About
Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad's track may only be four miles long, but their trains cover decades in that distance. Here, a duo of antique steam engines—one built in 1913, the other in 1928—tow travelers through the piney wilderness of Sierra National Forest. Along the way, guides provide a glimpse of how America's wilderness looked to the railroad companies and loggers as they worked their way westward and shipped raw materials back east. The lesson also incorporates a bit of biology, as tour-leaders will often deviate from historical discussion to talk about local wildlife or how lumberjacks evolved their ax hands.
On certain evenings, the conductors extend the track tour from one-hour to three. Guests begin the evening with a barbecue dinner, then ride the train to a campfire for a sing-along. They then get back on the locomotive for an evening trip back to the modern era.

If sitting behind the engine , be prepared for a gentle must from the smoke stack and maybe a few pine needles. - DOITYMAYCardiff, United Kingdom164 contributionsWhat a fab experienceWe came here a few years ago and as back in America wanted to visit again. The steam engine is a joy. Big and beautiful. I love the whistle and the steam. It’s an hour ride thru the mountain forest. You have a personal storyteller no recorded voice over. You stop for 15 mins and you can get off the train. It gives you plenty of photo opportunities or you can just watch the engine fill up with water. The staff running the train are all friendly and knowledgeable. Once the ride is over you can eat your own food or buy from their shop and use the many picnic tables. We sat at the table eating whilst watching the train cool down. This is a fab few hours out. You don’t have to be a train enthusiast to enjoy this.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 22, 2023
- Dorin C3 contributionsMagicalThe trip itself was a great experience. My husband and I had a awesome time from traveling to dinner , the train ride to the camp fire. Seeing a shooting star while riding the train in the open air was magnificent . We really the enjoyed the guys singing at the campfire including the awesome lady with them as well. Overall the trip was great. Thank you Sugar pine for the great adventure.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 24, 2023
- Laurence BLos Angeles, California121 contributionsA magnificent opportunity to learn more about the area and expereince steam train travelLooking at doing something less streneous than hiking Yosemite we took the morning off and booked a trip in Mountain train. We were glad we did Set between the trees, the station has a small museum, shop, restarant and lots of props with regards train yard , fasinating for young and old. We splurged and booked first class, which included drinks and definitely more comfortable seats. I would reccomend although for young children riding in actual tree trunks might make for a more exciting story. The train itself is a straightforward loop, but comes with a conductor who didn't stop talking ( in a good way) and sharing stories about the train company and the forest. A stop at halfway mark allowed us to stretch our legs and explore the little camp out site which holds jazz evenings, and star light rides A real jewel on the outskirts of Yosemite and a very enjoyable morningVisited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 25, 2023

- Vickie4 contributionsGreat Activity for the Entire Family! The train ride was a wonderful addition to our vacation time in the area. The crew at the station, museum, and on board the train were very friendly and knowledgable. It was relaxing and the scenery was beautiful. It only falls short of five stars because the sound system was lacking. We rode in the "log" cars and the speakers were so bad you couldn't understand what the guide was saying. You can hear it but very hard to decipher.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 28, 2023
- Greg LLos Angeles, California27 contributionsA fun and unique experienceI really enjoyed this train ride. The location can't be beat - such a beautiful forest. The steam locomotive was amazing, a very unusual design as far as I know. You can see so much of the working parts of the engine. It drove a train of several open cars and two cars with the benches made of carved-out logs. The train ride took about an hour, which felt just about right, including a brief stop at the far point of the loop. Check-in was easy (with prepaid reservations made online). All of the staff members were friendly and seemed to be happy working there. Parking was adequate for all of us. The entire train was full on a Monday morning in October, so make reservations early! Oh, and while it was low 80s in Fresno, with the shade of the trees and the higher elevation, it was 55 degrees while we were riding in the open train cars.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 2, 2023
- RetiredTired116 contributionsLearning and Fun!The train is authentic, and the narrative both educational and entertaining. The staff is accommodating and kind; the sandwiches among the best we've eaten when provided by a tour company. The train runs a slow loop so small ones and those prone to motion sickness will be just fine. The caboose seating is so comfortable and allows the wonderful scent of pine through the open windows. The grounds and souvenir choices are well thought out--good value, too. Overall, this is not an excellent experience and well worth the money.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 5, 2023
- Robert WVisalia, California3 contributionsA very fun, informative and worthwhile activityThis is a very nice family activity. We love the history of the area, Learning about the lumber operations that took place here, and the train itself. Conductor was very funny and very informative. The halfway stop for the locomotive to take on water was really nice. We got off the train and walked around, saw a pretty stream and enjoyed being outdoors. This is must-do for your kids. Dads / Husbands - be forewarned!! There are gift shops!! 😊Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2023

