About
Trips departing from both Fort Bragg, CA and Willits, CA on the historic Redwood Route of Mendocino County. The Pudding Creek Express departs from Fort Bragg, on which your train will travel along the Pudding Creek Estuary to Glen Blair Junction on this short and scenic 1-hour, 7-mile roundtrip. You will be traveling over some of the first tracks laid down by the California Western Railroad in 1885. The Wolf Tree Turn is a scenic journey departing Willits and traveling over the highest point of the line. This 2-hour, 16-mile, round trip will take you over the Summit of our line (elevation 1,740 feet), through Tunnel #2, and down into the Noyo River Canyon. Our Railbikes experiences offer an entirely new way to see the redwoods. Electric-powered and virtually silent, our custom-built, patent pending, two-person railbikes will take you breezing along the world-famous Redwood Route, on one of two trips.

- Shelly6 contributionsMy husband and I did the “Railbikes on the Noyo” excursion ($564 total). It was beautiful weather. The packed lunches were nice. I appreciated that the guides let us space out. Negatives: 1. I envisioned being in tall redwoods, but the trees are young/small because the rail was used for logging. 2. If they're going to charge that much money, they need to maintain the bikes better. We had to stop five times because our brake was rattling loudly and malfunctioning. 3. The guides gave us walkie talkies to get ahold of them if we needed something but we tried several times and couldn't reach them. In the end, it was a cool experience and a nice day, but we both felt it was overpriced for what it was. We also felt they should have handled mechanical issue differently. They were more than willing to keep adjusting/fixing it but they never apologized or recognized that it was a damper on our experience. One guide kept pitching the train to the bar that night. He should had offered us free tickets. The train runs either way, it wasn't close to full, they still would have made money off the drinks we bought , and they would have had happier customers. (I actually think they should offer free tickets to everyone on the bike trip, but at the very least they should use them to compensate for any problems.)Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 17, 2024
- GHST-LEADER4 contributionsThe tour we did was the Railbikes to Glen Briar Bar. This specific option wasn’t listed on the dropdown but wanted to specify what your we did first. My fiancé and I joined my friend and his GF to do the rail bikes which led to the bar that was tucked away in the middle of the woods. We did the night tour and started around 6pm, the weather was foggy as it usually is in Fort Bragg, and we got back to the station right around 10pm. Without giving away too much, the rail bike was an unexpected blast and we are dead set on doing it again in the future! The bar itself was an incredible experience as well. Surrounded by tall redwoods, hanging lights, and live music, there are campfires going and heaters keeping everyone warm. And there are games like jenga and big connect four, and other various activities like cornhole and other games. We were offered a gift box as a complimentary gift with the rail bike purchase which came with a s’more bundle of marshmallows, graham crackers, and hersheys chocolate to use on the fire pit. They also came with 2 tokens which are used for free drinks or bottle of wine. We drank, walked around the big area, and made smores while we laughed the night away. When it was time to go, we rail biked back to the station and that was night. I absolutely recommend the experience! Please don’t be afraid of the price, it is well worth it in my opinion.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 9, 2024
- Erin KSan Rafael, California165 contributionsWe had a blast! We were all in for a bit of exercise so were surprised to find out that the bikes are electric - you can cruise the whole way on just the electric throttle, if you want. We pedaled and thought it was easy and fun. Our dogs enjoyed the dog trailer - we brought their favorite bed and blankets and they were perfectly happy. It's about a 45-minute pedal along the river and through the glorious redwoods, a 45-minute stop at the train station in the forest, then a 45-minute pedal back. The guides, Ember and Caden, were delightful and informative.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 25, 2024
- jv66210Oklahoma City, Oklahoma152 contributionsI love that they are dog friendly! Dogs are allowed anywhere in the enclosed cars and the open car. They didn't mind our big dog laying in the aisle, and they didn't mind other passengers' little dogs sitting in the seats. It is open seating, and you can change seats on the return trip as long as someone didn't leave their backpack/jacket/etc to reserve their same seat for the ride back. Malachi the singing conductor was very talented on several instruments and provided great entertainment.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 16, 2024
- Kerry M4 contributionsWe had a great time on the Pumpkin Express from Willits. The staff were friendly and we enjoyed the entertainer. The ride was beautiful. The tickets were a bit pricey for the short ride, especially since there was no price break for kids under 12. Otherwise, everyone enjoyed themselves. Nothing like a good train ride.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 21, 2024
- 945RichardW35Honolulu, Hawaii4 contributionsI took in the hike along the tracks to Glen Blair. I think this a very unique hike as it starts in Fort Bragg, which, even in July, is very cool and overcast because of the cold ocean currents pulling fog onshore from right off the coast, but became actually warm within just a couple miles inland. Our guide John was very congenial and seemed to sincerely like his job explaining all the history and natural phenomenon of the area. John also sings at the Glen Blair bar on weekends. We then took the train back to the station. I made it back in time to take in the railroad shop tour. This is a very nice tour of a working train shed. Two steam locomotives, a passenger car, and a caboose were being refurbished for excursions. It definitely looked, and smelled, like the working shop that it is. Chuck, my guide, obviously has a great passion for the railroad as he's worked there for many many years. He even gave me a personal tour of the Mendocino Coast Model Railroad, which is located right next to the railroad shop. It is a very fascinating G-scale layout of the historical logging industry in the area. I look forward to returning in a couple years, after the collapsed tunnel is cleared, and the line all the way to Willits is open once again.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten July 19, 2024

