About
Huntington Beach Pier was first finished in 1904 but was damaged in storm and rebuilt in 1914 and in 1931 500 feet was added to the pier but it separated from the original pier in the earthquake of 1933. The pier was repaired but was damaged again by hurricane in 1938 but was repaired the following year. During WW1 the pier was taken over by the military and a submarine lookout and large machine gun was installed. After the war the pier was returned to the public and held up until the storms of 1983 & 1988 finally damaged pier to the point it needed to close. The current pier was finished July 18th, 1992 with a dedication with 500,000 people. The pier was built using much of the same 1914 design. Huntington Beach draws almost 4 million people annually who come for the surfing, volleyball, air show, food and even Segway Tours from Surf City Segway can be booked.

- dambankerToronto, Canada1,805 contributionsGreat PierOne of the best places to visit. The beach of course is perfect, especially if you're into surfing. The pier always has surfers nearby and its a great vantage point to watch from. Its always a fun walk, with a couple touristy souvenir shops and vendors. At the end there's a restaurant as well, but truthfully I miss the old Rubys. If you're here is a must do.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 5, 2024

Huntington Beach is also great for sports and pictures and has lovely sunsets.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 5, 2024

You can watch beautiful SoCal sunsets from here. Also, you can eat a lobster roll at the shack on it. The city of Huntington Beach that I remember while going to university in Southern California was a real disaster and was not really safe. I just visited “HB” or also called: “Surf City” and it has completely changed to the positive. The downtown area has been modernized and yet has retained a certain charm with many restaurants and shops.
It also has maintained their famous statue of “Duke” the legendary Hawaiian Surfer. I was with family and it was really nice to simply stroll down the couple of central city streets and to leisurely walk on their still beautiful Huntington Beach Pier.
If you find yourself in the area I strongly suggest that you simply chill out and visit many of the shops; restaurants and pier in the city of Huntington Beach…you will not be disappointed…

Such a lovely pier. It is a great place to take a leisurely walk and watch people fishing and surfing. The views are beautiful and on a nice day this is such a fun spot. I found Ruby's at the end of the pier so I'll try that next time.

Exceptional viewpoint of breaking waves, surf, coastline. This Pier is enormous in structure, strength & photographic views!! From an artist view it's beautifully amazing! Under the grand structure is the perfect shady spot for painting a masterpiece, or photographing amazing angles. Clashing calm & powerful might of waves crashing amongst the towering pillars excite the senses.
The walk down the Pier is good excercise. The views above the water, sand & surf are great!!

I enjoy walking and watching people, and walking on the Huntington Beach Pier is a great place to do both. There is such a cross section of life. One highlight was watching junior lifeguards doing their training exercises. They were so enthusiastic.

Piers always attract the crowds to walk on them so they can see the water, waves, surfers, and even fish up close. The restaurant at the end of the pier - Ruby's is now closed. The restaurant probably went under due to all the pandemic restrictions. Any way the pier is a great spot to take a selfie and enjoy the sea breeze.

I have had the pleasure of taking walks in all types of conditions, high winds, chilly nights, rain, lovely blue skies and hot afternoons. It is a treat to come here, the views extend North to Pacific Palisades, and South to Newport Beach. The coastline bends in those directions and closes off the view. I had never considered jumping off the pier, it is a long way to drop into the cold Pacific. I have watched Lifeguard training exercises where they have made the leap. This is make sure they can do it without harm to themselves and for quick ocean rescues if necessary. Three restaurants are available on the pier. Ruby’s on the ocean end, with Duke’s and Sandy’s on the beach side. All are good, three very different menus. Many small stores sell items for your memory of the pier.

Definitely a Surf City vibe, but we saw many sketchy things going on and were glad that our visit was during the day. The beach, waves, view, and pier are one of the top that Southern California has to offer, but we were uncomfortable with all the obvious drug deals, drinking, and homeless people. So, after a short walk we went over to the Main Street area.

It’s a fishing pier with all of the wonderful smells and filth that come with being a fishing pier. The bathrooms were disgusting and in need of a cleaning. One of the commercial spaces was vacant. The trash generated by the restaurant at the end of the pier stunk up that entire space.
Thank goodness it is free, otherwise it would not be in business for very long.

Street or in parking garage across PCH. Turn onto the main street, go up one block and turn right, and about 150' down on right is a parking garage. Ruby's on the pier's validation doesn't work. But it's inexpensive as parking in OC and LA goes.

Can I bring a canopy to the beach? I have small children and want to protect as much from sun.
Written June 25, 2018
Yes you can bring Canopies & umbrellas. If you don't have your own you can buy one at Surf City Segway just up Main Street.

The dog beach is located at the intersection of Goldenwest St. and Pacific Coast Hwy. It's one mile north of the pier. All dogs are welcome so be mindful of non-social dogs.

Does anyone know about the fishing from the pier? Was thinking of doing the deep sea fishing tour with Davey's Locker at Newport Beach but wondering if fishing off the pier would be a better idea.Has anyone else fished with Daveys Locker?
Written July 27, 2015
From the pier you need tackle , pole, cooler, ice, bait.. Deep sea charters have all that and go out miles for best fishing
If you have the money, go deep sea.

About how much will a taxi cost from SNA to Hunting ton Beach and also from Huntington Beach to Newport Beach? Is that the best way to get there?
Written June 29, 2015
Sorry, I don't know. They are not cheap though. Answers may be available on the airport website under ground transportation! Good luck!

What are the closest hotels to the pier? We would like to be in short walking distance.
Written June 25, 2015
The closest is the Shorebreak at the Strand. It is almost directly across thee street. The Waterfront Hilton is the next closest, however, it is quite a walk to the pier. The Hyatt would be the furthest. The Hilton and Hyatt are South of the Pier. To the North of the pier are several motels as well that are within walking distance. Please remember when crossing Pacific Coast Highway, please only do so at designated crosswalk crossings.