We live in Fresno and we have been to the Sugar Pine Railroad many, many times. Over the last 30 years we've brought family and friends. Our last visit was with our youngest grandson who was 7. He has a blast because I narrated for him. You see, the speaker system was broken so we could not hear anything that was being said.
Now, imagine that you are a tourist from another country and this is the first time you've been on a steam train.
What memories are you going to take home with you? Great happy ones that you tell everyone about the awesome experience you had riding in a actual steam engine from way back when or, oh we went on this train but we don't know anything about it except we went in a loop in some woods and it was loud.
I'm sorry but,for the prices that are charged EVERYTHING should be in great working order. The guy that came into our section of the train said that the speaker system had been working intermittently for a while now. They keep trying to fix it but it keeps breaking down. Really? Wires get old, speakers rust, csystems need replacing from time to time. It's called running a business! ☹️ Then there's the lovely lunch that is included for the tour bus full of tourists. Hamburgers/Hotdogs that were made who knows how long ago all stacked up next to each other. Just grab one get the side, napkin, utensils grab some water or punch? If you want more it's costly and they close up quickly!
No one seems friendly except the person selling the tickets and then only half-hardedly.
I remember when you were welcomed into the store where you buy your tickets and then told all about everything else you could do while you were there. The speakers worked, when you stopped to refill the water and people got off to walk around someone would tell you about the area and about the dinners they had there during the summer months. When you walked into the museum, they would show you things and what they were used for. It was such a wonderful place. You came home feeling refreshed and like you knew a bit of the history of California. I sure hope that the conditions get better and not worse. (The month we went might have been May, it was the 1st month they were open)

This was a really nice experience. My nine year old was the happiest I’ve seen him on our whole Yosemite vacation during the sing along. The band was excellent and everyone was really nice. The food was good, especially when you consider how many they are trying to serve at one time. We ended up going with the first class caboose because by the time I purchased tickets (the day before), the regular seats were sold out. There are some perks to it (free drinks during the dinner before the trip, cushioned seats, inside (if that’s your thing), and an assigned guide who will answer your questions). But, I didn’t think it was worth the extra cost (nearly double for adults and three times as much for kids), so would suggest you book a little earlier (note there are no refunds, just re-booking) and go with the standard seating.

I can’t say enough good things about our Moonlight Special experience at Sugar Pine Mountain Railroad! Everyone working was super friendly & professional. You can tell they really care about you having a great time & work very hard to keep everything clean as it was spotless, especially since it’s all outdoors. Check in was simple. We arrived at 5:15pm for the 6:00pm special & shopped in their little store, toured the museum, & sent complimentary postcards back home. We opted for the steak dinner which was very good (you eat dinner before the train departs while listening to live music).
When dinner was over, we boarded the logger train & chose to sit in the outside section then headed to Lewis Canyon while viewing the giant sugar pine trees. The conductor said these trees had the largest pine cones in the world which we had seen on our picnic table earlier. We arrived at the stop & everyone sat around the fire. All ages were singing & clapping along with the band to old campfire songs like, “She’ll be coming round the mountain”. This was so much fun! The band really has a good time with the crowd.
It was incredible to ride the train back in perfect weather under the dark sky & see the gorgeous blanket of stars above.
What they have here is incredibly special & was an absolutely perfect end to our Yosemite vacation!

Lots of history facts are provided. The train goes pretty slowly and I could see some children were definitely ready for it to be over, but children like my 5 year old son seemed to enjoy every turn where he could see the engine. The scenery is nice if you like tons of evergreen trees. They give each family a few postcards as a souvenir as you show your ticket to get onboard and they seem to really care about customer feedback as they hand a feedback card to you as well.
We also did the gold panning, which was very well operated by an elderly gentleman with a lot of patience with the children. He was very helpful, knowledgeable, and a great instructor with showing the process of how to gold pan. Each pan had gold in it, so it's nice they guarantee some find.
They also had food options for lunch, but we only grabbed a 12oz to go coffee for $2.50. It didn't seem like anything special but nice to have a warm beverage.

The experience itself was wonderful. Staff is courteous, knowledgeable, and kind. The views are spectacular. My biggest complaint is that the amount of anti maskers on the train was staggering. It is the responsibility to enforce the rules. They safety is of utmost importance and I do believe this falls in that category. It's as simple as telling people they are not allowed on the train without a mask. Additionally there was zero enforcement of so I'll distance seating. People packed on there like cattle to the slaughterhouse. I wanted to provide my kids with a memorable experience and one of my kids are too young to comprehend wearing a mask and her safety was compromised by self-entitled "adults" that refuse to wear masks. It's the agency who provides this experience that is responsible for ensuring the safety of all guests in all circumstances. Otherwise, outside of the pandemic circumstance, I do believe this to be a worthwhile and memorable experience.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We strive to make the experience safe and memorable for all. We've taken steps including cutting the train's capacity in half, sanitizing the entire train between trips and requiring masks indoors per the county and state guidelines. Your feedback is critical to us and it's imperative to us that you feel safe aboard. We will make sure that we take it into account when we open again for the 2021 season. We sincerely hope that you will come back and visit us soon.

