Get a state park pass if you visit frequently. At $15 a visit it can add up. There are huge parking lots with a short walk to the beach. Pretty much this is a high life guard beach. There's a large surfing family vibe. Most...More

The beach has great picnic areas and a nice long sandy beach. It is patrolled regularly by lifeguards, which adds to the safety of the beach. Lots of places for the children to play on the beach as well as surfing. My only warning is...More

A popular place to camp, holiday, surf. There is a really good campsite. I would not chose to visit this place again. It was pretty enough but very busy. There are beautiful views of the ocean at sunset. You can whale watch.

This beach is surrounded by a rock jetty to prevent large waves so the waves are relatively small. There are picnic areas and shaded tree areas as well. Great place to picnic, BBQ and spend a day at the beach.

This is a really nice beach. Has great area for families. Near the harbor and fun to watch the boats come and go. Beach does have some areas where there are water hazards.

Doheny is a great walk. Park for free in the harbor and walk all the way to beach road. Flat and simple it’s still as classic as it was in the Jimmy Buffett song. With the right Southerly it’s a long boarders paradise.

A really boring place, with no place to walk and expensive parking. If you've never seen the ocean before, you would probably like it.

Yes, you are permitted to have alcohol in your campsite only. You cannot walk around the beach or campground, but must remain in your campsite.

Rent a car vs. cab from the airport (2 Replies)
Hey! We're staying at the Double Tree right there on Doheny State Beach for a wedding at the Ritz Carlton. We were planning on taking a cab for all the wedding activities anyway, so we're debating if we even need a car. I figure that to rent a car it'll be about $200 for our trip including the outrageous $22/day parking cost at the Double Tree. To take the cab from the airport it would be about $140 round trip. So, it'll be cheaper to take a cab and not rent. BUT... is there enough for us to...More

Just got back from a bike ride down to Dana Point Harbor, noticed the campground at Doheny State Beach was empty.Turns out it was closed.Looks like a bomb went off there.Lots of damage from the last storm.Downed trees, sand all over the roads. The bike trail between Doheny and Capo Beach park has about 6 inches of sand covering it.Rangers said it will be closed about a week to allow for clean-up and repairs. The day use area south of the campground was closed also. I read that the Harbor of Dana Point is slated for redevelopment. Has it started yet? Or, is it completed? Will redevelopment affect events at Doheny State Beach this spring? How can I find out the status of the redevelopment? Thanks.

Thank you for your response!! I read with interest the article. My vote goes to the boaters and residents in the area, but then again, I usually am on the side of the under-dog-- (as if anyone living near such beauty and nature etc etc. in CA is an under-dog!!) I'm off my soapbox now.
