It is a nice bike ride from Kyu-Karuizawa. I think the inside is not so special, lots of small rooms with weird doors and baths! Sort of mishmash of Western / Japanese styles.

We took a bus from Karuizawa Station to the MIkasa Hotel which only took about 10 minutes. It is interesting to look at such an old hotel and image what was it like in the old time with the travellers staying in it. I bet only the rich or upper class could afford to stay in it and there must be quite a number of staff to serve a few number of guests. However, it would only take you about 15 minutes to finish the visit, and then you would have to wait for a bus (there is only about two buses each hour until 5 or 6pm, so make sure you check the schedule before you go) or call a taxi. Unfortunately, Karuizawa is not that big and the taxi fare is affordable.

Not for everyone. Old hotel converted into a museum. Good for history lovers. Not kid-friendly. Off the beaten path.

We walked by to see the historic hotel, apparently very elegant in its day. We didn't bother going in, it's just another historic site.
