After we got off Amtrak, we walked over and rented to two electric bikes from BJ's. After going thru the rental application they assigned us two brand new ebikes. It's a great place to head to Pismo Pier and check out all the action.

Lots of fun, but no cheap. Try it.

Looking for fun in GB? Have a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket? Then ATV rentals may be just the trick. We drove by BJs and thought we'd check it out, and my wife said it was on her bucket list so we took the plunge. Unfortunately, the water was far from being a tropical lagoon... Here's what you are in for:

When you rent at BJs, expect what appear to be pretty unmotivated and pretty unhappy people to help you fill out your paperwork. Note they charge a surcharge for credit cards and would prefer debit cards or cash. Kinda sketchy to me.

You'll have to sign a waiver that pretty much releases the company from any and all liability no matter what. I was a bit shocked at the wording, it seemed extreme to me but after doing it, I understand why. Just be advised: this is an inherently dangerous activity with lots of people driving very fast (there are no speed limits in the dunes), many of the people partaking in this activity indulge in partying activity of the smoking and drinking kind, and there is ZERO visibility over some of the dunes. People die doing this activity. If you are timid or concerned about fate calling in your number sooner than later, this is not for you.

Once you get over the shock of basically signing all of your legal rights away, you'll have to face the fact that this is not a cheap activity. That being said, BJs is from what I can tell the most affordable vendor on the beach, so that is a major + for the BJs team.

Next: BJs isn't anywhere near where the dunes are, but that's okay. You drive down to where the dunes are, but even then, you aren't where the dunes are unless you pay the State Park parking fee and drive down the shore. There a ton of campers and trucks toting "Toy Haulers" (yes, that is where they all go, apparently) and once you park, you can walk to the distribution point. OR you can park near the toll booth and walk on the sand where you will be picked up by an incredibly beat up Chevy Blazer driven by a friendly and helpful person who will drive you down to the place where you pick up the ATV. Actually, all the people at BJs who are "in the field" are pretty helpful.

Once you pick up your ATV, you WILL need a helmet and you will get some brief instruction. They told me that the hour doesn't begin until you drive off when taking my money, but when I actually arrived at the distribution point, they said the clock started as soon as I had my helmet. That kinda sucks and a big reason for their mediocre rating.

Then there is the equipment... we did this as a couple, so we rented a two seater, and we should have known that it would have been similar to the shuttle... it was beat up, rusty and incredibly loud, almost as if the exhaust had been modified. That being said, we were off and had a pretty good time cruising down the beach and entering the dunes area.

Thats when things got kinda weird. First off the dunes are massive, and like I said there is no speed limit. There are also no right of ways, no signs to direct traffic, its basically a 1/6 free for all with no rules, no order and some very crazy people driving at high speeds flying over dunes. We were having a good time in the outer dunes, and thought we'd go in to the interior, and found out a couple of things: some of these dunes are super steep, and you have many many opportunities to roll your ATV or kill yourself.

Or be killed, as we saw one Subary WRX (yes, a street car but set up for rally use with sand tires) come flying over a blind hill that we were just about to descend... and had we done so, we might not be writing this right now. Fact is you can't see over the tops of these dunes, so you don't know who is coming up the other side nor do you know if someone is about to come down on you.

If there were order to the madness I might have felt better about it, but there were also a ton of beer cans around in the sand and its pretty clear that the people who do this activity don't have particularly strong survival instincts.

This close encounter complete freaked my wife out, so we went back to an area where we could see who was coming or going and ensure we weren't going to drive off any cliffs and flip ourselves over.

Let me be straight here: if you are an adrenaline junky and you like living on the edge, this is a really great activity. If you are hoping to draw social security and still have all your limbs and faculties with you later in life, you might want to consider going pretty easy on the dunes and playing it safe like we did. I can understand the appeal of spiking your adrenaline, and I'm glad we did it, but given the money, I don't think we would do this again.

In all, BJs is a pretty accommodating company, and I think they do try hard to ensure you have a good time. But they cannot ensure your safety and this is an inherently risky activity, if you ask me. If you have someone with you who is a skilled rally driver, the risk of something bad happening is probably pretty low. But if you are like us and have never done something like this before, you might agree with us that although it was fun, there is no way in hell you'd catch me taking my kids out in the dunes... there are just too many crazies out there who seem to throw caution to the wind and behave like absolute lunatics. Hey, some people do extreme skiing and jump out of airplanes as well, and this ranks pretty high up there with those kinds of activities in terms of the risk if you ask me. But like I said, glad we did it but never again...

BJ's ATV's employees are all very Rude people, including Manager or owners. They try to steal money from people unfairly, thats not enough These people at BJ's ATV's are RACIST. Let me tell you why. When we got the trailer, we took a lot of picture of ATV while we were getting setup, because we were so excited. I am so glad we took pictures, Because when we return the ATV, people at the trailer accused us that we broken ATV headlight. They say we will charge couple hundred dollar for damage fee. I started argued with them and told them my 11 years old son never hit anything with the ATV, he was with us all time. They just keep yelling & saying you guys broke and pay for it. Then I showed pictures of the ATV before we rent it. The picture clearly shows headlight was broken before they rent it to us.
As soon as they see the pictures, they all shut up, I told them do not ever yell or accused customers, specially this is not the customer fault. This is trailer employee fault, they should've let customer know any damage on the ATV head of time. I was expecting apologies for them, because their fault didn't tell us, instead trailer people use F..word "F.. These people" get out here. in front of my 6 years and 11 years old son and my wife.