- Paula PThousand Oaks, California130 contributionsA blend of history, nostalgia, and natural beauty. This iconic attraction was a unique way for us to experience the breathtaking landscapes of Mendocino and it’s perfect for all ages. The train was so charming it felt like we were transported back in time. The train had wooden interiors, complete with large windows. Once we started moving the gentle chugging of the engine added to the authentic experience. The route itself is nothing short of spectacular. Winding through towering redwood forests, over rustic trestle bridges, and along the tranquil Noyo River, the views are postcard-worthy. For nature lovers, the train offers an up-close encounter with some of California's most stunning scenery. There’s also an open-air car, which is ideal for photography or simply enjoying the crisp, pine-scented air. One highlight of the journey was when we got to disembark and explore the surroundings at select stops. We hiked a short trail, taking in the serene beauty of the forest. Families with young children will find this to be a magical experience, as the train ride often feels like stepping into a storybook. It’s also a hit with history buffs and railroad enthusiasts who will appreciate the care taken to preserve this piece of American heritage. We were told the Skunk Train frequently hosts themed rides, such as holiday specials and music events, making it worth checking their calendar for something unique.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 22, 2025

Glen Blair Bar on the Skunk Train. Don't do it!
We expected so much more. Reading all the reviews, I'm now wondering if some of those were paid responses.
Definitely not worth $50 per person.
You're told to arrive 15 minutes early. We did just that and we're close to the last to board. 30 minutes works be more appropriate. We took the 630pm train to the Glen Blair Bar hoping for a nice night sitting around a camp fire, listening to some music, and enjoying a glass of wine and a cocktail. Disembarking the train is through 1 door only. 4 train cars full of people through 1 door. By the time we finally stepped off the train, there were no seats outside to be had except those that were wet without any way to dry them. So much for sitting around the fire. We went "inside" the bar and finally found seats at the very back with a view that was completely blocked by the "heaters" that put out so little heat you could place your hand on the metal grates. The wine and liquor selection is pitiful and $49 for a prepackaged charcuterie plate is a complete ripoff! Considering the price paid for a 20+ minute train ride, we could not have been more disappointed.
Save your money for one of the many great restaurants in Ft Bragg or Mendocino. This train ride is a complete waste of money.

Dear Traveling_Man_1638,
Thank you for your review. We are sad that our woodland bar did not meet your expectations.
We have recently reconfigured the reservations so that our boarding and disembarking move more swiftly. Thank you for your feedback. Since there are no cars to this bar everyone is compelled to arrive at pre-arranged times. Standing in long lines is not our goal, however, and we've improved this with process.
Wet chairs can happen! The redwoods are famous for their mist. Normally there are towels at the bar to dry off a preferred outdoor seat. Those seats are very moveable, so if there's a spot in the pavilion or out by the firepits, guests frequently reconfigure the arrangements to meet their needs (and find optimal viewing spots or conversation nooks).
We are constantly improving our bar. Perhaps you could tell us what you are looking for that we did not carry? We use major brands for the well and have a handful of local wines, plus canned cocktails and usually a hot toddy or coffee drink. It's not everything, but it's usually something for everyone. Please let us know your favorites.
There are lots of great restaurants in Fort Bragg and Mendocino, and we do hope that our guests find the time to patronize those as well. We each offer a very special piece of local hospitality, history, and ambiance.

