was font 1,000,000! Yes it is fenced off, as we always say, “Safety first!”

Great Hike but beware
Jul 2021
This is a must do in LA. It is a 3 mile hike each way from the Observatory. Beware parking is $10/hr. There is no shade, water or washrooms on the hike and it is not signed well at all. Great pictures and glad we did it but beware! It's much harder than it seems!

Nothing special, but still a symbol
Aug 2020
I visited California in August 2015 (it was my last trip as a underaged girl!) and how couldn’t I visit Hollywood, the Mecca of the cinema? Actually, the sign itself is nothing special, due to its distance is even difficult to photograph, but at least once in a lifetime you have to see it.

Iconic Bucket List

A must see when you’re in Hollywood. We viewed it from Griffith Observatory, but there are many areas to choose from for pictures. Another item off the mist-see list.

Hollywood Sign from the backside
Jun 2021
If one visits Hollywood, you must view the Hollowood Sign siting on the top of Mt. Lee. Yes, the sign can be observed from different location throughout Hollywood. However, you really need to get up close and personal with the sign. The giant white sign is 450 feet in length and each of the 9 letters is 45 feet high, spelling out the name of the city. NOTE: You cannot access the sign from the front. If you attempt to do so, be prepared for a heavy find, possible jail time, etc. Sign can only be viewed from the back side. By hiking up Burbank Peak Trail (formerly Wonder View Trail) to Cahuenga Peak, the Hollywood sign may be reached via a 3.8-mile round trip hike that ascends 925 feet. The hike crosses a rugged single-track, visiting two peaks while providing a good workout on a less-traveled trail. Trail is rated moderate to advanced. Recommend utilizing the free street parking along Lake Hollywood Drive and walk a quarter mile (paved path) to the gate at the end of Wonder View Drive, where the trail starts. Be advised the trail covers some steep terrain. Be prepared for lots of snakes on the trail. During our hike, note more than 5 rattlesnakes. Wisdom Tree is the ideal spot for a rest break. Sit in the shade and enjoy the fantastic views of Hollywood and the surrounding area. It is a short distance from Wisdom Tree to the top of Mt. Lee and the backside of the Hollywood sign. The sign is enclosed by a chain link fence. Interesting, even if you only see the backside of the letters. This trail will give you a workout. Excellent, and fun trail. Strongly recommend all hikers who utilize this route, dress appropriately, (i.e., sunscreen, hat, good hiking boots or shoes, and lots of water. You are going to need it as the weather heats up. We started hiking early, but the summer heat certainly made it guess appearance. Got hot incredibly early in the day. Suggest taking your time, (2-4 hours), enjoy the views and have fun hiking.

Ditto...
May 2021
It's a big sign...in Hollywood. It reads "Hollywood." People flock from all over in order to read this sign or be photographed standing near it or with it in the distance. We didn't do that. Rather, it was one of many sights on our open bus tour of celebrity homes and sights. Cool...

Iconic Hollywood sign
Jul 2020
Obviously a must to see and photograph on a visit to Los Angeles, there are trails you can get to and get a close up of the sign, but there are elevated places on Hollywood boulevard where you can see and photograph it totally unobstructed
