If you walk east along the main street of Old Karuizawa, the shopping district will eventually come to an end. Around this point, you will come to Shaw Memorial Chapel on your left, and the two-story wooden building at the back of the chapel is Shaw House Memorial Hall.
Reverend Alexander Croft Shaw first visited Karuizawa in 1885, and the following year, he rented a house there with his family to spend the summer there. In 1888, he built Karuizawa's first villa.
This villa has now been restored to the rear of Shaw Memorial Chapel and is open to the public as Shaw House Memorial Hall. Tables and other furniture are arranged just as they were when the family lived there.

The house has been restored and there are some items of period furniture in the house together with interesting photos of the period.the lanes around the site are good to walk and there is an hotel close by where John Lennon and Yoko used to visit.

The hall is behind the Shaw Memorial Church (pathway to the right of the church). The day I went, it wasn't open so I could only see the outside. It was obviously an historic building in a lovely forest setting.

Yes you've guessed it we visit churches. This is a typical church for the area, small and wooden. When we got there, there was a service going on so we couldn't have a good look round but it looked very nice from the door.

Cool green environment and quiet place to walk around. When we visited, the hall is not open thus we could only walk around the surrounding.

If you're interested in missionary history this might fascinate you. Otherwise it's not special. The church is quaint but not special in any particular way.