The railbike experience departing from the Skunk Train Depot in Fort Bragg, California was an enjoyable, leisure, scenic ride through the redwoods.
Pros:
*Scenery
*RailBike experience
*The hike up the mountain during our break.
*Tour Guides Johnny (very informative/knowledgeable, charming and friendly) and Bruce were absolutely great!
Cons:
*The price of $250.00 per railbike (seating two people/riders).
I needed to reserve two railbikes for the three of us, costing $500.00.
The price has considerably increased from just a few years ago, almost by three times.
*The helmets were *well used*.
I had my grandson bring his own helmet from home and I wore a baseball cap style hat under my helmet for minimal contact. I highly recommend bringing your own personal helmet, as helmets are required for riding the railbike.
(For the money they bring in with the railbike tours alone, at $250.00 per railbike, they can afford to purchase new helmets.)
*Length of tour/ride.
In my opinion, I (along with the rest of my crew) felt the tour was too short, with approximately just 3 miles one way and 3 miles back for a total of six miles. The ride left me wanting more. I would have enjoyed a much longer ride (especially considering what I paid for the experience). I would have paid for a second ride had the price been lower.
Hopefully, once the collapsed tunnel is reconstructed, the ride will be even longer.
Note:
As of June 2021, construction is underway with wooden walking bridges and platforms/stage with future plans that sound very promising for future riders.

We did the rail bikes while visiting the Mendocino area. Just a short drive to Fort Bragg it seemed like a fun, outdoorsy thing to do! We are glad we did as it was very unique! Originally we thought we would have to pedal these two-person cars but they have “electric assistance” which made it MUCH more enjoyable!
Each car seats two people and there is a basket with a bungee cord to strap down jackets or purses. Helmets are provided and because it is a “federal railway”, at the time of our visit in late June, masks were required while on the rail bike.
After about 25 minutes we got to the end of the line where we were shown two various, clearly marked hiking trails. One was more challenging with elevations and the other more level. We had plenty of time to do both.
We both thought there were things that could be done to justify the rather pricey cost. Perhaps a free bottle of water at the stopping point so travelers wouldn’t have to bring one. They could even sell them along with snacks and maybe reduce the cost a bit.
Other than that, we really enjoyed our afternoon on the bikes and especially the humorous crew that filled us in on the history of the area and the rail lines. We would definitely recommend, especially if they have a Groupon deal!

Amazing journey on the Rail Bikes on the Noyo. Ethan and Ashton were awesome as they led our team 12.5 miles up the river to the Noyo camp and then back. The stop at the Noyo camp where we ate our lunches was beautiful. They post that the trip is "strenuous". However, I am 66 years old, in okay shape, and I found the journey delightful. With the peddle assist, I had no issue peddling all 12.5 miles with a boost from my wife or from the electrical assist when the uphill portion was higher than normal. On the way back, it was really easy, as it was mostly downhill and you let the pedal assist run the rail bike. The only issue was the battery packs on the bikes. Anytime a battery pack went out (we had 8 bikes), everyone had to stop and wait for the battery to be changed. Going the 1/2 mile down the hill, not much problem. Of course, the only thing I could think of was that I have to go back up this hill. And yes, that part was difficult, but I made it. It would be amazing if they had a van pick everyone up where the rail bikes stop and take them back up to the top. That would have been the best end of an amazing journey. Riding though the redwoods with the wind at your face - there is nothing like it anywhere. I highly recommend the rail bikes on the Noyo as a great 4-5 hour part of your day. We took my entire family with ages ranging from 6 to 66, and everyone had a great time.

If you’ve never been outside of a city, and you arrive by helicopter, you may enjoy this woefully lacking experience. It iinvolved a 20 minute train ride through a rather scruffy stretch of woods, then a 25 minute stop during which you can take a 10 minute walk in a nicer wooded area, then returning along the same disappointing route from which we started. The tab for this depressing experience was $160 for four persons — a total ripoff! The Skunk Train’s attraction is obviously the result of massive advertising and public relations efforts which totally mask the near worthless enterprize beneath the surface.

