I've been visiting Methana since I was a child and every time I discover something new. Methana is a peninsula in the Northen-east part of Peloponnisos but administratively belongs to Attika region. It is easily accessible by car (180 km from Athens, around 1 1/2 to 2 hours) and by ferry boat, though I personally prefer the car because it gives you freedom in your program (ferry boat's timetable is very limited). Methana has a unique combination of mountain and sea. You can hike, do mountain bike, enjoy the sea, visit the volcano (a bit tricky to find it, but if you get lost, ask around, they will be more than willing to help you), enjoy a cup of coffee or a nice meal next to the sea (literally). It is a place ideal for couples or families. For years Methana has been my little secret.

Grab a cab from town and head over to the volcano. Takes about 20 minutes by car. The driver will let you off at the trail and you'll have to walk about 30 minutes up to the top (and then head down). The trail is not a novice trail or for those out of shape. Views are majestic.

We walked the rout to the volcano which was excellent with the most stunning views. You need good shoes as at times you have to clamber over rocks ect. But it is a really enjoyable walk and takes about half an hour from the car park each way given g time for photo opportunities ect. The drive up and down are also beautiful and the village down below is so nice with a beautiful little restaurant for refreshments. There is no charge to do the walk and it is a lovely way to see views of lots of the island. Then at the end dinner in the port at jimmys a perfect end.

The hike to the top of the volcano was amazing. You transition from the normal, Greek countryside to lava rocks and boulders. Beware that people who climb to the top need to be very careful of their footing! Probably not great for small children but my friends and I certainly enjoyed it.

Our first encounter with a volcano! I guess that would be true for most people too. According to Wikipedia it hasn't been active since 1700, so we felt pretty safe.

After the scenic drive up, there's a small parking area by the side of the road. The path up the volcano is well marked and fairly easy to follow. It takes about 15-20 minutes to reach the top, as far as the path goes anyway. If you're expecting a perfect crater, gushing steam and clouds of sulphur, you're going to be disappointed. The top of the volcano is not much more than a fissure in the rock. However, what is definitely worth seeing are the rich, brown swathes of now solidified volcanic rock. Despite their age almost nothing grows on them; it's like someting from another planet. Also, the views across the sea to the island of Aegina are a bit special.

If you're in the area and you have 60-90 minutes spare, it's definitely worth a visit. And if you're into geocaching, there's one up there too although we didn't find it.

This is not a walk to attempt if you have mobility issues. We turned back after 5minutes. The ‘path’ was a scramble over rocks some of which were loose.

Good option for one day trip from Athens! The trail is about 20-30 minutes on foot and easy to walk. You can see everywhere the volcanic rocks. Also driving to the volcano there is a beautiful village before Kammeni Chora wich is built upon the volcanic ashes.
