We spent the afternoon wine tasting along Dry Creek Rd, and visited a variety of places large and small, fancy and simple. I found that our best experiences were at the smaller family run tasting rooms. Nalle was a very simple room with a winery family member, Andrew, as our host. It was my daughter's 21st birthday, and he made it a celebration. The wines were great, my favorite was the silky Pinot Noir. Thanks, Andrew!

A must visit when in the Dry Creek Valley. The Cabernet and Pinot are outstanding, and the Zin is a must taste.

I visited as part of a bespoke organised tour (max napa) this family run winery was the highlight, small family run, with Andrew, our host providing expert explanations of the wines and generous tastings. They are justifiably proud of their winery, with very old vines, and an environmentally conscious cellar with green roof. We spent and enjoyable time there, and I was glad to be able to reciprocate by giving Andrew a short tutorial on the growing and harvesting of Rhubarb (grown in their yard)

In the interest of full disclosure I have known one of the owners, Doug Nalle, for 50 years; we've seen each other all of twice since 1968. I have bought Nalle wines for several years and have always enjoyed them. Only occasionally do they show up at a retail store so if you see one and want to try it, grab it. The wines tend to be on the higher end pricewise (at least to me) but worth the money. He specializes in Zinfandel and does some nice blends. The chardonnays are also very good. My favorite is a Pinot Noir-Zin blend which they produced in 2004 but is no longer available. My wife and I attended his recent annual wine club party in November 2014 (also the winery's 30th anniversary) where they tasted four of their current releases as well as a number of their library wines. Someone brought a bottle of Nalle's 1990 Zinfandel and it was still excellent. My wife's comment when she tasted it was simply, "Wow." At the party they did a food pairing with each wine and the choices were excellent. They also produced a sparkling wine this year but it is not available for sale although it was served at the party. Again very good. The winery is a true family winery established by Doug and his wife Lee on land in Lee's family since the 1920s. Their older son, Andrew, is now the winemaker. Easy to miss as you drive along Dry Creek Rd., the tasting room is only open on week-ends or by appointment. The tasting hours are shorter than most of the neighboring tasting rooms in order to discourage those who just want to drink. Don't be surprised if one of the Nalles is serving or stops by to chat. Doug has been in the Sonoma Valley area for 40 years learning wine-making quite literally from the ground up and is very interesting to listen to. And with a great sense of humor. Keep your eye out for the small sign and stop by. Good wines in a very informal unpretentious setting.

If you're looking for a parking lot full of tour buses & wine country limos, a boisterous mosh pit 5-deep at the bar, or a tchotchke retail extravaganza, drive past this understated boutique winery on Dry Creek Rd. just south of Lytton Springs Rd. in Healdsburg. Co-owners Doug & Lee Nalle & their son Andrew craft restrained but complex, European-style chardonnays, pinots, zins & an occasional maverick blend, from vines that have been in Lee's family for 3 generations. Doug's tenure in the wine industry goes back 4 decades, when there were perhaps just a dozen wineries in the area, & includes collaborations with other giants of yore. A relaxed tasting experience with winemakers who are serious but have a sense of humor - highly recommended!
