- nicoletravelerArnold, Maryland91 contributionsGo to the Snail Farm - It's fun!My son and I ended up with an extra half day in Heraklion. We decided to visit the Snail Farm because we figured we'd never have another opportunity to see one. It was a great afternoon. The snails were interesting, but the owners were fascinating. We sat with them for several hours, chatting about Greek life. This was a highlight of our Cretan vacation.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 5, 2024
- Sherpa8238213 contributionsUnexpectedly Pleasant Experience of Snail Farm!We stumbled upon this farm quite by accident, simply by following a sign marked "Snail Farm & Fun." It was off-season, so we weren't sure it would be open, but luckily it was. The owner greeted us enthusiastically and gave us a tour of the farm, where the snails are kept, fed, and bred. He then made an interesting presentation about snails, the creatures we knew nothing about, and even showed some very rare examples of snails (one in a million he said!) Not only was he enthusiastic, but apparently he's a true innovator, constantly experimenting in search of better methods to grow these capricious creatures. It was all delightful, and we'd highly recommend visiting the farm, especially if you're with kids. The farm is located near Tylissos village, which has its own archaeological site. If you're in the area do consider a tour to the Snail Farm!Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 21, 2024
- Carmen G1 contributionA wonderfully beautiful experience🐌We spent a wonderful afternoon at the snail farm. Stavros and Vaso gave us a very warm welcome and told us a lot about the snails and the farm. In addition to the snails, there are also chickens, cats, dogs and a diverse vegetable patch. The farm is on the mountain and from there you have a great view of Heraklion and the surrounding mountain landscape. We recommend that everyone come here at least once and take some time. For us, it was unexpectedly one of the most beautiful experiences here on Crete.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 11, 2024
- FredValkenswaard57 contributionsSnail farm that you should see at least once.We have been coming to Crete for years, but this was only our first visit to the snail farm. Located in the mountains just behind Heraklion. The ride itself is fun. We were welcomed by Vaso. Very friendly, humorous but also knowledgeable woman. Location and information are really worth it. A location to go with a small group or with children.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 29, 2024
- Betty A6 contributionsA beautiful cultural experience in CreteMe and my boyfriend were staying in Agia Pelagia and saw a sign for snail farm and fun! We were instantly intrigued so drove our quad bike there. Beautiful views on the way! We expected to maybe see some giant snails and hold them but actually it was an incredible farm. We were greeted by the nicest lady ever who gave us a tour and told us many interesting things about snails and the farm. We stayed there for awhile and chatted with the lady. The whole experience was so fun and I definitely recommend. It was lovely to experience a real cultural part of Crete. Thank you, Love Betty and Phil :)Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 31, 2024
- Gabriele S1 contributionHighly recommended trip!We arrived at this very original place in our car in the morning and were given a very warm welcome! We were shown everything and it was really interesting to hear how the snails are bred! The farm is a bit out of the way, but it's easy to get there by car! So this trip was definitely worth it!Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 31, 2024
- Mike5 contributionsWarm and interesting experienceWhat was planned as a short trip turned out to be an approximately 3 hour stay on the snail farm, with lots of interesting information on snail breeding, keeping chickens and agriculture. However, the warmth and hospitality of Stavlos stood out. We have felt very welcome. A clear Recommendation, also to get impressions of the island from a local. We like to come back and greetings go out to Stavos and his wife, whom we were unfortunately not allowed to get to know.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 11, 2024
- Hanna A2 contributionsUnforgettable experience! An unforgettable experience at Snail Farm and fun! During our visit to Snail Farm and Fun we had an exceptional time. The warm welcome of our host made our visit even more memorable. We had the chance to learn a lot about snail life through a clear and exciting explanation. We exchanged with our host about our respective lives, which made the experience even more special and authentic. These moments of sharing were simply beautiful. The setting is splendid, authentic and imbued with the natural beauty of Crete. It is a place that we will never forget and that we highly recommend to anyone looking to discover the true essence of Crete. If you are looking for a unique and rewarding experience, Snail Farm and fun is a must!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 29, 2024
- Pleun3 contributionsRecommendedWe really enjoyed our visit to the snail farm! Super sweet and welcoming people. Definitely recommended to visit during your visit to Crete. Also learned a lot from Faso, she gave super clear and nice explanations about how things work on the snail farm. Thank you so much!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 30, 2024
- Erwin HMaastricht, The Netherlands252 contributionsBack to basic and a very nice experience richer.Very nice activity. The owners are super friendly and explain everything well. Don't expect everything to be perfectly arranged, according to the labels. But everything is really fine. The explanation is clear, you learn a lot from it. But do take some time for the surprise. Small children also get their gear. Everything has been thought of, but in a "basic" way. So if you want something different from the mass tourism and just have a nice experience, you should definitely visit here, if you are already in the area. Very cordial people.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 13, 2024

