The Shinzen Friendship Garden is a traditional northwestern American Japanese Garden. The Garden was constructed to honor Fresno’s Sister City, Kochi, Japan, celebrating the spirit of understanding and promoting educational and cultural awareness. The beauty, grace and serenity of Japanese design is present in the use of varied plant material, rocks and stones, and water throughout the five acre garden. The garden is designed around the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter; granite markers identify each section. In the Fall of 2015 we were proud to be chosen to house and display the world-class Clark Bonsai Collection, which is now on permanent display in the garden, offering a seasonal rotation of some of the finest Bonsai in the United States.

Wonderful getting to see the gardens. It was hot that day, so it was uncomfortable there. Got to see the peacock and hen and their babies which made my day. The teahouse was nice that they were renovating. Nothing was in bloom because of it...More

This place is beautiful & very peaceful. We got some much needed exercise, all while enjoying all the beautiful landscaping. We went on a Saturday and unfortunately their Bonsai enclosure was closed, yet it was still worth it!!

This whole garden was beautiful. We especially enjoyed the bonsai garden. The guide took time to explain things in a fun way to our grand kids. We brought snacks and drinks to enjoy on one of the many strategically placed benches by the lake.

An easy peaceful stroll with peacocks (we even saw some peacock chicks following their mom), geese, swans, ducks and koi. The water lilies were blooming. There was a waterfall and little bridges to walk over. Lots of little benches to sit and take it all...More

A beautiful four-season garden with live peacocks, Japanese koi and a variety of geese and ducks. Lovely pathways to wander with seasonal blooms around every corner. In the middle of the garden sits an authentic tea house, a gift from Fresno's Japanese sister city. You...More

If you have the time for a quiet stroll, and are looking for a little tranquility in your life...this is the place. Beware of the peacocks...their shrill will bring chills down your back.

This is great place to visit and relax or simply meditate with the silence. The Shinzen Garden changes with the season and reflects the Japanese planting tradition that focuses on the plants and colors and how they change through the year. It is located within...More

We went during mating season. It was absolutely fascinating to see all of the male peacocks displaying all of their feathers. The gardens are beautiful and serene. Take a 1 or 2 hours of quiet time to enjoy the whole thing.

Not sure if you picnic there, but Woodward Park surrounds the Japanese Gardens area, and you can picnic all over that very large park area.

Yes there is an admission fee. Visit their website for fee info because fees vary by age. It is fairly affordable though.
