We made reservations and got there early. The wait was long however our time didn't start until we got the ATVs. It was fun a lot of traffic on the sand dunes so you have to pay attention. The rules are clearly explained. The equipment was good. I recommend this experience. Unfortunely this business and the beach won't be open much longer because they local government is shutting it down. Get there while you can.

Cheapest price on ATV & UTV's. Very friendly &
helpful staff. Made our trip worth it for all the help they provided. From renting to getting our 15 passenger van out from the sand...amazing friendly STAFF.

Instead of spending thousands of dollars on an atv, go to BJ's Rentals. They have an atv there waiting for you at a fair price. You don't have to insure it, haul it or store it. You just have to ride it!

While the Dunes are spectacular BJ's seems like an outdated organization stretched to the limits with the different parts of the organization (back office, beach operation) not communicating..
Why fill out forms online if you have to do it all over again and be in line for 1 h ? While the office staff is nice and helpful the process is very slow, awkwardly buerocratic and inefficient.
On vehicles: Why specifying the exact type of vehicle online (automatic) if those vehicles are not available when you are at the beach (you could wait another 1.5 h). There seems to be no connection between the website, the office and beach operation. Everything seems random and improvised.

If you experience a break down somewhere in the sand dunes do not expect to be rescuers any time soon. It took 2 h in our case, WhatsAp location markers were not read or even understood and the concern was more about their equipment then about people stuck 8 miles into sand dunes after sun set.

Also: the ragtag staff at the beach is not very friendly and you have to be careful to not be hit when they do their risky parking maneuvers (looks more like teenagers having fun).

So, all in all: not recommended

We came here two days ago with friends and the service was awful. We were only looking to ask questions regarding the price and different ATV models and the lady in the front scolded us to stand outside and wait until we were called. There were two signs for people who had reservations and people who didn’t. We didn’t have any and there was no one in any of the lines which is why we figured that it was okay to go up to the window and ask. There was a lady in the second window who was just on her phone not doing anything but still we waited. Then a group of like ten kids come in and walk right past us and go to the window for help and don’t get yelled at. They totally cut us and were also at the window for no reservations. Finally we got tired of waiting and asked the lady in the second window when and if we were gonna get called to which she said she could help us. We didn’t understand why she couldn’t help us from the start since she didn’t have any customers anyways. We asked our questions and decided not to book with them because they were asking for a 300$ deposit for a single rider ATV and a 500$ deposit for a two seater. We had never been ATV riding but that seemed ridiculous. We ended up booking with Steve’s and their deposit was only 150$ for the two seater and 50$ for the single rider. WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE. Once we were out driving you honestly could not tell the difference between any of the ATV’s so I don’t understand what’s so special about their ATV’s to have such a ridiculous deposit. I’m glad we didn’t book with them!

4th of July weekend, my family and I decided to take a last minute trip to Pismo and do some ATV riding. A first for my 2 boys and niece and nephew. I definitely expected it to be busy because of the holiday so I did not mind waiting an hour in line although we had made reservations online. The line itself and the system in place for getting paperwork completed seems confusing and unorganized. I could get past this because it was definitely busy for them and the lady at the office was very friendly and helpful. We had reservations for 2 hour ATV riding from 5-7. By the time we wrapped up paperwork and got instructions it was about 5:30 (we got in line at 4). The lady at the office told us not to worry because the 2 hour window for riding doesn’t start until we actually get our ATVs.
We head out to the beach, get a ride to the spot where we get our helmets. It’s now 6:15. The guy let us know we have to be back by 8:15. Great. I’m cool with that. Now we wait at another spot to get our ATVs (for 7 of us). There was only one poor guy getting all the ATVs and helping people get unstuck from the sand. By the time we ALL got our ATVs it’s now 6:55. They said that although we paid for 2 hours of riding, we can’t be out in the dunes past sundown which was 8:15. Fine. At this point I’m already tired and just want to get going. The actual experience of ATV riding was fun although short, but the SHOCKER was a rude beach staff member (chubby guy with beard, wearing a blue shirt with a hole in it) who got in my face and cursed at me in front of my kids, niece and nephew because we came back 15 minutes early and were riding around the path. He was unnecessarily rude and aggressive. I have never felt that attacked by anyone. If he felt that we were doing something against the rules then he could have communicated that to me in a decent way. He chose to come at me like he wanted to hit me. His approach was EXTREMELY threatening for any paying customer, let alone a WOMAN, let alone in front of children. The guy he was with just stood by and did not nothing like he was scared of him too. The whole experience was unsettling! He refused to give me his name because he said he works for “private company”. I hate to base my review on solely 1 disgruntled employee however, your staff is the face of your business. If you have 1 employee who is aggressive and disrespectful and nothing is done about it, then that’s bad business.

Great office staff. They explained us every thing well and got us started. The person starting us on ATVs was rude, condescending and I think just had a bad morning. We did not want to make a big deal out of it as we were out there to have fun. BJ's: please note your customers come there to have fun not to be scolded and demeaned.

We got stuck badly once and they had to rescue us - they came promptly in like 20 minutes, but later told us we broke the third gear and we would have to pay the fixing charges. Long story short - the office staff was gracious enough to not charge us.

All in all it is worth doing ATV riding once, but there are other companies who rent, please try those.

