Neighborhood: Downtown
Downtown Los Angeles is a busy metropolis of towering buildings, bustling streets, and industrial warehouses. There is a distinct multiplicity of cultures here with a growing influx of business professionals and hipsters. Many call the evolution of Downtown over recent years gentrification. New lofts, bars, hotels and restaurants are popping up regularly. Downtown is home to some of the very best restaurants in the city leading the LA foodie scene, plus it is the location of cultural and sports venues including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Staples Center, and the Coliseum at the University of Southern California.

My friend and I went to The Broad Museum first and hit this museum 2nd., since we were spending the day in downtown LA., it worked out perfectly. This museum was fairly small, must get tickets online and they only release a month at a time in advance. The artist are not as well known but it is still a good walk through of contemporary art. We had 2:00 tickets. It took as about 45 minutes to go through. Well worth it and it's FREE!

Less of a hassle than The Broad across the street. A more relaxed atmosphere. So, part of the museum was closed (they were installing a new show), which left just an interesting environmental show. The artist imagines the disaster that awaits us in the U.S. if sea levels rise significantly. It was a sobering exhibit that was hard to shrug off. As others note, admission is free, and I went at 4:00 pm on a Sunday, avoiding the crowds. (Assuming that this museum ever does get crowded?!?) If you have the time and energy, do MOCA and The Broad in the same day. They're right across the street from one another. I checked my backpack easily at this museum, as well. An hour or so well spent.

MOCA is a small, free museum nearby Disney Hall, the Broad, and the Colburn School. As it's name suggests, its collection is all contemporary art. Its current exhibition, "Long Story Short," features a wide variety of interesting pieces that make you think. I only wish there was a little more context for some of the works without a description. Tickets can be reserved online or obtained from the box office at street level.

You have to make a reservation before entering the museum. It's a small museum with a circle route so even taking your time you can walk through it all in about an hour to 1.5 hours. The gift shop is outside in another building and it's kinda small but you can still find something probably as a souvenir. It's free but make sure you plan other things around this area cause it's not worth a special trip/parking structure expense.

Popped in after visiting The Broad and we were impressed with the calibre of artwork that is displayed here. It is free to enter, but you have to book times tickets, luckily we were able to do this on the day, but it may be different in visiting on the weekend. It is not a large gallery and can be done in under 2 hours but definitely worth a visit.

Not very impressed with the collection in the museum at this location on S. Grand Ave.
Glad we did not pay for admission. Worth a walk through after you spend time at The Broad (across the street). More impressive collection of art at LACMA in Mid-Wilshire location. Check to see which buildings and/or exhibits are open at LACMA, as I believe some are closed for renovation.

What I mean by the title is when you compare MOCA with the other museums and architecture on the same street or nearby, it's relative. We visited Disney Hall, the Broad as well one after the other on the same day. If we had only visited MOCA, the rating would probably be higher.
It certainly lives up to its theme of contemporary with the artwork on display when we visited. There were some very interesting exhibits of art that certainly were captivating. One of them was "Seven Stations" with its colored interactive spaces. We also appreciated the open spaced rooms and that made it easier to stay "safe distances" from others. (see photos)
We also liked the Liz Larner artwork and Jennifer Parker's as well. They may still be there if more permanent pieces.

This was a wonderful afternoon. MOCA is now free admission. They have a great new layout of the museum. Some very interesting new exhibits. I just love seeing what is on display. There is a wonderful interactive art installation that has you walk through rooms of different colors. The museum staff is very knowledgeable. This was a great way to spend some time looking at world-class art in Downtown LA

The best part of our visit was seeing how many teen aged students came in groups to benefit from the museum’s exhibits and learning opportunities. We also noted how many young people worked for MOCA as guards. The exhibits’ variation added to the quality of our experience. Robert Frank’s much touted series of photographs of “The Americans.” Pattern and Decoration in American Art with fabulous quilts and more. The museum shop was one of the most creative that I have seen. Highly recommended.

adult son and I did not enjoy the art on display. too esoteric for us. they probably switch out exhibits and these two didn't resonate with us. for example, there were a bunch of different sized mirrors lined up near the bottom of a wall, there were 2 panels with nothing inside but a painted border, there was a large work made of mostly whitish squares. it's a very nice facility and the price is amazing (free) but we did not enjoy it.

Does it need to wait in line to get in or make reservation early?Thank you.

Usually easy to get in. I went on a Saturday and the line for the Broad Museum was around the block, but at MOCA there was no wait and no crowds so you could actually see the art.
