About
With the acquisition of The Irvine Museum Collection in 2016 and the addition of The Buck Collection in 2017, the University of California, Irvine has become home to a significant collection of California art ranging from 19th-century California Impressionism and plein air to Post-War Contemporary. To take full advantage of these assets and bridge the campus and regional community, the university founded the UCI Institute and Museum of California Art (IMCA) in 2017, with plans to construct a new museum on campus within the next few years.

A very pleasant way to spend the afternoon

The museum is on the ground floor of an office building in Irvine, but don't let that deter you, the exhibit was very nice and parking is validated. It is one of the few 'cultural' opportunities in this area and we enjoyed visiting.

Note, this should be a 3.5 - Good - rather than average. It does not rise to 4 stars, but it is free. Small, rotating collection of local CA themed paintings. This particular exhibit contains moderately good 3rd tier artists - it's more about local interest and views available at the time that may no longer be, than the artwork itself. That said, there were at least two and maybe three paintings in this exhibit that would show very well in a larger, professionally curated collection. Free parking (they validate, make sure you have this done) and there is a nice little cafe right on site for the office building that sits above the musuem. Tranquil, decent, reasonable.

What I learned from the speakers at tonight’s opening of their new exhibit. That during the earliest exploration of the American West, artists were included to record scenes of the discoveries. No cameras existed at the time. Even later with photography, artists were still included to record color, only black and white film or plates then. Without their contributions people could easily say that these places did not exist. With the donation of all the Irvine Museum’s works of art to UCI, the new name is now The Institute and Museum of California Art. UCI IMCA for all future references. As members we are invited to several of the openings each year. We run into old friends, make new ones, meet and chat with artists who attend, and at times meet owners of paintings on loan from Private Collections. People watching is great here, the art is spectacular, and the food is truly delicious bites of tuna, lamb, chicken sausage, with desserts of chocolate, strawberry cheesecake and several others.
Sparkling wine, white wine and sparking water were served as well. The paintings in this show are mostly landscapes and colorful seascapes, from the Irvine Museum and Buck Collections.

This museum has possibly the best collection of California art, particularly oudoor scenes. The current location in a tower in central Irvine is quite nice and the museum is generaly notvery busy despite being free. Before the coming of the Hilbert museum it little competition in the area.

This is a must see exhibition of early California Plein Air Art. A small but important gallery supported by the Irvine family. Take your time exploring, enjoy

The Irvine Museum is a tiny, free gallery featuring California artists. Its temporary exhibits are themed and all the ones I've seen have been outstanding. Certainly worth an hour of your time. Cute gift store, too. But hurry and take advantage of this easy location because plans are underway to relocate the museum to the UC Irvine campus.

This museum, with no entry fee, has a gorgeous collection of paintings portraying the California land and seascapes. I actually loved how it was smaller as I was able to spend a good couple of hours enjoying each painting rather than rushing around so I can cover as much as possible, the way I need to when in large museums with hundreds of artworks. :) They also had really soothing music playing in the background.
