The title on Tripadvisor is misleading. This picture is an entrance to the Sweetwater Regional park/trails between Main Street and Imperial Beach exits of Interstate 5. I will write about the park and the Salt Works. The park is ideal for daytime bicycling or hiking. The the river valley was once very heavily populated with a derelict homeless population and many still hover on the outskirts behind the Home Depot on Saturn Blvd. Don't let that stop you from enjoying a wonderful park wedged between South San Diego and the southern border of Chula Vista. The park is safest during daylight hours. There are a combination of decomposed granite and loose gravel paths/trails ideal for bicycles with wider tires. There are several ponds to watch birds from and you might get to see other indigenous wildlife along your trek. This is in my backyard and close to the Bayshore bikeway bicycle path that circles much of San Diego Bay. Try it on a mountain bikes or hybrid bikes with dirt treads. Parts of the trails are narrow single track and others are wide enough to ride side by side. I don't recommended it for single speed beach cruisers due to some short steep climbs. You may find yourself walking your bike at times. There are several entrances with off street parking along Main Stree corridor and access from other streets that go north to south across the valley. The Salt works is an active operation that harvests and processes sea salt from the southern end of San Diego Bay. You can view the ponds from the trail that goes East and West from Imperial Beach to Swiss Park at the western end of Main Street in Chula Vista. They remind me of salt ponds in South East Asia. Majestic views of the Bay, the Coronado Bridge (on a clear Day) and sometimes part of the downtown skyline. Enjoy the park, salt works and the bike path.

We take our guests to the South Bay Salt Works because you do not see a salt works in actual progress any more but here. Amazing to see how they harvest the salt.

South Bay Salt Works is a private business which you can view from the street or trail. There is no trespassing allowed at the Salt Works and it is not an attraction. At first I was confused thinking this listing of an attraction meant the business itself and didn't realize it was referring to the Bayshore Bikeway bike trail that can be accessed just south of the salt works. Although I did read during one month in winter access is permitted to the salt works for viewing birds and that the trail provides really pretty sunset pictures. The attraction should really be titles Bayshore Bikeway.

We went to see the salt ponds and such which you can see from the road. This is really just a bike trail or a small "park". I wouldn't suggest going alone and it was an interesting place. The salt works you can only see from the street but are nice to visualize.

My family came over here from Europe and i brought them here, they totally enjoyed the walks and the scenery, we even had a picnic at the dining table, was so much fun and entertaining. I also liked the way they posted about the wildlife habitat here throughout the park.

Bike, walk by or drive by one of two of the oldest business in the County of San Diego. The building was built in 1916 and is still in operation today. At one time there was 32 salt ponds. The plant is a neighbor to the South San Diego Bay Wildlife National Refuge. The wildlife refuge is home to several endangered birds which live and feed in the salt ponds. This area is incredible to film or take pictures when the sun is setting. The salt ponds create imagines with beautiful colors in the ponding water. The salt works plant is on the South Bay Bike Way and not far from the Otay Valley Regional Trail Head.

We went during a day that was overcast and the whole area appeared quite grim and dreary, would be much nicer on a clear and bright day. It’s a private property so best to do side street parking and walk.

This offers a secret walking trail on the water. The salt beds offer a myriad of colors depending on the time of day. Watch out for cyclists.
