Step into the old powerhouse building and you could be transported back 50 to 100 years ago. Old equipment, including the massive Pelton Wheel which was the power source for nearby mines, showcase the many tools used in the mining past. Its a great stop for history buffs. It's a great way to show younger generations how the world once... More

Somehow this gem of a museum hasn't received the attention it truly deserves. The four of us literally had the place to ourselves and thoroughly enjoyed what became an essentially private two-hour tour led by friendly and knowledgeable docents John and Isaac. So many interesting exhibits to see here, with a surprising number of them functioning as working models. Just... More

We loved visiting the Northstar Mine Powerhouse in Grass Valley. The docent was very knowledgeable and gave you a little history. He was an engineer and could explain all the machines and they all worked! It was a delightful experience and made me appreciate the Grass Valley area.

If you're in either Grass Valley or Nevada City, it is worth making the pilgrimage to this museum. Situated on the site of an old mine power house it features the largest Pelton wheel ever made, 30' in diameter and capable of producing 1,000 Hp from running water. It houses a very large collection of Pelton wheels, mostly owned by... More

There is a Musuem which is the former Power Supply Source for the Empire Mine. Wow is it cool. Mostly Gold Mine related, the Pelton Wheel - World Largest! It was said the kids used to swing it around, faster and faster, then grab on and be twirled around upside down, that must have been something! They have a reenactment... More

A fantastic gold mine in the Mother Load of California. The docent that guided us through was very good. We got a private tour, mid week.

Make a day of the mines! See Empire and then come to north star! You will learn a lot, they have a donation box. Other than that no fee. Tour operator was very knowledgeable and fun!

We recently visited the Northstar Mine Powerhouse and Pelton Wheel Museum. For some reason, after many trips to Grass Valley and Nevada City over the years we had never made it to this particular museum. This place is super with several working machines that were used in the gold rush era including a fully operational 30’ Pelton Wheel. The wheel... More
