It is probably the main highlight to visit in Pingyao. Quiet place if you want to escape the crowded Pingyao.

If you are even remotely interested in historic temples, do not skip this one. It was the most beautiful and interesting temple we visited in Pingyao.

When we went in we saw a nice temple but the minute we entered the main temple we were under the spell of some priests. They seperated us and did a little ceremony and then wanted us to write down an amount of money. 'For what?', we thought too late. They insisted we put the amount written down in their moneyboxes. 'For our good luck', they said.... We think it is for their good luck.
After we noticed that they did the same trick to us both we didn't pay both (or else we paid $70, now 'only' $35). For priests they were not nice after our refusal.
We left and didn't have the patience to see the rest of the beautiful temple. It might be a nice temple to visit if you don't get swindled.
After this visit we became very cautious with other priests in other temples trying to 'give' us some incense to burn. In this Taoist temple they spoiled the luck of others.

It was recently reconstructed and a beautiful site to view as part of the Pingyao old city. Photos aren't allowed inside.

From outside the architecture looks like the same, however, inside as other reviewer mentioned, it's really peaceful, with big courtyard, and its really peaceful there. As other site, not many information, only some brief introduction on the board just after you get in.

This site is one of the historical site (out of 19) around the city. Fee is one pay for all (150 RMB for peak season and 90 for low season - Dec to Feb)

Definitely don't miss this if you're visiting Pingyao. Its courtyards are absolutely beautiful and there's a lovely approach lined by fountains in the shape of Chinese astrological signs. Gorgeous.

Shanxi has an especially fine collection of weathered old Chinese temples, with colorful murals, flagstone courtyards and picturesquely twisted cypress trees. This one also fits that description, adding some fine wooden statues, and puffs of incense smoke- for a bit of atmosphere. Some of the oldest relics date back half a millenium, making this a worthwhile stop for amateur historians and art-lovers. There are other old religious buildings in this street. It must have been the spiritual heart of old Pingyao.

The temple complex contains: Temple of the City God and the Caishen Zaojun temples. The colorful tiles that decorate the roofs in blue, green and yellow offer a welcome break from the drab gray colored houses of the rest of Pingyao.

The complex contains wonderful woodcarvings, paintings and sculptures. We arrived early in the morning and there weren't many people about except for a few students sketching. Included in the Pingyao Ancient City ticket, it's well worth at least an hour visit. Great views from the small observation towers with the drum and bell.

This city temple has been beautifully restored. The temple itself is quite impressive but compact. The grounds are well kept and beautiful.
