An artistic tale of old Pingyao - when a group of young men were called upon to march off to Russia. Very cleverly done with a spectacular mix of dance, effects and street scenes from the old city. The audience follows the actors/dancers as they move from scene to scene in the theatre built specially for this performance.

You probably get more out if it if you understand Chinese, but a basic understanding of the story is enough to have a fantastic experience.

If you are in Pingyao and don't know how to spend the evening, go there. The performance is nice and entertaining.

An unexpected high quality performance with a good mix of variety, from Dance, to Opera, Acrobats & Comedy. We really enjoyed this performance and I even got taken up onto the stage. An absolute must if you're in Pingyao Ancient City for a night or two.

We got tickets for 60 yuan and went to the evening show which started at 7pm. The show is in chinese so you can't understand the story, but we already expected that. We saw some dancers (which did not really dance synchrone) and singers. Most chinese visitors already left within the first 20 minutes, so I think it was pretty bad. We left after 45 minutes. It was nice to see some chinese entertainment and 60 yuan is not that expensive. So you can give it a try, but dont expect too much of it and bring a fan because there is no airconditioning.

Many performances in China contain mostly modern elements like laser shows, etc. and have faint traces of traditional culture. This performance was very different. I sat with many older local pingyao people who really enjoyed it. The tickets without food were only 60RBM but it was difficult to buy the tickets. I went to the theater in the afternoon and no one knew how to sell me a ticket since most tickets are booked through tour companies. I'm very glad I persisted to get tickets. If you go definitely arrive at least 15 minutes early since there were people standing. If you get a table for food get a table near the stage, otherwise there will be people who bought the 60rmb ticket trying to sit at your table.

The Chinese name of the theater is 大戏堂。(da xi tang). It's located at the back gate of the confucius temple and behind the 9 dragon screen. The performance I attended was at 7pm and I believe they have a performance daily. Highly recommended for kids and adults. There are some beverages you can buy at the theater which seemed reasonably priced.

First of all this is not the Youjian Performance outside the Pingyao City Wall so some of the reviews here are wrong. This performance is held within the Pingyao walls and it is held together with a dinner service. Normally performances that are provided together with a meal are usually mediocre. But not this. This is a real performance and you can see the passion on the face of the performers.
