Dam its a Dam. Big holds back water, Walking trails along road, BUT NOT ON STRUCTURE. For security reasons

Beware that one can drive past it and park in the nearby trails to bike or walk past it. It is not like the traditional state dams where one can park in a parking lot and walk near it to view. You cannot with this...More

Nice view, nice lake above the dam. Nothing super special here. Johnny cash bike trail was really nice and a good way to see the dam.

Something to do, but definitely not a must. Rather, just schedule an activity that requires a drive past. Nice to look at but not worth the time to schedule a special visit.

This dam was built in 1956, and it's primary purpose was to prevent flooding of the American River in the Sacramento community. It's done its job very well, although there's been a couple of close calls (like 1986) when the volume discharged almost breached the...More

A great way to view the dam is to park in the strip mall at Auburn Folsom Rd. & Folsom Crossing Rd. Walk across Auburn-Folsom Rd. and you can walk the entire width of the dam for a bird's eye view of the dam and...More

Park next to the American River water Education Center. Then walk across the bridge call Folsom Dam Crossing. It's a far more interesting seeing if the dam is spilling water. But to be clear , it is impossible to visit this damn close up. This...More

Of course, up close is relative. It's still a bit of a distance from the bike trail, but at least you can take your time having a look. From the road, you can't stop, so it's just a drive by. If you like looking at...More

Nice site. More impressive around rainy season (when there is rain from October to March) as they let water out into the American River. No real way to stop on the road nearby as it is a 55 mph road with no shoulder. You can...More
