Overview
More
The Shinzen Friendship Garden is a traditional northwestern American Japanese Garden. The Garden was constructed to honor Fresno’s Sister City, Kochi, Japan, celebrating the spirit of understanding and promoting educational and cultural awareness. The beauty, grace and serenity of Japanese design is present in the use of varied plant material, rocks and stones, and water throughout the five acre garden. The garden is designed around the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter; granite markers identify each section. In the Fall of 2015 we were proud to be chosen to house and display the world-class Clark Bonsai Collection, which is now on permanent display in the garden, offering a seasonal rotation of some of the finest Bonsai in the United States.

We have four covered, viewing shelters called Tembo Dai and many benches situated underneath trees. Each Tembo Dais allows you to take in a wonderful view of each seasonal garden. Our Winter Tembo Dai is at the highest point of Shinzen and holds an impressive...More

Such a pleasant place to visit. One of the docents was so informative telling us about the Bonsai's. You;re in for a treat when you visit and very affordable for seniors too. Loved the bridges, and ponds, and streams.

First time to Fresno. The park is quite a distance from Hwy 99, but it's worth driving there. Had to pay $5/car entrance fee into Woodward Park, but didn't have to pay $5/pp into Shinzen Japanese Garden because we were there for a wedding. Beautiful...More

This place was beautiful. Wasn't expecting much, but was I blown away. We definitely take nature for granted sometimes. Here you can actually stop and smell the flowers and just enjoy the nice quiet scenery. A beautiful place to take pictures.

Beautiful! Very relaxing. If meditation is what you want come here. See the fish in the ponds and just relax. Can get over-whemingly hot in summer. Better to go in morning or evenings.

Affordable and pretty place to visit. My only complaint is that the bonsai garden isn't always open. We were disappointed not to see it. We also felt like the pond/lake on the other side of the Koi was dirty. Otherwise the place has gorgeous trees...More

Not sure if you picnic there, but Woodward Park surrounds the Japanese Gardens area, and you can picnic all over that very large park area.