This place is amazing and the staff is so nice. We took the Moonlight Special and it was great our kids had a blast and so did the adults. The meal was delicious and filling and the train is amazing. The band was funny and entertaining., and really made everyone feel at home. This is a real steam train not one of those fake diesel look alikes, and you get the full experience of the sounds and smells of a 90+ year old engine, they have open air cars and covered ones as well. I would highly recommend Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad to folks of all ages.

This is a must if you are in the area, it is different, fun and interesting. You can sit in log seats or in open cars. The train follows part of the original grade that was carved into the mountain by the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company in the early 20th century. As the steam engine pulls the train through the forest the conductor gives a history of the area which is informative and entertaining. This adventure is good for adults of all ages and children. You can check out the Thornberry Museum and learn about the history of the Sugar Pine Railroad, you and the kids can pan for gold and checkout the gift shop.

The train ride was perfect; the whole experience was sprinkled with tidbits that were perfect for children. They gave us postcards that the kids could write while waiting to family and they could mail it in the little box and the postage would be paid. We went early and did the gift shops/museum beforehand, so the grands had fun with their train gear during the ride. Afterwards, they were excited about chili dogs; the menu was what kids love. Then we sprung for the gold panning, and that turned out to be a highlight. The guy that ran that attraction was the epitome of excellence in interactive teaching. They learned, participated and brought home gold. I'm a teacher so I was very impressed by the caliber of that experience. They were so excited. My past experiences with gold panning with the kids were nowhere near this one. We loved it.

10 stars for the Sugar Pine Railroad! I've been meaning to stop by this place on the way to Yosemite for ages and finally, a friend and I had the chance to go and we loved every single second! This would be the perfect stop for so many folks - as two outdoorsy twenty-somethings, we were totally thrilled with our experience! However, kids/families, your parents, my parents...everyone could enjoy this charming train ride through the forest.
The train is a special type of steam engine on a narrow gauge. It's a two mile loop and takes about an hour. In the middle of the journey, you stop in a small wooded area for a short stroll along the creek. Strongly suggest you purchase your tickets in advance, the entire day had already sold out when we arrived that morning for our ride. We especially enjoyed the commentary from Mike, one of the conductors, who spoke about the special type of steam engine, the history of logging and the area, tree identification, and so on.
Every single employee was so friendly and kind. They have a small cafe on site with coffee and other goodies for purchase. I know I'm getting old when I'm excited by the book selection...but their gift shop had some incredible books and I purchased a Sierra tree identification guide. Also worth mentioning they have a kid's depot and a cute gift shop. Your ticket comes with a few postcards to send to your family and a cute "Ricky the Raccoon" card for the kids as well.

We had a wonderful time. My son Jack uses a power wheelchair, and we often have disappointing experiences with accessibility issues. Every staff person we encountered was friendly and helpful, ensuring that Jack enjoyed his entire experience. The railroad was well-prepared to make sure that we got onto the train, and no one made us feel as if it was a problem to help us. One note: none of the wheelchair-access parking spaces are designated for wheelchair vans, so we weren't able to extend the van ramp without backing out of the parking space, which blocks traffic. Creating a couple of spots for vans with ramps would be awesome!

What COVID19 prevention measures are currently in place?
Any capacity reduction, social distancing, and mask requirements?
Written July 20, 2020
They recommend mask when I went back in June. Call and ask.

Are the routes and narration the same between the day train and night train?
Written June 28, 2020
The narration and route is the same. The daytime trip has a brief layover to explore the National Forest. The dinner train has a layover for a sing-a-long campfire program and the experience of coming back at night.

How much scenery can you see on the midnight train ride? Is seems like it would be too dark to see anything.
Written October 10, 2018
It’s not the scenery that you’d go for on a midnight open air ride. It was exhilarating because of all the other senses - the crisp night air, the clear moon and stars, the strong scent of the pine, and the sound of the train. It was spectacular. Highly recommend.

Does anyone know generally how hot we can expect to get on the ride around July 1st at 2 p.m.? I understand no one can tell me the weather exactly, but I'm wondering if it is a mostly shady and breezy ride, or if the route is mostly in the direct sun. We will be taking a 2, 6, & 8 year old and I don't want everyone to be miserable if it is directly in the sun and hot the whole way.
Written June 14, 2018
Mostly through tall trees with shade. Also you can ride in covered carriages