I did the Pudding Creek Railbike tour with my dog as part of our road trip down the 101! It was a really fun experience and my dog did great in the crate that was attached to the back of my railbike. The company provided a tarp over the top to help shield the sun, or rain if that were to of happened, and I appreciated that initiative from the company. I had no issues pedaling us both on my own, especially with the motor assist. Really nice team of people! I was in the back on the way out, so missed quite a bit of what the guide said as he stayed near the front right before the start of the ride and the group did not wait as I had to "unload" my dog when we reached our pitstop at the trail before heading back while the guide talked about some of the history, missing that as well. It was an expensive adventure, but I am glad we did it!

The train ride from Fort Bragg to Glen Blair Bar was so fun. We chose to ride in the open air car and enjoyed the cool crisp weather and beautiful scenery on the way to the bar. Lots of cute dogs along for the ride. The bar was darling, with twinkling lights, huge fire pits with plenty of fire wood to keep the fires going. Plenty of picnic tables too. The music was dreamy. The full moon set the mood. The bar was well stocked for basic cocktails, beer and wine. If you want to have a fun outdoor evening activity it’s worth the ride, although the price per person is pretty steep for such a short ride. (Tip: I used the zip code of the place we stayed and received a significant discount). Enjoy!

We did the skunk train bikes. It was an awesome experience. The staff/guides were professional but fun. We went the week between Christmas and new years and they had 2 time slots each day (11am and 1:30pm) but added a 4p slot for the added groups that wanted to go. We were one of the added groups and it was cold but with appropriate dress attire it was fine. The Bikes/ rail carts have a small electric assist motor if you get tired. It was a 30min ride that ended in the woods where you could do a short hike through the redwoods. Nothing spectacular to see on the hike but it was nice and not to difficult. Im on the heavier side and the hike got me to a light sweat. After about another 30min at the end the staff/guides turned our rail carts around and we got back on and road back to the station.
Now the price, it is $250 for a rail cart/bike that seats 2 riders. For us it was worth the price to help keep this experience open and running. The tracks we were on could have been longer but do to a collapse in the tunnel a few years ago it hadn't been cleared yet. They do plan to start clearing it in 2022. So we will deffinitly be coming back one or 2 more times. Hopefully the tunnel will be cleared one of those times.

We rode the skunk train rail bikes. Thankfully, the weather was nice. We left at 1:30pm quickly to find our motorized bike was not functioning properly. We peddled as far as we could at #2 mile marker and literally had to abandon the bike along the side of the trail. One of the Guides gave us his bike after the rest of the group left us behind and we had to help the guide pick up and remove the broken bike off the track.
We rode a little farther and realized bike #2 also begin to have issues the motor would not stay engaged.
We eventually made it to the staging area where we found they were doing construction and the platform was closed and there were a few picnic tables in the sun, 1 porta potty which was dirty and the tank was full.
I spoke to 2 different guides explaining to them that the 2nd rail bike was also having trouble, they said they would look at it to discover the motor was indeed not working properly.
They provided us with bike #3. Third times a charm, I guess. This was much appreciated after peddling most of the way there. The return time was supposed to be around 2:45 we did not return until 4:00pm because of both of our bikes malfunctioned and a third bike’s battery died and had to be replaced from another couple.
I believe this is an extremely overpriced amount of $250 per bike.

I was disappointed that the ride was short to a collapsed tunnel with zero amenities. There is major construction so perhaps in the future there might be some educational exhibits. There is a short walking trail up the hillside. If undertaking that trail, you better be a runner or first off the train or you will be the last back on the train.
The comments by the conductor was hazy and not very interesting. Not much of a view as you passed through the tunnel of trees.
I thought I purchased an hour and a half train ride, not a 20 minute ride out and back and limited ground time with no signs, guides or entertainment.
If I were to try the skunk train again, it would only be the willets ride.
Again, not aware of the collapsed tunnel, short ride duration and a lack of amenities at the tunnel stop.
Think about spending this money before riding the Fort Bragg trip.

Anybody have any reviews regarding the VIP experience for train rides? Regular price is $54 vs VIP $94.... Is the VIP option worth if for the skunk train???
Written November 11, 2022
There are 3 of us. Can one person do the peddling easily??
Written September 6, 2020
Only two riders per bike and one person can probably handle the peddling. Even though has battery assist, you still have to peddle.

I see there is a weight limit of 250lbs per rider. Do they weigh you? Are they strict?
