This trip down the river is a fantastic way to spend a summer day. do this almost every year and di it multiple times during the peak of Covid to escaope crowds of people. I have also introduced several friends and my grandkids to Kayaking here. It is a good first time experience for anyone in decent physical condition. Headwinds can be challenging at the end when you are tired.

What a great paddle I had with my niece this last week down the Russian River! Water was low in a few spots, all part of the fun of going down a river. We were out earlier in the day and witnessed some amazing wildlife (otters, egrets, brown trouts, long neck cranes, and vultures). Safety is the first concern of the staff and it shows in how the property and kayaking experience is managed. Be sure to check out their music venues on the weekend as well - a wonderful way to enjoy a sunset on the river along with great entertainment!

Most fabulous experience. In a time when we all need to get outside, Lollie went out of her way to make sure my family had a fantastic experience paddling down the river. We rented 3 of the 2 person kayaks and a stand up paddle board. We were given clear instructions and walked through the cleaning process that made us feel safe during these uncertain times as we brought my father in law whom has Stage 4 lung cancer. Thanks so much for a lovely day of friendly staff and wonderful family memories.

We had a bumpy start to the kayaking trip. First, although the company had a large area in front of their meeting point, you need to park off property and walk with all your stuff across a bridge to get started. Once there, you board a communal shuttle and head up quite a bit BUT that’s not all! The shuttle has to arrive at a private dirt road, manually open and close a gate and off-road to the launch spot. But that’s not all! You then need to walk about 500 ft on a dirt path to get to the launching point. Once on the water, it’s quite beautiful. Very green and very peaceful. We had water the entire float down but some spots are very shallow. Remember your water shoes as it’s either gravelly or mossy. We really enjoyed the first hour and then the wind picked up in the wrong direction and made kayaking back really long and hard! The kids got quite tired. It’s also very expensive so if you’re traveling with kids, maybe just get a few kayaks locally and putter around instead of this long excursion.

Thank you for the review! We try to give every guest a detailed description of what lies ahead of their Rio trip, and we appreciate your description. We do offer day use spots on our beach where you are able to rent kayaks & SUP's by the hour, which the kids might enjoy next time. We hope to see you at the river again soon!

A beautiful Northern California day when the kids are home for the summer, needs to include a trip down the Russian River in a kayak or a canoe. If you're thinking about doing so, the best place hands down is reserving your spot with River's Edge Kayak and Canoe in Healdsburg. The website is clear, extremely easy to navigate and there are some beautiful photos to further solidify your decision to make a reservation. It was also very nice to have the option of emailing my questions and booking online versus being limited to just calling to do either. During these challenging times, as small business owners find themselves unable to have staff at the location of their business, emailing and online services are more important than to connect with potential clients. I was fortunate because when I researched and reached out to a couple of the businesses that offer this excursion, things were starting to open slowly. Soft openings to ensure the safety of guests were happening in most of the places I contacted. I contacted a few. The only representative to respond, and promptly, was from River's Edge Kayak and Canoe Trips, and it was the owner herself. Her name is Lollie. She is terrific. Very helpful and very warm. She answered my questions thoroughly and was very generous with her time to offer further help if needed before my family's trip. On the day of the trip, everything went smoothly. My family and I arrived on time, got on the shuttle to get to our kayaks and had a beautiful and unforgettable day paddling down the Russian River. It was amazing, and didn't break the bank, I might add. A double Kayak was $140. Just a fun day! So many birds to hear and see, beautiful plant life and so many other breathtaking sights to take in, including the beautiful river itself. It was also lovely to stop along the river's edge to have lunch . What an incredible day, one I am sure my kids will treasure and remember for a very long time. I know I will.

Lolly and her team are top notch. We rented 2 2-person kayaks for our famlly of 4 which includes 2 teens (13 and 16). From the moment you check in, they were hospitable and welcoming. They loan out coolers, dry bags, sunglass straps, ziplocks and garbage mesh bags. There are porta potties at check in, after the shuttle ride to the launch point, and about 2/3 of the way down the river there's Del Rio Regional Park with more porta potties. Del Rio is also a great place to stop and have a picnic lunch (very gravelly though - not a sandy beach area). The river was very low when we went and we got stuck going over some rocks a couple times but not a problem to get out and push your way out. There's a portage point about 1/4 mile in where you have to get out of the boat and drag/carry it about 20 feet to avoid a sharp corner. The dragging/carrying of the boat was the hardest part of the trip but we managed. I'd google how to steer a kayak/canoe before heading out to avoid ending up in the brush!

I have done the Rio Trip ("Peaceful Morning Paddle) twice - once in July 2019 and again in June 2023. Both trips were great - the staff are great, the equipment is good, and the journey (5 miles down the Russian River) is beautiful and fun. The first time I did the trip we saw a lot of wildlife (otters, herons, egrets etc). The second time we saw some cute and other waterfowl - less exciting but very cute. Since you are headed downstream the whole time (with no rapids) the trip is fairly easy, though on my second trip there were strong headwinds, so it was more work than the first time. Bring lunch and drinks if you want to be leisurely and take breaks for picnicking on the beach or swimming. Wear lots of sunscreen (especially on your legs and feet) and a hat. Water shoes are great if handy but flip flops are fine (and that's what most people seem to wear). Thanks for a fun day, we'll be back!

My family of four (kids 7 and 10) had such a nice trip down the river! Everyone had fun! I was also very impressed by and appreciated their COVID-19 precautions. It felt very safe and well thought out (and, for folks wondering, the shuttle bus not only had room to sit families 6 feet from each other it also had windows open for plenty of ventilation). We enjoyed the trip so much we are thinking of going back in a few weeks to do it again.

We went on the 5 mile paddle-float with our 4 grandchildren (14, 12, 8, 6) and had a marvelous time. The information about the Russian River was spot-on. We did not see otters as hoped (we were behind some other groups and the kids were pretty noisy) but we did see an Egret catch a fish, an Osprey and several Kites, Vultures. Very worthwhile. The only thing that loses them a point is the directions. They say, "Don't try to follow Google Maps - they are not accurate." But they don't give (or we couldn't find) any better ones, so we did get lost. They quickly directed us after we called, but a simple instruction would have been helpful.
Great staff!

This has to be one of the very best ways to spend your summer days. The trip is always wonderful. We have kayaked with this company for 9 years now and will come next year and each after. There is no better way to unwind, disconnect, and reconnect with nature & tranquility. We so very much appreciate the experience provided and this summer alone have been on the river 3 times with them in the last month.
Try it yourself and you will be back again for another trip down river.
