The Shinzen Friendship Garden is a traditional northwestern American Japanese Garden. The Garden was constructed to honor Fresno’s Sister City, Kochi, Japan, celebrating the spirit of understanding and promoting educational and cultural awareness.

The beauty, grace and serenity of Japanese design is present in the use of varied plant material, rocks and stones, and water throughout the five acre garden. The garden is designed around the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter; granite markers identify each section.

In the Fall of 2015 we were proud to be chosen to house and display the world-class Clark Bonsai Collection, which is now on permanent display in the garden, offering a seasonal rotation of some of the finest Bonsai in the United States.

This is great place to visit and relax or simply meditate with the silence. The Shinzen Garden changes with the season and reflects the Japanese planting tradition that focuses on the plants and colors and how they change through the year. It is located within Woodward park (a fee based park) and there is a fee to enter. The main... More

Spend time here. It will soothe your soul. It will heal your mind. It will relax your body. This meticulous garden is a treasure. The bonsai garden within is a temple to nature. Do not miss.

We went during mating season. It was absolutely fascinating to see all of the male peacocks displaying all of their feathers. The gardens are beautiful and serene. Take a 1 or 2 hours of quiet time to enjoy the whole thing.

I LOVE LOVE visiting this place. It's absolutely beautiful and serene. I can always spot peacocks just roaming around. All four different seasons are worth visiting. I wish it had less duck poo.

This is an excellent location to relax turn your thoughts off and recharge your batteries. It has many ponds, and the Canadian Geese float by, and if you are lucky night even see a sea turtle. There are cement Japanese lanterns and a big curved bridge to walk over. The gardens now has an entire Bonsai tree exhibit.

I love how quiet and peaceful this visit was. We came in mid February after much cold and rain. Not a lot was in bloom. I'd like to visit again in the spring or summer.

This was a surprise for Don "The Dragon" Wilson, who's mother is Japanese. Don was in Fresno for an appearance, so I took him to the Shinzen Japanese Garden. He was blown away. He loved the little Bonzai Trees. At the end of his trip to Fresno, I asked him "What did you like best about Fresno?" He responded "The... More

I LOVED this place! It was such a respite from the hustle and bustle of the California freeways. It was very rich in culture and history and the curators were really reverent and respectful to the surroundings and guests. The Bonzai exhibit was especially breath-taking with some trees being 500+ years old! I would highly recommend going (and bringing a... More

I took my mother here on a Saturday afternoon. It is tucked away and separate from the rest of Woodward Park which really allows you to appreciate the garden. The garden is well laid out and with each season, allows the garden to change slightly. If you appreciate landscape and garden design, this is a nice retreat.
