Modern New Museum Short of a Curator
Dec 2019
The Art Museum in Dazu is located outside the Dazu Caves. The museum looks brand new and have a few levels. The exhibits are also placed in newly dim lighting and the whole area is modern. But there was one problem: there are many artefacts who few descriptors beyond what the item is and sometimes which era it comes from. The information is too little for anymore unfamiliar with Buddhism to understand. So the journey inside the museum is one where you will enjoy walking but learn little.

Very informative and well laid out museum and included in the entrance price
Sep 2015
It's tempting to not go in here as you can walk straight past to get to the carvings but it gives a great history of the site, other sites around China and how they have managed the restoration of the site. Nicely laid out and very well air conditioned.

The entrance has a 3d simulation of some of carvings across the 5 grotto sites in the local mountains..very well done.

Fascinating

We had a long drive to Dazu, but it was well worth it. The park seems untouched by war or the Cultural Revolution and it's beautiful in its own right.

There are so many carvings to be seen, all extremely detailed and some retaining very colourful hues. The Heaven and Hell one was my favourite, so long and so detailed.

There's quite a bit if walking and lots of steps, do you need to be fit.

A modern museum which still focuses on the collections
Jun 2015 • Business
This has been recently prepared and is modern well presented and organised. The information is bilingual with lots if English cautions. The objects are fascinating and it is great to have time to stand and look. There is interesting interpretation about cave art along the silk route and a lot of very detailed information about the restoration work. The spotlight graphics on the way in relate to the scanning techniques used to record the cave. Personally I prefer objects to gimmicks so would have happily missed the 360o cinema and wonder how long the thick carpets will las. Toilet clean during my visit and museum shop for mud price nic nacs.
Definitely worth a visit after seeing the rock art in the caves.

Two collections and both are worth a visit

They have been doing a lot of work at the Baoding site according to our guide and there are a lot of unnecessary buildings going up. You have to walk through them to get to the site but it's worth it in the end! The sculptures go back over 1000 years and there are some quirky things to look out for in between the numbered caves. The ones at the North Hill site were created first by a guy who wanted to atone for his sins - the Baoding ones came later. Beautiful Buddhist caves.....

Beautiful mountains and statues

Going to the Dazu Stone Carvings we had our trip organized by the hotel.. From the hotel (Sofitel) it took approximately 3 hours to reach the Dazu Stone carvings.. We paid 280CNY for the whole trip which included entrance fees to the site.. A lunch was also included, please note that if you have special dietary requirements it is better to bring your own food.. Generally people do not speak english so it will be tough going around.. We were in a tour group and we were the only expats in it the rest were just chinese "tourists" :P At the stone carvings we were not given any walkie talkies because the language was only in chinese, so we were just there walking around and trying to figure out things on our own :) The statues and the place itself is really impressive, it has a very calm and relaxed atmosphere.. It is a place that should not be missed if ever you have some free time and you are around Chongqing.. We went there on a very stormy day, the winds and rainfall was just spectacular!

Stunning Example of China's Buddhist Heritage
Feb 2012 • Friends
This magnificent example of Buddhist religiosity located not far from Chongqing is just overwhelming. One must have an excellent guide to take you through the site and explain the religious significance of these stupendous carvings if one is to truly enjoy this attraction to the fullest extent. I was lucky to have had a true expert guiding me. The carvings are just so spectaculat that it is hard to conceive that they were fashined by the hands of men over many many years.

One of the lesser known amazing sights of China
Apr 2012 • Couples
We visited Dazu at the end of a two week trip and thought we had seen enough of China but this was amazing! To think they were constructed so long ago and with such detail was worth the trip from Chongqing especially as Chongqing itself does not have much to offer!

This was also one of the less crowded places of interest and the drive there once leaving the motorway was very scenic and all in all made for a very unexpected excellent day!!

Fantastic

Absolutely amazing site of so many, 50,000, rock carvings, some absolutely huge, some over 1200 years old. One of the most memorable sites on our visit to China, specfically requested to be included in ou trip. We were lucky to have a guide who had studied them for 6 months as part of his training as a tour guide. It took about 2 hours to complete the visit. It was a 2 1/2 hour drive from Chonqing but it was worth every minute of it. You get to see an awful lot of rural China en route.