While driving the rural roads on Crete we came across a sign which said ‘Snail farm and fun’ and it instantly made us curious about the place so we decided to follow the lovely hand painted signs.
When we arrived at the snail farm, Vaso welcomed us with open arms and gave us a tour on the farm. We had a wonderful time with Vaso, who told us so much about snails and how they grow and live. Her explanations were incredibly engaging, and she showed us everything in great detail. After the tour, we relaxed on the terrace with a refreshing drink, and Vaso’s husband, Stavros, joined us for a delightful chat.
It was such an enjoyable afternoon, and we sincerely hope to visit them again in the future!
Vaso and Stavros, we wish you all the best and hope to see you again someday!

absolutly loved it, very interesring and informative, we learnt more about snails than we could imagine and was very intreigued by it.
we were welcomed with open arms and offered food and drink and spent some time interacting with the hosts Vasso and Stavros whilst our children (6 and 12 years old) played and did oil paintings of the snails and sunset.
it felt like home away from home within minuites of being there.
100% recommend going to see this place you wont regret it.

On the way back to Heraklion airport, we made a quick detour to the snail farm and learned lots of interesting facts about the Cretan snails (close relatives of the Roman snails), their life in nature and on the farm, and took a look at the amazingly simple farm. The snails live outside in their natural environment for part of the year, even though they cannot move freely there, of course, because it is a farm.
Now I also know why snails are on the menu in almost every restaurant I have been to on Crete.
Vaso greeted us extremely friendly, warm and hospitable and really enthusiastically told us about her chosen life as a snail farmer.
This little stopover is really a worthwhile destination. If you have children with you, the experience will be even greater.
I would love to come back, even if the snails in the boxes will probably be fully grown by then and have been on the menu in some restaurant on the island.

This was such an interesting turn of events! My family of 8 (age range of 30-73) decided to make a detour after seeing the signs plastered along the highways. We were curious what a snail farm is really all about. Not only were our curiosities satiated, but this visit really exceeded our expectations!
Vasso was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable and it was a real pleasure to see the kind of work they are doing here!
One thing I can recommend is to bring some money for donations to the farm in advance!

This couple is amazing, welcoming, and has made the snails their lives. The climate has been harsh on the commercial aspect of the business. But, they are optimistic about rebuilding their snail population, and it’s fascinating to visit and see how the snails are bred. A DEFINITE must-see while in/near Heraklion.

We had heard from people that you should definitely go here to learn something about snails. When we were in the area we went up a kind of country road with a 🐌🐌 corridor to park on the plot. Vaso, the hostess, came to meet us. With great passion she started to talk about the life of the snail. This was very interesting as we knew absolutely nothing about it. They had even created an experimental natural habitat to see if they would reproduce there. After the tour we were offered something to drink, and she even wanted to make us something to eat, but we had just had breakfast at our hotel. We got real Greek coffee and a bowl of Greek yogurt with home-made orange syrup. That was wonderful. We talked for a while afterwards and gave a little something. As a thank you, we received a beautiful ballpoint pen from their farm as a souvenir.
All in all, highly recommended if you want to know something about snails and the hospitality of Crete. Many people in the Netherlands can still learn something from this!!

This was not what we were expecting. It's very intimate. It feels like you are a guest in someone's home. We were immediately greeted when we got out of the car. Another family was just leaving so we had the full attention of the host. He showed us the snails and chickens. Then we went to a shack and covered area while the children played. It felt like we were personal guests on a homestead. There were no prices listed so we just tipped what we thought was OK.

We discovered the farm by chance on a rainy day in May 2023 and were warmly welcomed, including an umbrella, by the owner Stavros and his wife. The facility is very great, in a secluded location, emphasis is placed on sustainability, with its own vegetable and fruit cultivation, olives, wine, etc. We received a detailed and informative tour of snail farming, both outdoors and in the covered huts. A MUST for every Crete holidaymaker!

Absolutely loved our time at the snail farm. It certainly was fun too! Vassa was an incredible host, so welcoming, funny and informative. Who knew there was so much to learn about snails!
We were 2 adults and we had a great time, doesn’t need to be a kids activity at all! A great few hours out, would 100% recommend stopping by the snail farm!
