I love this place. The view over the bluffs with Torrey Pines Golf course to the right and Blacks beach below add to the mix. It is free to go and great for all ages and especially kids to see first hand flying craft of various types. Plenty of parking in the dirt lot but you will need to be a bit careful when parking if your car is low so you would drive around some spots to park more level.
There are facilities here for food and drink at the Cliffhanger Cafe with deck seating at several places. Shop for shirts or gifts and for those that are brave enough to want to try a tandem Paraglider ride they start at $175 or more for lessons.
You will also see hang gliders and model glider aircraft that are about 6ft wingspan.
Since flight of gliders is weather dependent the best time is when the winds flow in from the ocean but not overly windy. You can go to their website to see a live webcam or call. 858) 452-9858 .. website is flytorrey.com and click on link at bottom " current conditions "

My husband flies model gliders, and has also flown in regular gliders and parasails, so we couldn’t miss visiting the Torrey Pines Gliderport! It’s a lot more crowded than he remembers it was in the past, but it was still really special to go there. We made our way down the path to where the guys were flying the model gliders from, and it was fun to talk to them about conditions there. I especially enjoyed watching the parasailers take off and float up and down the coast line. It was so beautiful and peaceful. It was very tempting to take a ride, but for now I am leaving that to the people braver than myself.

At this hidden location, you can watch the hang gliders launch off the cliff and fly toward the ocean. There is a small restaurant offering simple sandwiches and salads with outdoor seating and a complete view of the ocean. The unpaved parking lot can be a challenge, but the view is definitely worth it!

We were in the area (had brunch at The Cottage) and stopped to see the gliders. Parking area is not paved and is bumpy, with some rocks. Not good for people who have trouble walking. It's fascinating to watch the people prepare for and launch their gliders into the air. They then soar along the coast, when the wind currents permit. There is an area where you can sit at a table and watch.

We visited on a cool but sunny winter day - after finding a spot to park in the huge dirt lots (dominated by UC San Diego students parking there), we walk down to the edge of the cliff at the Gliderport - to watch the gliders go by. What a view both directions and what a sight. There's also a little place to get food there, and then watch and listen to the pilots talk among their community and fans. Quite an interesting visit!

We had no idea that we were driving up to a glider port when we arrived. So fun seeing the colorful gliders in the air doing tricks over the cliffs and beach. We had a blast just sitting and watching all of the action. A perfect free thing to do when in the area. They do offer rides which we would for sure like to do one day. Looks like you can take snacks and drinks and sit at the tables to watch sunset too.

We have lived here 8 years and just went to the Gliderport for the first time, while friends were visiting. This is such and amazing experience. Pick a sunny day and sit on the porch of the cafe and watch the paragliders take off and land. The views are beautiful, the lunch is not bad, and parking is easy, too (which you almost never get to say in La Jolla). I'm told they can't fly if the wind is too strong, so may be worth calling ahead before you go.

We had visited this location on a previous trip so returned here with friends the following year. There is a small building that offers gift items and snacks and drinks. There is patio seating and picnic tables. The day we were there, there were several glider pilots attempting to take off but the winds did not allow. It's just a relaxing and fun place to just hang out!

Customer service at this place is disgusting. I am a paragliding pilot, who made a mistake of purchasing a $320 pair of Crispi Airborne GTX boots from their online store for my overseas trip. Part of one boot's sole came off after 30 minutes of using it on day 1 of flying. Since I was on the top and needed to fly down safely, my instructor put some glue to the sole. I had no other boots with me, so this was the only solution. I have not used these boots again, and when I came back from the trip, I contacted Torrey Pines Gliderport and explained the situation. Their representative told me they cannot help because the boots were "tampered" and therefore not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. They said I need to contact Crispi directly. I did, and Crispi said they have a 1 year warranty which would certainly cover my situation. I tried to explain this to Torrey Pines Gliderport's again, since I bought the boots from them; however, their front desk kept telling me that I "am not listening" and claiming that I'm being "too firm" and demanding. I asked for a copy of the warranty they were referring to but they just hang up on me. Just wow. Stay away from this place.

While i didn't partake in hang gliding, the views from up here are gorgeous and its fun to watch the gliders sail off the edge of the cliff. There is a cafe here but we didn't eat at it. It seemed like it would be an enjoyable afternoon to watch the gliders while eating at the cafe.

I have some questions. My first one is, which is better tandem paragliding or tandem hang gliding. My last question is, which one is scarier, and which one is more fun?
Written June 8, 2020
I don't do either of them.....which was is scarier for me to watch is the more appropriate question for me. I say both!! ha ha

As I recall it was $170 ish. Additional if you want professional pics and video. I did all and it came in around 250??? I’d skip the video but the pics were worth it.

Did anyone experience motions sickness doing the paragliding?
Written July 1, 2018
Some might, I sure didn't! It was very quiet and peaceful! That said, if you have any fear of heights I'd opt out. Pacific Ocean is 350 feet from where you take off and you're sail much, much higher than that!
