A Livermore winery that is both modest and splendid
Tired of driving 2 hours to the Napa Valley to pay $50 a head to taste bland cheese and stale crackers paired with wines they can't sell? Try this Livermore Valley winery. It's as much fun as the best in the Sonoma Valley (and the Paso Robles area). I'll take family-run and wooden structures over a $10,000,000 concrete castle any day. Retzlaff is a better value than 98% of the Napa Valley venues. The drive out I580 isn't quite as bucolic as Highway 121 through Carneros. (So take Hwy 84 if you want twisty and sylvan.) Perhaps I'm being a bit unfair to a certain very few Napa wineries. But the trend is undeniable. Live music on Sundays. What's not to like?

    Amazing and unforgettable experience
Wow what an incredible experience at Retzlaff Winery. We booked an event in this place on a weekend and all of our guests loved this place. The booking and planning of an event in this place was smooth. Emily was very patient, accommodated and suggested us a lot of great things and listened to all of our request. She made our event spectacular. Even all of our wine choices was really good and they taste delicious. I recommend this place to anyone and everyone. This place is also beautiful.

    Beautiful Dog Friendly Venue/Winery
Visited on 25 August (a Tuesday) with my uncle while in the San Fran area for the day. Went in the afternoon and it was very nice out with shaded outdoor seating areas and a large grassy area lined with ancient pepper trees and having a raised stage area centered along one side. 5 tastings for $20 and the tasting price goes towards a bottle purchase if you choose at the end. The wines we tried were very nice. The was a Sauvignon Blanc, a Rose, a Merlot (100%), a Cab (100%), and a blend (70% cab/30% Merlot). The blend was our favorite. Dog friendly and provides poop mitts for guests. Social distancing is a breeze. Staff is very pleasant. Being a Tuesday there were no other wineries open in Livermore and we were very happy with this first time visit. Another neat thing is you park between the rows of grapes and the Cab and Merlot grapes were right there on the vines to be picked in another couple of weeks.

I had heard nice things about this place so my colleagues booked a party in early June for my wife who will be retiring from teaching after 33 years. With the shelter in place orders we were not sure if the event would happen but we were holding out hope. Then earlier today the shelter in place order was extended through the end of May. Since many of the attendees will be over 60 and my children will have to fly in for the event I called and spoke with Salome and said since we were not cancelling but adhering to states shelter in place orders would it be possible to get a refund on the amount we deposited. It was only 250.00 however, it was collected from a group of teachers. She spent 20 minutes berating me in a very aggressive tone. She indicated she would not ever refund the money but indicated we can reschedule or take a wine credit. Rescheduling dates are not possible and wine credits do not help teachers who deposited money as we could not get everyone a bottle of wine. I realize it is a difficult time but the way I was treated was incredibly disrespectful and the vineyard came across as wanting only to make sure they got their money and in no way was sympathetic to the plight of a teacher, who after 33 years of service, was ending her career in an pandemic. I will NEVER go to this place and remain appalled at the way I was treated. I hope their wine is truly amazing because their customer service and respect for people was abhorrent and I hope that the person I spoke with is not representative of the other employees who work there.

We are futures members and this year, because of covid, Retzlaff is revamping their tastings for members. My husband and I sat at a table while Salome and Michelle brought ( both futures and current) wines to our table. Great explanations of each wine and a most enjoyable experience. So personal and informative.

Their wines are so enjoyable and the area is always so pretty. Perfect afternoon!

We just love RETZLAFF winery and Staff. We are always greeted like we are a long lost friend and are shown where we can sit and we are always promptly served their award winning wine. The wine is smooth and they have all kinds of options for food from charcuterie boxes to meat and cheese trays available in their tasting room. We love going on Sundays where they ALWAYS have live music! RETZLAFF is definitely a Livermore Winery Treasure!

The upside.....wine tasting on a Sunday afternoon; musician performing w/guitar and singing pretty good; very friendly and welcoming atmosphere! The downside.....unpaved road and parking in the actual vineyard.

Retzlaff is a great place to visit, especially when they have live music or comedy!

The few notes I'll make as suggestions for improvement would be:
1. They have a strict timeline and will remind you at least twice during the visit about the session time; it would be nice if there wasn't as much constant reminders about this.
2. There's no way to taste the wines before buying a bottle; it would be nice if they did offer flights of the wines for the guests.

Otherwise it's excellent, and it's child- and pet-friendly so great for a family outing.

Retzlaff is such a phenomenal vineyard in the Livermore Valley. With the COVID-19 pandemic, you can really tell they're trying to ensure everyone has an amazing time while keeping you as safe as possible. The grass framed by the pepper trees and grapes make for such an enjoyable experience and I love that there's an entrance on the bike trail, so I can easily ride my bike there. The staff is so lovely and friendly and the wine is excellent!

4 of us had a very pleasant afternoon at the Retzlaff Winery. Secured our picnic spot for $5 a head, and enjoyed a red and a rose, both reasonably priced, especially when compared to what you might pay in Napa or Sonoma. The nacho platters prepared on site that day looked pretty fabulous, but we'd brought our own food, something not every winery will let you do. Staff was very welcoming; we felt right at home, also enjoying The Breedloves, a guitar/ ukelele combo playing that day. Signs directed us to park the car between the vineyard rows, so that's what we did.

Retzlaff has done a wonderful job of combining great, organic wines with a lovely garden setting. The shady grass area is large and accommodating of tables well spaced out. You can schedule a wine tasting standing at a barrel first and then move over to a picnic table for byop during the week or buying the tasty catered nibbles on the weekend. I love bringing out of town visitors here!

We had a great time, we took our 6 month old puppy, the location is lovely, and the staff are super nice. Being dog friendly is a big plus. If there was anything less than 5 stars I would say is that there is a charge for reservation per person for the picnic table, which then does not go towards the purchase of the wine. It is a small thing but I was surprised.

Retzlaff Vineyards at Livermore is a perfect place for a family gettogether or outing or celebrations. One gets a wine tasting experience from their Cellars, enjoy a meal at their Picnic spot under an umbrella with scenic surroundings and walk around their vineyards. Adequate parking space is available in the marked vineyard area. We went there as a family with kids on a sunny afternoon after prior reservation. We relished their Port Wine, Isabelle's Blush and Sauv Blanc Wines. For starters we enjoyed their pack of fruits, bread, cheese, nuts, ham and sausage. For our meal, we enjoyed Quesadillas, Tamale and Nachos-Guac; the cuisine was fresh, well cooked and tasty. The kids enjoyed running around the Park area and seeing the Vineyard. We could also see some family celebrations in full swing. The staff are very helpful, friendly and great. We thoroughly enjoyed our outing at the Vineyards.
