A stunning design that as well now for the cutting edge scientists as it did when it was built. They offer 1-hour architectural tours most weekdays and it is so well done.

After Jonas Salk invented the polio vaccine, he wanted to create a world-class research institute where researchers from various fields could work and collaborate. This is the result. The architecture and history of the facility is amazing and very inspirational. One would need a guided...More

We were unable to see the key feature of this project by Louis Kahn, the central courtyard leading to a dramatic open sky above the sea. We still walked all the way around the perimeter, but wish the gates to the courtyard had been open!

It is entirely closed and locked off on the weekend. Don't waste your time. The security guard stood right there with not a soul around and turned us away.

If you're into architecture, this building has a most amazing sunset views. The architect built an edge less pool between two buildings, so that at sunset the reflection of the Suns golden Rays on the water create the most amazing atmosphere. Bring a picnic for...More

Skip it unless you make prior arrangements. It is an R&D facility and not a touristic attraction. It is out of the normal visitors' path and not worth the deviation in my opinion.

I would not view this as a tourist attraction in La Jolla. The buildings are stark and designed to be functional. HOWEVER, if one continues on the road heading toward the ocean the San Diego Glider port will be encountered. Great place to watch hang...More

The guides on this tour are great! They know a lot and are willing to take questions. We went on the tour with my two year old son since we had no where to bring him. However, unless your toddler is content with standing still...More

I've attended a couple of academic conferences here, and have always been pleased with the depth with which topics are covered. Since it is a biological institute, the conferences deal mostly with health issues. One of the conferences I recently attended dealt with the new(est)...More

The scaffolding is the least of your concerns. The overbearing and rude security staff, on the other hand, might make it worth visiting any of San Diego's other attractions.