Wasn't sure if the kids were old enough (11 yrs old) to ride ATV's/quads but apparently you can at 6...huh?! My husband was bound and determined to do this so off we went to BJ's. They were very detailed at the office with rental info and directions to the dunes. They provided helmets and goggles if you wish (use them). You can park on the street or in the lot and their truck will deliver you to their spot on the beach. The guy that assigned us our ATV's was fairly helpful but I think a few more spins around the practice area might have been a good idea. We did a 2hour rental - that is PLENTY of time unless you are used to this. The kids thumbs got really sore pressing the accelerator-for little hands it stretches the thumb. This happened about 1:15 into the ride. Bring gloves if you have them. They sell cheap garage gloves for $2 but I wore fingerless workout gloves that worked well. If you have a small backpack to carry water do it, though it is hard to drink from a water bottle, a straw would be good. Beach bathrooms in the dunes, smelly and gross but available if you need them! We went on Monday and it wasn't crowded at all. I would be hesitant as a first timer or with small kids to go on a busy weekend. We wore pants (hubby wore shorts) to protect from the hot muffler/engine. Sneakers are a must though we saw some folks wearing flip flops (foolish). The clutch on the left side bugged the top of my foot after awhile so instead of wearing converse canvas tennis I would recommend regular sneakers. Overall a fun, but $$$ day!

We had heard how fun this outing was from a friend with kids the same age(13) as mine so we thought we would try it out. The staff at the check in office was very nice but when I started asking questions such as what type of injuries are most common and what type of problems may we encounter, the lady helping us was very vague and just kept saying "just do what you feel comfortable". What does that mean to someone who has never ridden an ATV before? She gave us some basic safety tips but said that once we got to the dunes, we would get more instructions.
We got down to the Dunes and the staff tried to put us semi-automatic ATVs. What? SO I told hiim I wanted fully automatic. He basically told us how to start it and stop it and sent us on or way. He didn't tell us how dangerous the Dunes and the ATVs can be. The Dunes can be like a mirage. Drop offs sneak up on you and the ATVs can slide on the sand easily and tip. They are heavy! It was fun but they need to tell you how dangerous they can be and how to avoid certain situations. Please do your research. My son ended up breaking his wrist and I sprained my thumb. It could have been much worse. They are a business wanting to make money and I get that but they need to inform their customers and give them a safety lesson before sending them off into the danger zone. I will never do this again.

Worth the read!!!!!!!!!!!

Tldr: My family and I came to this terrible rental spot thinking we would have a fun time but we were seriously mistaken. Please save yourself $ money, time, and ultimately a Huge headache. I highly support mom n pop businesses but this isn't it. I advise you to rent elsewhere.

We were greeted by a friendly( so it seemed) front desk worker who helped us fill out paperwork, choose our ATV etc ...everything was going smoothly-ish, until $ cost and rental prices were being explained. The employee was very back and forth and forgetful ( which she insisted multiple times that "it wasn't her day" and just an "off day") we just figured that she was really busy and tired. (BTW Gas price is $30? for 1 hour ride? and the speed limit is 15mph...doesn't make sense....)

But during the registration process I noticed a customer who just walked in about broken breaks and that she was sorry about the damage and agreed to pay for the damages with her security deposit.
I didn't really think much of it.

We finished our registration process and drove down to the beach. The "provided shuttle" aka "suv" was no where in sight.

When we pulled up to the designated area I was instructed to park by an employee on a dirt bike (who quickly pointed to the specific parking spot and drove off). On my way to the spot my car got stuck in the sand. I understand this is the beach and this is very common.

After we pushed the car out of the sand I walked over to the BJ ATV trailer (about 10-20 feet away) . And asked a nearby person smoking a cigarette/ maybe a joint? where to repark. ( I thought he was another customer/later finding out that he was an instructor). He pointed to the exact location where I got stuck and gave a smirk and a shrug like it was a joke.

*Mind you he saw the whole thing and instructed us to straighten the car wheel and physically push the car out.

After reparking my car my family and I walked over to the ATV rental trailer and was shocked to see another family who was very upset at the condition of the provided rental atvs.

The customer(man) was being accused of being a liar and was being yelled at by a 2nd employee with the assist of the smoking employee( I mean yelling very excessively/loudly almost like a tantrum) in front of the man's wife, 2 young children( I'm guessing 6yrs and younger) and a late teenage son for allegedly breaking and damaging his atv(s).

Wow.

While all of this is going on his wife glances over to us with disappointment and frustration and warns us to film and document the condition of the atv before and during the ride.

Then proceeded to tell us that the ATV will drive you out and breakdown X minutes/ X distance into the ride. She explained to us that this has happened to them before.

I figured it was maybe bad luck?(strange considering the establishments only job is to rent out atvs) but the blatant Disrespect and Condescending tone that these 2 employees were showing to this man in front of his family didn't sit right with me.

So we left right away and headed back to the front office for a refund.

Once we were back in the front office I politely asked for a refund. When the employee asked me why I told her the weather condition quickly changed and I felt it was not ideal and frankly not safe. I asked for the manager who was "out and about" and unavailable for another Hour/ or to come back on Wednesday(I was here on Sunday at 5pm fyi)

THIS is when an older lady with blonde hair marched over to basically tell me off.

I told her my reasonings and before I could finish my sentence she cuts me off and was quick to raise her voice and talk down to me, basically shouting at me to man up because people come and ride in the rain all the time.

Complete disregard for me and my families safety.

This would've been my 1st time on an ATV and would rather not Risk me and my family Safety riding a motorized vehicle.

I'm a grown man and her tone was Extremely Condescending, Belittling, Disrespectful, and Unprofessional.

-You must not be from 'round here type vibes if you know what I mean................

While all of this is going on another family next to us was going through they're registration process and seemed very uncomfortable and confused ( the same employee who helped us) was going over $costs and jumping numbers.

We walked out and one of them followed us outside asking what happened. We explained the story and they were really shocked and walked right in for a refund.
