Having visited Carmel a few times, we finally visited Scenic Road. To get there take Ocean Road towards the Carmel Beach Boardwalk and then make a left on Scenic Road. It was a one way road that ended at the Carmel River Beach. The drive started in a typical residential neighborhood until it opened up on the right side with views of the Pacific Ocean. We found lots of parking as we drove and periodically got out to walk along the well maintained and paved path. Less people here so good social distancing was maintained compared to Ocean Avenue.
Small beaches appeared as well as rocky points with waves crashing. Monterey pine trees lined the roadways but some of the multimillion dollar homes caught our attention. Certainly built to enjoy the maximum viewing of the ocean and salty air. Some were tiny cottages while others were mansions.
Well worth the side trip if you have time.

Located along Scenic Road starting at the bottom of Ocean Avenue this is an easy walk that overlooks the Pacific on the west and beautiful houses on the east. We walked all the way to a park at the end of the road and from our lodging in Carmel it was a 4.14 mile walk. The day was clear and the views are excellent. Recommended!

It truly is a beautiful place to walk or drive. I saw dolphins swimming as I walked along. In my opinion if you are here visiting the pacific grove ocean view drive is a better drive and walk. If you live in the area this is a beautiful place to take a walk.

The scenic road walkway is a delight. There are many benches Along the way to make a stop and enjoy the panoramic ocean view. Surfers are a joy to watch and you can head down to the beach if so inspired. We had a glorious and sunny shirt sleeve day that made it that much more enjoyable. Walk, relax, or get wet. This is a major part of what makes Carmel special.

This was so good, we drove it twice! One way super scenic drive. Gorgeous homes overlooking the beach, lots of street parking if you wish to walk along the road or beach. The homes and views were truly stellar.

On a sunny day— spectacular walk, no matter how far you go. I like a ling walk down to FLWright home & Butterfly House & Tor House/ Hawk Tower, all in same block. At any point, you can head diwn to beach

Best walk ever. Nice, level foot path (compact dirt/gravel) with full view of gorgeous ocean, calming sound of waves, lots of benches along the way to rest or ponder as needed. Walker can walk beyond the walkway, on Scenic Rd itself, for a longer walk. Cars drive slowly. If weather is nice, the walk will fill your spirit! Of interest are also the beautiful homes along Scenic Dr. I loved every minute and every step, and enjoyed resting on a bench after my walk to take it all in!

This was a beautiful walk. We parked at the lot on the north end of the drive and started our walk on the beach walking south. At the FLW house (as far as you can really go on the beach), we climbed the stairs and walked along the road past the Butterfly House to where the road curves. We walked back on the street so we could see all the homes. There are a number of places to climb down to the rocks as well as stairs for beach access. There’s small restroom in the vicinity of the FLW house (on the road) that was surprisingly clean for a beach restroom. Roundtrip it was about 3 miles.

Everywhere you look, a postcard view. This is the best walking path on planet earth (in our humble opinion). Stroll, breathe deeply, sit on one of the many beautifully-placed benches, watch the ocean and dream. A refreshment to the spirit and an unforgettable glimpse of how the 1% live. TIP: The best views are behind you, if you walk with the traffic (ocean on your right). We like to start from the other direction and walk with the ocean on our left.

Where exactly does the walk way start and end?

It starts at the bottom of Ocean avenue. The walk parallels the paved road along the Pacific. It appears to end at a park a few miles away. There is a parking lot in this area with a few porta potties. We made this an out and back walk and it was easy and beautiful. Sorry for the long delay in responding.

Can you drive through the area & still get a good view or walking is mandatory? What apart from beautiful homes is visible here? I intend to get elders and a lot of walking might not be possible!

A reviewer called Kitty suggested walking the opposite way to get the best views I guess it would help because you would be facing the oncoming traffic so it would be safer too. Can anyone tell me where to start the walk from this direction please?

I can say when we walked next to the ocean the traffic is one way and we faced the traffic the entire time. When we walked in the residential there was very little traffic so there was n o issue there either. So really traffic is not a problem. The only possible small problem I can see with the traffic is when you walk by the Mission and need to cross the street. But that was even little traffic.. When my wife and I did the walk the traffic was not an issue since the majority of the traffic is one way.

The start of the scenic walk or drive is at lower Ocean Ave and Scenic Rd, at the top of the parking lot for Carmel Beach. Follow Scenic Rd south all the way around along the ocean to Carmel State Beach. Then Scenic Rd turns into Camelo St that takes you back to town. The first home on the water side of the scenic walk was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Check Mapquest for scenic walk. I have walked scenic walk many times, but now drive it as a senior. Enjoy the Scenic Walk!
