We were driving along the northeast side of the reservoir on the fire road (you can turn directly onto it from SR-152), and we saw a huge herd of elk. Some of them had very large antlers. They were extremely impressive, maybe 50 of them. The photo shows the dam wall in the background.

We visited O'Neill Forebay, just north of the 152, not sure if this belongs here. The San Luis Creek RV campsite is a niced spaceous site. There is a toilet and that's about it. Though we visited end of July and it was quite hot we enjoyed our stay there. The view at the lake is nice and short hikes... More

While traveling from the coast towards Merced, we passed the San Luis Reservoir of highway 152. It was a scorching 104F outside, still a break was needed. The visitor center provides a small tour through the world of water reservoirs, hydro electric and aqueducts (biggest apparently is the California aqueduct with a length of 444mile) Anyway, it was just a... The water shortage is leading to be what looks like 100 foot drop in the water level.it is a pretty area and offers nice wildlife and hiking areas. It is a place for families to go for some outdoor fun.

We have been to San Luis Reservoir several times for picnics and hiking. This time we stopped by on our drive from LA back to home. It was a beautiful day. Its nice to see with our rains this year that water level is very good. There are breathtaking views of the reservoir. There is a visitor center.

We stopped by this place during our new year driving trip from Las Vegas to San Fransisco. The view is very nice and the surrounding is clean and well managed. We took a few nice shoots here and displayed it on our BB Display Picture and they were questions asking about the place. I am truly amazed and highly appreciate... More

We drove by on our way to San Jose from Los Angeles and saw this beautiful lake, decided to take a short break at the visitor center and time we took to this stop was well worth it. Not only we were able to see the beautiful scenary, we also learned about how much work it took for water to... More

Like the title suggests there was great bird watching, even just the drive delivered some great stuff like horas of egrets, a great blue heron and at least 5 different birds of prey. If you stop and look around the opportunities are endless!
