A must visit place if you are going to Karuizawa it is an interesting street but a lot of stores closed when I was there in December 2022. There is a miffy, snoopy and studio ghibli store along this street. Be sure to try the curry bun while you’re here!

Lovely and quiet street with many boutique shops and cafes to steal your afternoon away. There are few good cafes, one of which is Makino coffee. Most of the shops are closed on wednesdays as I just realised today while visiting the area.

There isn't a single convenience store!
Apr 2023 • Couples
Karuizawa prospered as a post town on the Nakasendo road during the Edo period, and in the Meiji period it was introduced to the world as a summer resort, attracting many foreign visitors and developing into a resort town with a hint of Western culture. The main street, also known as "Old Karuizawa Ginza," stretches for about 500 meters from the old Karuizawa rotary toward the old Usui Pass. There are 200 restaurants, cafes, and shops lined up here, each of which is a long-established establishment with quite unique exteriors. But on this main street lined with such unique shops, there is not a single convenience store. A convenience store doesn't really fit in with a townscape that evokes a long history as a summer resort.

A nice old street with character and loads of local products (e.g. jam)
Dec 2016 • Friends
If you are in Karuizawa and have some time, why not drop by the Old Karuizawa main street to have a nice stroll and purchase some local products. We had a good time just roaming around, buying some snacks, jams and local products. You can easily spend an hour or 2 here. No entrance fee and is suitable for families with kids/senior people.

Also, remember to drop by Church Street building to buy some of the delicious jam. Highly recommended. For more info, please check out my review on Church Street.

We stopped here on the way back from Shiraito Falls. Catch the bus heading to Karuizawa station. It's about 5 mins from Karuizawa station and 25 mins from Shiraito Falls on the Karuizawa Kusatsu Line (bus).

Cosy fine shopping
Jun 2019 • Family
A quaint cosy pedestrian street with boutiques with both typical Japanese products and specialty imports. Also many coffee shops and gift shops. One of very few places in Japan where they charge money to access public toilets.

A pleasant stroll among shops and cafes.
Jun 2018 • Couples
Apparently we arrived in off season as we had most of the street to ourselves. We strolled in a pedestrian street between all sorts of shops selling Japanese curios, artisanal products, and food outlets and had a moderately good time.

Ride a Bike in local street
Dec 2017 • Couples
A typical Japan street - quiet, but you can discover some surprise. Rent a bike from JR station and ride along the street, walk-in the stores that sell jams and Japanese cake

For in-town strolling
Mar 2016 • Couples
I've stayed in Karuizawa several times on R&R trips from Tokyo. This resort town is famous as the place where the then Crown Prince Akihito met the current Empress Michiko at a tennis court. The old main street houses many souvenir shops and is worth strolling about here if you are looking for "omiyage" to take home.

I guess you have to visit on a trip to Karuizawa, but most of the shops and restaurants are rather mundane - too many place selling jam and honey
