I love this small village in the valley with a hotel and Onsen. The whole village is with a Sulfur smell from the hot spring. Also is a change to spot some wide life such as bird or deer.

Nice place to walk during winter, children can see the sulfur mountain, the real one. No entrance fee but quite crowded with tourist. Overall, good visit for Noboribetsu.

The map for the trials are very self explanatory, even if you dont speak or read japanese. Decent view of the greater lake if you were to hike up towards the back of the mountian. The foot hotspring was very nice and suitable for family with kids.

Welcomed by the devil gods, we parked our car and went on to the trail. Beware of the sulphuric smell, once you get used to it, the walk is really pleasant. Trivia questions along the way keep you informed about the formation and the history of the area, the craters and volcanoes. Half way into the trek, there's an downstream area for a natural foot spa. Just get a floor mat (provided), and dip your sore feet in the flowing warm river. Good as a family outing too.

A great place to visit. Was here with a tour group years back and was rushed. Go at about 11am and avoid tour bus crowds. Explore all the trails.

This walking trail takes you right into the centre of the hell valley. The smell of sulfur is quite mild in my opinion in comparison to places in New Zealand and Iceland. The path is wide enough for two way people traffic in each direction and generally in Japan people walk to the left. Towards the end of the trail there is a centre platform that surrounds a water pond that has still water that suddenly starts coming into a boiling bubbling pool as the temperature gets hotter.
You do not need to hire a car to get to this place as it is all accessible by public transport.

Never walked or hike in a volcanic area? If you do not mind the sulphuric smell which you will get used to. Good for a after lunch or dinner hike. For after dinner hike, it may be abit too dark.

Walking through the gateway you might smell some disgusting smell coming out from the surrounding bring some mask to cover your nose if you have one. Good to explore a dead volcano close and have some picture.

There many places like this in Japan but still nice to walk about and enjoy the scenery. There are a few onsen resort around and some nice little restaurant dotted over the area.

Dear travellers,
I saw a lot of fee listing in their website. I'm wondering if there is any entrance charges for the trekkings to Jigokudani, River Oyunuma Natural footbath and Oyunuma pond view. Thanks!

Dear Carmen
For your information no fees is require to walk in the park. neither in the Jigokudani river. Most of the attraction in the surrounding does not require entrance unless you are going to Bear Farm. I hope with this information may help you to have a enjoyable hoiliday.
