Done all 3 rooms and ESCAPEX is the best in the OC!
Dec 2019
I've done all three of EscapeX's rooms now and will join the masses in insisting that this place sets the bar in terms of both production and great puzzles. Curse of the Black Knight is still my favorite of all time and I've done over 20 rooms now, including Stash House and Red Giant in LA. It's the one I recommend to anyone new to the escape room scene.

The puzzles in the rooms are not frustrating or pointlessly misleading (which I've experienced elsewhere). They're intuitive, plentiful and enjoyable, giving you plenty of AHA! moments to keep you going. The production is top notch. If had to rank the games, Curse of the Black Sword would be at the top with The Attic a close second, followed by Mafia Heist.

The Curse of the Black Sword is a multi-room, multi-level castle that feels utterly medieval with its macabre props and set and walls. We were talking about this for days after doing it. I absolutely loved the immersion of this room and the physicality of it. It's been real tough to find such a satisfying game since. It's meant for 3-4 people. Too many is a crowd.

The Attic is a close runner up. Great production, plentiful gruesome clues. Super disturbing and creepy, but no real jump scares. We went with a group of four - each of us having a few games under our belt at the time. There is lots to do in The Attic! You will be busy! I was worried we would need more but we did fine. I prefer fewer participants. Less of a cluster F that way and everyone gets to contribute. This is also a multi-room room. Starts out really scary.

Mafia Heist was my third and for my taste it fell a bit short of the other two in terms of the overall adventure. It was done on a smaller scale and your job is to also find all the hidden jewels, money and gold which aren't pertinent to you escaping. A couple times we had to be nudged to do things we were already doing because we were having difficulty triggering the puzzle, so I don't count those as proper clues.

Staff has been helpful each time, but my favorite guy is the creator. He's delightfully nerdy and passionate and we got a chance to talk to him after one of the rooms.

Mission Escape Games and Cross Roads are also known for their quality rooms, but Mission's rooms, while fun, are not up to the production of EscapeX, and Crossroads, while top notch production, still falls short in terms of group adventure. Your entire group is more likely to thoroughly enjoy an EscapeX game, where as only some of you may love the Hex Room, for example.

Curse of the Black Knight
Oct 2019
I've done over 125 escape rooms in Seattle, LA, New Orleans, Houston, and the Bay Area. I actively travel and seek out the best escape rooms in the US, so this review is catered specifically to enthusiasts looking for unique, high quality rooms.

Curse of the Black Knight - high 3/5 | Rank 63/145 (A decent room with unique elements, but was a bit off from distinguishing itself compared to standard escape rooms.)

Curse of the Black Knight is primarily an adventure game. You go into the castle, do a bunch of adventurey things in a pretty cool interactive set and some amount of story (though not terribly compelling). This is a reasonable 30 minutes while it lasts, but felt a bit shallow - it would have been nice if there was just more content, whether that be more interesting puzzles or better story/scripted events - as is it felt like a decent, but slightly shallow experience overall.

Set - The interactive set is the main focus of the room, and it’s good. They packed a lot of varied set in a relatively small space, and it’s a pretty good implementation of a castle set with multiple floors/levels. For some reason though, it didn’t appeal to me as much as it should it have - maybe it’s just castle themed room fatigue since i’ve done a ton of them at this point, but a large part of the castle didn’t feel as immersive as it could have been, perhaps because there wasn’t as much story involvement with a good chunk of it.

Story - You have to lift the curse of the black knight, and the room takes you along the journey to do that. The puzzles do connect with the story and there is maybe one or two memorable story events.

Puzzles - The puzzles were mostly physical of the type “put X object in Y location” though there were some logic based puzzles as well. These were generally fun, but there was only one physical challenge that really stood out as unique (it was a simple but pretty cool set piece). None were particularly challenging, so don’t expect a ton here.

Player Recommendations - While the set is big, the game is very linear and there’s not a ton to do for larger groups. You should probably bring 2-4 people tops depending on if you’re an enthusiast or newbie.

Personal Stats: Escaped in a group of 3 enthusiasts.in 28 minutes.

We liked "Mafia Heist" better than "The Attic"
Apr 2019 • Business
We did both "Mafia Heist" and also "The Attic" with a group from work. We definitely liked Mafia Heist better. Both rooms were challenging and fun. The Attic rooms are very dark and two of the five flashlights they gave us to use were broken. It's much harder to escape when you can't see what you're doing. I'd suggest that six people is the ideal team size to have everyone involved in solving the clues to escape the room.

Did the Mafia Heist as a family of four and we got most of the money despite that but it was a tough challenge. Will definitely do again!

Tough but fun!
Aug 2018 • Friends
Just what you want in an escape room experience. We were a group of eight self-professed brainiacs and we managed to enjoy a full 50+ minutes of puzzle solving before pulling off a last-minutes escape from the Attic! This is a great team building event or fun family activity and the team at this Orange County location puts on a great show. Their tips were helpful, but not overt and made for an even better experience. Loved it and can’t wait to try another experience soon!

AMAZING ESCAPE GAME!
Jul 2018 • Family
Sitting at just under 100 games, I have played some good games and some bad games. Mafia Heist was a great game and It is easily in my top three escape game experiences.

This room didn't rely on just mechanical or just technologically driven puzzles, it pulled from both areas and seamlessly integrated a vast amount of clever puzzles into its story. It made you forget that you were playing an escape game, you were on a mission.

Amazing story. Exciting puzzles. Incredible immersion. After playing this game, you will realize how finely tuned it was for player satisfaction and more than likely it will ruin other escape game experiences because it is so well done.

Whether you are in Irvine or just driving through, make it a point to play this game.

Barely Escaped!
Dec 2017 • Family
One and only one I've been to so hard to compare. Our family had a good time and the event created good team work and comradery.
Overall I'd say it was a great family event.

Amazing Escape Rooms

I really enjoyed coming here with my friends. I have done both the Murder Manor and Casino Heist rooms, and have enjoyed them both. The theme is great in both of the rooms, and the workers are very helpful, giving hints if we needed them.

Murder Mystery

My friends and I had so much fun trying to get out of a locked room. We had no prior experience, but were able to solve 75% of the puzzles. We would all differently do it again. It was a blast!
