We stayed 5 nights overlooking this beach, just steps away, and loved it. It’s where the kids (8,9,10) wanted to be for a majority of our trip. They loved climbing on the rocks and “jumping” the waves. We did not let them go in the water too far. The waves were huge and close to shore. The sunset and people / surfer watching was an above and beyond cool experience. The area within walking distance was really nice as well.

I rented an Air BNB that was one block from this beach. Went every day and enjoyed watching the waves and surfers. Beach is long and narrow with a strip of sand, but enough to sun bathe. Also watched an incredible sunset from here.

This is probably the worst beach for surfing in San Diego. If you are recognized as going there all the time, the "locals" think it is OK to harass you and try and run you off. It's not worth the trouble to try and surf here. Let them have their crappy little beach, there are better breaks to be had elsewhere where the "locals" attitude is much more scarce.

We were looking for a good sandy beach to play at with children and this was not it. We visited here in February and there was actually very little sand area and most was getting covered up with water. Even looked at the lifeguard info boards and it wasn't high tide time so maybe it was the time of year? Just big rocks everywhere and even getting down to the rocks on the made staircases was difficult as some of them are in poor condition. Many people were walking their dogs up on the sidewalk above the beach and this is really all this place seemed good for. I will say the view was beautiful. Waves crashing with the turquoise blue colors was magnificent but just not what I was expecting.

The beach is relatively empty and serene, because it is a surfing beach. The reviews on here misled me and I just want to warn people. The tide can get very strong and the waves break hard, right into the sand and rocks, as opposed to having a cushion of water to ride upon. I dislocated my shoulder from impact after getting sucked forward, over and thrown down into the sand by a wave. The beach is beautiful, and probably good for sunbathing or more advanced surfing. Don't go in the water for leisure or to body surf, you will be pushed directly into the sand. Quit when you feel the waves pull hard. Paramedics informed me it is probably one of the more dangerous beaches in San Diego and that they have picked up many people from this beach. Not for kids. Not for people who are trying to find a good swim spot.

First, this is a surfing beach. The surfers here can be "D***S", very territorial in the water. On the beach, it is fine.
The waves here crash hard, it is the rocks and the contour under the water, it is not a great swimming beach. There are areas to lay out and enjoy the sun, but becareful of the water.
NEVER TURN YOUR BACK TO THE WATER!
I have seen people hit from behind by waves and dragged out,
WATCH YOU KIDS!
That being said, it is a classic surf beach and it is a great spot to watch the sunset or just hang out. Go up the beach to the Cove to swim if that is what you want.

The sunset here was magnificent and morning waves were equally impressive. The water is gorgeous and clear and the beach was lovely. It's a very popular beach, with limited parking at the end of a residential street, so it's a little awkward to get to and crowded. Even with that caveat, however, highly recommend a visit.

Not too many rocks, not as crowded and plenty of street parking. Great spot if you want to get in the water.

Great beach convenient to our rental property. Some large rocks but that only adds to the visual appeal of this less frequented beach in La Jolla. The surfing is apparently very good as well if that is what you are into.

Loved this spot in La Jolla. The rocks make for interesting topography and private places to sunbathe comfortably. Fewer children, so not so hectic as many of the state parks can be. Easy walk up the hill to amenities like a Mexican restaurant, a coffee shop and a great resale boutique.

Is there enough sand to enjoying some R&R in the sun?

There is sand st some portions of this beach and people do come and enjoy their time there. And it is a beautiful rugged rocky beach with wonderful formations to explore. The surf is rough for swimming, but is good for surfing, if you are a local the surfers know. La Jolla Shores is where most people go for Beach sitting, walking and swimming. More crowded though.

Is this a decent beach for a takeout dinner picnic at sunset?

Yes!!! Bring a towel to sit on. Parking can be difficult especially in the summer. Note: anything glass is outlawed from all the beaches (including wine bottles/glasses). Also, Windansea is a fairly ‘primitive’ beach (no restrooms). Just good to know in advance.

Hi Chris/others who commented,
I'm curious if you recall what time of day you were there for the wedding? I am getting married there this coming May and have checked when low tide should be, but I'd like to confirm with those who have been there at that time of year! We're having the ceremony at 4pm. Just curious if you know the best time of day to be there.
thanks!

How is swimming here in mid-June? (I am an experienced swimmer and also know this is not Hawaii and the water will be cool).

It'll be fantastic. We were there over New Year's, & while we didn't have an interest in braving really cold water, there were plenty of surfers and swimmers wearing wetsuits in the surf. June is perfect for most.

Are there any hotels located close by or on the beach?

previous responders are accurate regarding hotels on the beach. We were blessed to be able to stay in an expensive boutique property right across the small beach road (nothing in this area is allowed to be right on the beachfront) so it looks right at the ocean. Phenomenal place. I reviewed it. Pantai Inn. like another reviewer mentioned, it might also be worth looking into private rentals along that stretch.
