This shop and tour was complete chaos from the start! The shop bathrooms were out of order and so was 1 of 2 showers. They apparently do not cap the number of people on their tours as the shop was so packed with people you couldn’t move, much less get your gear. I was told by different people to then walk down to different areas on the beach where we waited a long time for people missing from our group (people who were back at the shop but lost in the chaos.). I had called weeks in advance & and talked to them about the tours; I specifically booked the kayak cave tour with the snorkel to see leopard sharks. We kayaked out to the caves where we only got to see inside one of them. I asked about the snorkel to see leopard sharks and was told “yes, theres a lot of them over in that direction, we can go there.” Half way there (with all of us being strong swimmers) the guide says “it’s just too far, let’s go back, I saw a shark.” The guide then bragged to everyone we passed about the shark he/she saw even though no one else in the group got to see one or go over to where there were supposedly a lot of them. Why?? I booked this particular tour to see caves and sharks; saw one cave and that was it; I was told I could go to the snorkeling area where the sharks were on my own after the tour. Having done kayak and snorkel tours across the globe this one was the most chaotic and unorganized. We did enjoy the kayak and the snorkeling; the guides were nice and knowledgeable; just wish we had known not to expect what they told us to on the phone when I booked it. The guides were great but appear to be working for a shop only interested in $$$

We did the kayak snorkel tour.

Pros: The young adults running the show were polite and did a good job checking us in and handing out equipment. The two guides were nice. The scenery of the coast was nice.

Cons: If you do not appreciate very cold water, you will not enjoy snorkeling. The flimsy wet suits are not enough for 64 degree water. There was very little wildlife to be seen although the water was quite clear that day. If you get sea sick you will not enjoy this trip. Out of approximately 12 in the group, 5 were miserable by the time it was over and some even left early on their own. This is in the open ocean so there is the swell to deal with. Our weather was nice and the seas not that rough but it doesn’t take much sitting on a kayak to feel the motion of the ocean. I would hesitate to bring small children on this trip especially if tipping over in the kayak would ruin their day. Also, if you snorkel you need to be able to climb back into the kayak. I wanted to enjoy this trip but the hype in the description just did not match the actual experience. We did not enter a cave, no leopard sharks, only a handful of other fish. And, there were so many kayaks on the water it was more like a trip to the zoo than a nature preserve experience. But again, I would like to point out that the staff do a good job and are quite pleasant.

My husband and I had a great time during our 2 hour kayak cave tour. We are regular kayakers but wanted to go out with a guide to get some info on the area and definitely didn’t regret it! Our guide Connor was super informative and patient, and kept a great pace. We had another group with us that had never kayaked but it didn’t slow us down. Even though the swells were too high to actually go into the caves, it was still an awesome time. We got a unique perspective on the coastline and history, and even got to see sea lions and a whale spout.
A couple words of advice: 1. You will get wet. These are not enclosed kayaks. 2. If you end up dumping your kayak during the surf in or out, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about! 3. Bring some cash for a tip as the guides totally deserve one at the end. 4. We didn’t rent wetsuits and didn’t feel like we needed them since you stay pretty warm paddling and with your helmet/life vest on. If you get cold easily or are from a warmer climate and it’s chilly, it may be worth it for you. 5. Bring a waterproof phone case so you can take pictures without risking your technology!

I am new to kayaking and was doing fine in the lakes or fiesta island.

My brother recently took the kayak tour in La Jolla and said I should try it because the team was very helpful and he even learned a few things. He told me how the team at Bike and Kayak Tours - La Jolla did a wonderful job keeping an eye on everyone and always helping out. So I went outside my comfort zone and tried this tour and my worries quickly went away after meeting Matt and his partner who gave us a little training session and made sure we got over the waves safely. Had the best time ever and so proud of myself as is my family. Thank you to the Bike and Kayak tours - La Jolla

Terrible experience on the Leopard Shark Encounter. First of all, we thought we were signing up for a kayak tour. At no point in the registration process does it say that this was not a kayak tour, but a snorkeling tour. When we shared our confusion with the people working at the shop, they were not accommodating. We spend over $60 a person to be handed snorkeling equipment, even though most of us had our own. The “tour” was non-existent - a teenager walked us to the beach and basically said “you’re on your own”. At no point did they explain how to use the gear or tell us anything about leopard sharks.

The rental shop was a mess - I had to ask 4 different people before I received a pair of fins. They were also running out of some sizes.
This was a massive waste of money, I do not recommend this tour or company.

Elliot & Johnathon were great tour guides! We had so much fun!! They kept us organized & on track, they gave us some history & knowledge about the area & kept us laughing & having fun!

Our kayak did not tip over, we felt very safe & saw La Jolla from a different view, as well as lots of sea lions up close. We didn’t have a reservation & were able to get a tour within a half an hour. Do it-it’s fun!

My girlfriend booked this tour for us during our visit to San Diego and it was awesome! Our guides were Anthony and Thomas who were both very friendly and knowledgable about the area, they were also very helpful and even jumped in the water to help guide people through the caves. We got there way early to find a parking spot and we relaxed on the beach and rode Bird Scooters before the tour, I'd recommend arriving early for parking (as they recommend). Great tour and great staff!

I have mixed feelings about this tour… the people were great, however I feel the whole tour is misleading and borderline false advertising. We (8 people) booked the “kayak and 7 caves” tour. As mentioned by many other reviews, the waves were too rough to enter (or even go near) the caves. So we paddled to the buoy, stopped for safety instructions, then paddled to another gather area to hear more info about the shoreline and that area of ocean, then paddled to one more buoy to have the caves pointed out to us….then returned and waited our turn to paddle in to shore. I asked how often the water is “too rough” to go to the caves and our guide said “prob 50% of the time in winter months”. So, if the tour I book isn’t going to be the tour I get FIFTY percent of the time, that seems to be a bit of a scam. On the positive side… the guides were both very fun, knowledgeable, and enjoyable. They seemed very concerned for our safety, no one tipped over, they were GREAT. They said summer months are much calmer waters so I just wouldn’t do it in the winter…. Or I would wait until day-of to schedule if the cave(s) are what you want to see… and ask if the caves are being done. Also, although they do have wetsuits and lockers, they are not included in the price. Our guides (and the men) on our tour didn’t used wetsuits, but I would have completely frozen without mine! The water was chilly, but it was the cool air that went through to my bones. I short… without the caves, this was a very bland, basic, beginner-kayak tour…. If you have any kayaking experience, you would be disappointed.

The whole staff were wonderful! Our guide Tyler was very knowledgeable and made my six and nine year old feel very safe out on the open ocean. Very glad we booked this tour last minute and had this wonderful experience. Would have given 5 stars if we could have seen more than just one cave.

George and Randy were fantastic guides. George had great humor and both he and Randy shared many interesting facts about the caves and the shores of La Jolla. Made sure every one of us had a great experience. Will highly recommend to others we know and let L’Auberge know it was a fantastic recommendation. Thank you
