Beautiful day on the river, though l-o-n-g day for 3 adults and 6 kids 12 and under.

I made it 30+ minutes ahead of my wife and sister in law, and Joe graciously offered to paddle upstream to tow both boats back.

I came up to Healdsburg with my 9 year old and was a bit concerned that we would not find enough non wine-related activities to keep her occupied. Searching for outdoor activities, I came across Russian River Adventures on Google. What an awesome find! RRA really takes care of everything, leaving you free to really enjoy yourself.

I signed us up for a half-day trip, which starts any time between 12:45 and 1:45 in the afternoon. The check-in place is literally 4 blocks from the square in the center of Healdsburg--we could easily have walked there from the H2 hotel. When we got there, the laid-back (but extremely professional!) staff got us set up with a dry bag for cameras, phones, etc, and drove us and our canoe down to the launch site 5 minutes away.

We floated down the 3.5 miles of the river in about 90 minutes. The current was just strong enough to make rowing quite easy, but not fast enough to make me nervous at any point. It helped that the canoe was beyond stable--my daughter and I are not the most sea-worthy of adventurers, and we were definitely bouncing off of rocks and trees for the first 15 minutes or so of boating but never felt like the boat might tip us off!

Joey was there at the end waiting to take us (dripping and muddy and totally happy) back to our car. For the price, this was definitely a bargain.

A few tips:
1. Even if you didn't book ahead, give them a call. They were able to accommodate me "day of", even though I had failed in my pre-planning miserably!
2. DEFINITELY read the notes on their website! If you read it and pay attention, they answer literally every question you might have and their advice is spot-on--you will be completely prepared for the trip.
3. If you are canoeing with kids and doing the half-day tour, I would suggest eating before you go. Once we were on the gorgeous river, it was nearly impossible to get mine to get out of the water long enough to eat a sandwich!!
4. SUNSCREEN. Part of what makes the trip so amazing is that it is hot and sunny and the cool river feels amazing against the heat--but the sun kicks off the water and will burn you, even if you are the type who "never gets burned".
5. Bring watershoes/Tevas/light sneakers. Flip flops will come right off your feet and be gone in a moment, and you are going to want something in between your toes and the rocks on the bottom of the river!

Key points to note:
1) In sum: You rent a kayak, they drive your heavy items down to the kayaks, they explain how it works and what to watch out for, you kayak with your cooler/family/partner 8 miles, they pick you up, and drive you back (saw some reviews about the drivers, I thought the drivers were fine, people should remember that they are being driven back over dirt roads and are sitting in vehicles with truck suspension. It's just not the same as driving your bmw/prius on the highway --it's bumpy and the vehicles turn differently. I'm risk averse generally and felt safe/comfortable).
2) your kayak/raft doesn't like to go straight for too long. Accept this and move on. It's nobody's fault. Let one of you steer and if you're going fast, let the turns happen (we went with a large group of couples and watched them "get through it"..'nuff said). Just enjoy the river and stop at the gravel bars to eat sandwiches, play frisbee, and enjoy.
3) Suggestions to bring: bluetooth radio, cooler with foods/drinks, frisbee or something to play, your dog, a happy attitude.

I had high hopes for a river adventure with my family. I had done a similar activity a few years ago (different company) as a part of a wedding group, so I was somewhat familiar with the river and what to expect from such an excursion.

What I found first was an extremely RUDE and condescending shuttle driver (I’m sorry that your childhood resulted in you being a patronizing misogynist) who practically ruined my trip before I even got in the canoe. He flew through the hillside all while trying to follow him in unfamiliar territory in my own car.

Meanwhile, back at the check in, the rest of the group, including employees, left my family member by herself without direction on what to do or where to go to meet me.
We were both quite distressed before we even got to the launch.

I get that we are in partial wilderness, but everything was covered in spiders and somewhat dirty (yes even in the COVID times).

This may be an adequate “adventure” for those you thrive on DIY activities, or do not mind extreme disorganization and disrespectful attitudes.

I absolutely do not recommend this business if you value quality and being treated like a human being. Stick to the wineries or pool... or pretty much anything else.

Booked the full day trip for my dog and uncle. Made the drive up to beautiful Healdsburg from the Bay Area. There was food to purchase through RRA, but that was $18 a sandwich. We decided to pack our sandwiches and beer.
We made our way from the meeting area to the beach which was about a 10 minute walk. After a 15 minute orientation (I probably should have paid better attention), we were off!
The Russian River has a very slow flow in this 9 mile stretch, so there are no rapids by any means. Additionally, there were very shallow areas which required you dragging your boat a few feet.
Paddling was fun, but challenging at times. We were zig-zagging and doing donuts at times. Pay attention during the orientation.
My dog, Huan, had a great time. The water was shallow and there were areas where he did actually swim.
There were many sand bars to choose from to stop and take a breather or eat/drink.
The last 2 miles were challenging, as it seemed the river offered little help in the way of a current. So this trip will require some effort. It took us about 5 hours to complete.
A little tip, arrive early and have them drive your vehicle to the end (pick up point). I feel like it would have sucked to have been in a van with other wet tired people and their dogs.
It was a fun trip, and I would highly recommend.

We enjoyed snacks and beer, water in the canoe. This company allowed us to bring in food and drink with ice box in the canoe. Water flow slowly and gently. We never fell out of the canoe. Never. It was a very safe activity. We could take relaxing time in the canoe. Freedom time, only river and forest. But, I’m not a good canoe rider. We got stack in the thicket several times. When we got back to the start point, the shuttle passed beautiful grape vineyard. So, Russian river is famous for wine! We were excited even on the return shuttle. All these things healed us on this tour!

There are several Russian River outfitters. RRA did a fine job for us and didn't make us wait around too long at either end--one of the major problems with this sort of thing. Generally we recommend heading down river from Memorial Beach towards the coast--not doing the shorter trip from Alexander Valley to Memorial beach which is more developed

From our experience, you do need hat and sunscreen, as RRA advises. However, you don't need the watershoes or 'croakies' they try to sell at check-in. They do suggest going down the river at your own pace, which is great. But at take-out you can wait and wait and wait for the ride back. While you do, there are no benches, no shade, no refreshments. Important: Bring water. For some reason, RRA did not have it for us either at put-in or take-out. The river was all we expected. Unfortunately, RRA was not.

Having never explored the Northern California area, I found that this was a great way to see parts of the area that the locals love. The company was wonderful and provided us with a dry bag and a cooler to use during our time on the river. The instructions were simple and the route was beautiful. We are not an avid canoers, but we were able to keep up and manage the water just fine! It was a wonderful experience! I would definitely do it again!

Really nice people. Offered us coolers and dry bags. Told us where we could go to get lunch before we launched. Gave us tips and instructions. Great trip took about 5 hours. Great day on the water. We didn't get in the water because it was too cold but some people did.
