We took the coach from 陳家坪 bus station to Dazu bus terminal, then city bus 205 to Baodingshan rock carving scenic area. We bought the combination ticket to both Baodingshan & Beishan sites. The carvings at Baoding are more massive & colorful. I was surprised that we could get so close to the carvings. Of course, crowds were everywhere. There was not too much walking involved & shuttles were available. Grounds are well kept.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site deserves its status. The carvings, dating from the 7th century, are exquisite. They show humanity and its vices and the synthesis of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. In that, they demonstrate the concept of harmony that is so fundamental to the Chinese civilization and its people.

This place is great! I have seen the Buddha in Leshan and the Mogao grottoes in Dunhuang - Dazu is equally worth seeing. It is different from Mogao because the carvings are outdoors. The entire band of carvings is set in a circle and is surrounded by lush vegetation. The museum is new and really beautiful (usually I don't like museums when I had the chance to see the original, but here I make an exception). It Shows excellent pictures of the Dazu carvings, but also of carvings in India and Afghanistan, etc.

The detail and colours speak volumes for the dedication paid in these wonderful carvings. They cover a long period of time and the reclining Buddha was a favourite. I have been to this site 3 times now and it is no wonder it is an UNESCO heritage site.

Visited the carvings in early July this year on a week day. It took us about two hours to drive from Chongqing to the site.Though some parts were under restoration, yet we were able to see most of it. Upon arriving at the site, we took the cart ride to the entrance, as it was very hot. Once inside, it was shady & cool. There were few shops that sold drinks & ice cream/snacks. Towards the last part of the walk one comes across a temple, where locals jump on you to buy incense sticks and other religious looking stuff.....just say xie xie! Do not buy anything! otherwise you will be hounded by each one of them for tips. Once outside you can taste the local cuisine at the road side restaurants and also shop for souvenirs. Caution: the walk is long, the path is slippery at places and mosquito repellent is a must

After visiting the Brisbane sculptures the previous day I thought I would be all Buddha's out, how wrong I was, if you want to see any carvings this is the place you should visit, and you will need a guide to explain the faith if you are not familiar with it, it is very interesting and you will be unconsciously following some of the guidelines in Buddhism every day already. The sculptures are of varying sizes colours and condition, I found it very interesting and with the help of our guide even more so.

Although not Buddhists, all of us enjoyed ourselves tremendously viewing all the exquisite carvings. In particular, it was pointed out that the wand alone of one of the 3 giant figures was 1 ton and that the weight of the hand and folds of the sleeves were calculated precisely so that it can support the wand. The cycle of life including the 18-levels of hell were very well presented - no sense of the macabre; they simply provoked some sobering thoughts. Definitely worth a visit and I would advise anyone interested in stone carvings and making the effort to go to Baodingshan to also consider visiting Beishan. It's a pity that Beishan is so under-promoted.

Lesser known than those at Beishan but still a must see. There are over 10,000 carvings mainly donated by locals not like Beishan and therefore more "rustic" looking