I am proud of being who I am with my color and what I wear. I even went to office and told them this is not right they way you guys steal money from people unfairly, Office manager or owner didn't apologies either. I would never ever rent this people again and never recommended to anyway to rent it either.

Worth the read!!!!!!!!!!!

Tldr: My family and I came to this terrible rental spot thinking we would have a fun time but we were seriously mistaken. Please save yourself $ money, time, and ultimately a Huge headache. I highly support mom n pop businesses but this isn't it. I advise you to rent elsewhere.

We were greeted by a friendly( so it seemed) front desk worker who helped us fill out paperwork, choose our ATV etc ...everything was going smoothly-ish, until $ cost and rental prices were being explained. The employee was very back and forth and forgetful ( which she insisted multiple times that "it wasn't her day" and just an "off day") we just figured that she was really busy and tired. (BTW Gas price is $30? for 1 hour ride? and the speed limit is 15mph...doesn't make sense....)

But during the registration process I noticed a customer who just walked in about broken breaks and that she was sorry about the damage and agreed to pay for the damages with her security deposit.
I didn't really think much of it.

We finished our registration process and drove down to the beach. The "provided shuttle" aka "suv" was no where in sight.

When we pulled up to the designated area I was instructed to park by an employee on a dirt bike (who quickly pointed to the specific parking spot and drove off). On my way to the spot my car got stuck in the sand. I understand this is the beach and this is very common.

After we pushed the car out of the sand I walked over to the BJ ATV trailer (about 10-20 feet away) . And asked a nearby person smoking a cigarette/ maybe a joint? where to repark. ( I thought he was another customer/later finding out that he was an instructor). He pointed to the exact location where I got stuck and gave a smirk and a shrug like it was a joke.

*Mind you he saw the whole thing and instructed us to straighten the car wheel and physically push the car out.

After reparking my car my family and I walked over to the ATV rental trailer and was shocked to see another family who was very upset at the condition of the provided rental atvs.

The customer(man) was being accused of being a liar and was being yelled at by a 2nd employee with the assist of the smoking employee( I mean yelling very excessively/loudly almost like a tantrum) in front of the man's wife, 2 young children( I'm guessing 6yrs and younger) and a late teenage son for allegedly breaking and damaging his atv(s).

Wow.

While all of this is going on his wife glances over to us with disappointment and frustration and warns us to film and document the condition of the atv before and during the ride.

Then proceeded to tell us that the ATV will drive you out and breakdown X minutes/ X distance into the ride. She explained to us that this has happened to them before.

I figured it was maybe bad luck?(strange considering the establishments only job is to rent out atvs) but the blatant Disrespect and Condescending tone that these 2 employees were showing to this man in front of his family didn't sit right with me.

So we left right away and headed back to the front office for a refund.

Once we were back in the front office I politely asked for a refund. When the employee asked me why I told her the weather condition quickly changed and I felt it was not ideal and frankly not safe. I asked for the manager who was "out and about" and unavailable for another Hour/ or to come back on Wednesday(I was here on Sunday at 5pm fyi)

THIS is when an older lady with blonde hair marched over to basically tell me off.

I told her my reasonings and before I could finish my sentence she cuts me off and was quick to raise her voice and talk down to me, basically shouting at me to man up because people come and ride in the rain all the time.

Complete disregard for me and my families safety.

This would've been my 1st time on an ATV and would rather not Risk me and my family Safety riding a motorized vehicle.

I'm a grown man and her tone was Extremely Condescending, Belittling, Disrespectful, and Unprofessional.

-You must not be from 'round here type vibes if you know what I mean................

While all of this is going on another family next to us was going through they're registration process and seemed very uncomfortable and confused ( the same employee who helped us) was going over $costs and jumping numbers.

We walked out and one of them followed us outside asking what happened. We explained the story and they were really shocked and walked right in for a refund.

While the Dunes are spectacular BJ's seems like an outdated organization stretched to the limits with the different parts of the organization (back office, beach operation) not communicating..
Why fill out forms online if you have to do it all over again and be in line for 1 h ? While the office staff is nice and helpful the process is very slow, awkwardly buerocratic and inefficient.
On vehicles: Why specifying the exact type of vehicle online (automatic) if those vehicles are not available when you are at the beach (you could wait another 1.5 h). There seems to be no connection between the website, the office and beach operation. Everything seems random and improvised.

If you experience a break down somewhere in the sand dunes do not expect to be rescuers any time soon. It took 2 h in our case, WhatsAp location markers were not read or even understood and the concern was more about their equipment then about people stuck 8 miles into sand dunes after sun set.

Also: the ragtag staff at the beach is not very friendly and you have to be careful to not be hit when they do their risky parking maneuvers (looks more like teenagers having fun).

So, all in all: not recommended

We made reservations and got there early. The wait was long however our time didn't start until we got the ATVs. It was fun a lot of traffic on the sand dunes so you have to pay attention. The rules are clearly explained. The equipment was good. I recommend this experience. Unfortunely this business and the beach won't be open much longer because they local government is shutting it down. Get there while you can.

We had a blast. We will for sure be back.
Floyd provided excellent service!

Make sure to bring water and a backpack to carry your belongings. Even if you are small breasted you might want to wear a bra or duct tape those babies down due to the enormous amount of jiggle-ition!!
