Our 2/28/2020 morning trip on the Manute'a is our third time, and we plan to return. Our trip's Captain Craig and the crew were first rate and the experience just can't be topped. We've gone to other companies at both Dana Point and Newport Beach, but Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari are the gold standard for consistant experiences. If my wife didn't have some physical challenges we would be out on their Zodiac trips. This is their oldest but also most popular boat with underwater viewing ports in the bow and counting the net area, comfortable room for ~25 people in the front. There's shaded seating for those who need it. Hope we can make it more often. Our oldest daughter & son-in-law loved the experience when we treated them 2 years back, and we plan to treat our youngest daughter & spouse when their schedule allows & they're back in SoCal. The crew knowledge is impressive. The narration and easy Q&A provide new information every trip we've taken. I enjoyed the viewing pods with my daughter last trip, but just delighted staying topside with my wife this trip. It can be chilly, but this time was unseasonably mild. Superpod of over 100 dolphins which we've seen each of our trips. 4 gray whales cavorting for a while seen on our way back. No other whales this time but need to plan our calendar better. They had sigted a blue the week before our trip. Their photographer is good; portrait/photo collage (us in the center surrounded by actual shots of the dolphins and whales we saw) is produced on the return trip so if you dedide to buy it you can take it with you. ($15 for 8-1/2x11) You can also buy the digital download when you get home if you want more prints. These folks have put the pressure on the other businesses to up their game, but they're still way ahead of the pack. They offer special extended trips regularly, and even private charter events. Check them out!

Captain Dave’s whale watching whale watching was the highlight of our trip to Dana point California. We had Captain Neil and Stacie they were excellent. Stacie was very knowledgeable about the marine life and made sure our family had a great time. I highly recommend doing a private charter it was well worth the money and look forward to coming back and doing it again. Thank you for making such a wonderful memory for our family for Mother’s Day weekend.

Four of us went out in Captain Dave's zodiac style boat, the Allswell. It was a beautiful day but with a heavy swell from a storm. The Allswell ran through the swells easily with minimal rocking. We found a pod of about 40 bottlenose dolphins almost immediately. They entertained us with spectacular leaps out of the water and bow riding our boat. Captain Jim heard that there was a gray whale several miles away and the Allswell got there quickly. Because fo that speed we were able to watch the whale play with some floating kelp for about 15 minutes before heading back to the harbor. This was our 4th whale watch with Captain Dave's Whale and Dolphin Safari and we highly recommend them.

We went on an overcast Monday afternoon on the 2pm tour on the Manute’a boat on July 3rd. The boat was great with plenty of seating even though it was full. We saw several fin whales in different locations and it was so moving to see them that some in our group teared up! The captain was quick to find the whales and keep on them before they dove down after several breaths. The narration and information were top notch too! We then found hundreds of dolphins and stayed with them for at least 30 minutes while we went down below in the underwater viewing pods to watch them swimming under the water! This was amazing to see! We also went to the front of the boat and watched them swim on the surface as fast as the boat and could hear and get splashed by them taking breaths! Yes, this tour was more expensive than others but it was well worth it! It was our favorite activity of the week! At the end they printed a large 8x10 picture of your group surrounded by all the marine life we saw (professional close-up photos) for $15 or you can purchase it digital! When we compared online the sightings counts for this tour and others Capt. Dave's sees many more whales for some reason so we decided on the tour based on that originally. We would come back again and again for that and many other reasons now! Thank you so much Captain Dave's!

This was our second trip with Captain Dave’s. We didn’t get to see any whales on our first trip (Oct ‘19) but saw hundred of playful dolphins.

This trip we had Captain Tom and he was excellent. He knew how to assess where the unpredictable whale would surface and we got some great photos and memories.

Amazing! We understood that there are no guarantees when you go whale watching so we were content enjoy the ride and seem some dolphins. Captain Gary was a please to be with. He happily stopped the boat and retrieved our hat when it blew into the water :-) We we’re enjoying a pod of bottle nose dolphins when Captain Gary received a message about a blue whale sighting in the area.

How much of this perfect thank experience can I place on Capt. Dave’s crew, Chuck & Stacey? The answer is I could never know for certain but I’m going to guess most of it, outside of the weather.

On a beautiful, sunny day in October, I would have been happy with seeing a few dolphin and enjoying a leisurely boat ride around Dana Point. Instead we got to see Twitch the humpback whale, and ho hung out with us for at least 30 min. We saw him breach, blow, deep dive many times over. With him we’re hundreds of common dolphin, all providing a show for us onlookers.
Then we were treated to a school of bottlenose dolphin who were very active and continued providing one of the best sea life shows I’ve seen.

Capt. Chuck & Stacey were so good. Courteous, easy, fun and really worked to position our catamaran at the best possible point for sea life interaction.

This was such a treat! I’d book Capt. Dave’s cruises any day of the year. Hands down the best experience of its type for us.

Captain Gary made for a perfect excursion . A knowledgeable guide with a marine background made for an interactive experience that was educational , fun and exciting . We saw whales ( at least 20 sightings ), dolphins ( hundreds , frolicking) and 3 sea lions who were chilaxing on a buoy . Critical was his coordination with other boats to share coordinates of the animals . The stars were aligned ! Yay!!

We had so much fun on our whale/dolphin expedition. Captain Maria and her crew were so knowledgeable about the area, and about whales and dolphins. We saw one whale, which we stayed with for awhile, and hundreds of dolphins. You can tell the crew is passionate about what they do, and about the ecology of the area. We highly recommend sailing with the Capt. Dave crew. Can't wait to go again and take our grandchildren.

I took my 90 year old mother to attend the 4th of July fireworks with Captain Dave's on the Hoku Nai, which Gunner (2nd mate) said was Hawaiian for "Dolphin Star." She was concerned but I wasn't having previous experience on this boat (the fabulous airshow) and crew, always helpful and polite. The mobility challenged were allowed on first and Gunner and Will (first mate) helped my mom and others up the stairs, Very friendly and kind. Mom got a nice comfy seat and I was able to move around to get favorite views of the multiple fireworks shows up and down the coast. The DP show was fabulous and very close and I enjoyed mine with a cup of chardonnay served by amiable bartender Tabitha. Only one sadness, she ran out of hot chocolate that my mom requested, but tried to come up with other options. Captain Alex, also awesome, coming out to engage with us, sharing what was happening and keeping us safe and still in the lumpy water just outside the harbor. Take advice to bring blankets and wear layers, it can be chilly.

One suggestion is to get rid of the plastic cups and use more sustainable paper cups. If they end up in the ocean they will biodegrade. Thank you for that consideration, and the great 4th of July evening !

Thanks for the fantastic review, Dawn! It's excellent that you and your mom had a blast on our special 4th of July fireworks trip. I'm glad you found our Captain and crew to be friendly and welcoming - but I'm sorry we ran out of hot chocolate! And we appreciate your suggestion about the cups. We will definitely consider that for future trips. Thank you again for coming out, and for rating us so highly. We hope you can join us again soon!
