What not to expect: New York Broadway experience. Duh.

What to expect: intimate theatre experience with no peanut gallery seating although concessions serve up refreshments for regular price.

Be forewarned: parking is not convenient. And it's a residential neighborhood with some cranky people who are prone to complaining.

Pacific Repertoire, a local company, plays here with notable guest stars. They keep it fun and entertaining, family friendly.

Concessions sells wine (obviously, you are in Carmel, California) as well as coffee and treats such as handrolled local truffles. On this occasion, they had Italian ice tubes (grown up version of otterpops.) Soda is poured into cups because the cans make a lot of noise, and yes, you can take the refreshments with you into the theatre.

Casual, fun, and expect to meet people from everywhere, locals and visitors, newcomers and old timers. Far better than some latest Hollywood drivel.

I loved the small, cozy atmosphere, yet they have all the amenities. This theater has many special memories for me. No real drawbacks. I highly recommend it.

I'm a local and am consistently amazed at the wonderful plays put on by this small theater. I just saw "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" and rate it an A+. There were people in the audience who had seen the London & NYC productions and said that this was at least as good or better!

We were visiting Carmel and saw an advertisement for performance of "Peter and the Starcatcher" at the Golden Bough. We enjoy supporting local theater productions and thoroughly appreciated the fine performance presented. There are good seats throughout the theater and refreshments were available for purchase. The theater was a bit warm, but not uncomfortable. Glad we decided to attend the production!

Would you believe I loved Mary Poppins? Strange thing is I saw the movie in Manaus, Brazil when it first came out. I only mention that as I think it is weird to remember. I never imagined it on the stage.

Anyway, the show, as almost always, was terrific. How they could find such a perfect Mary Poppins is beyond me. It is like they had mixed a magic potion and out of the pot popped up the perfect Mary Poppins. Backed by an enthusiastic cast of pros and local enthusiasts the show received a rousing reception from the audience.

Where else can you attend professional theater in a town with fewer than 4,000 residents other than Carmel-by-the-Sea. Over the years I have preferred the Circle Theater productions, the basement site of the Golden Bough, as Pac Rep takes more risks there producing provocative and controversial works.

Circle Theater highlights for me have been Sylvia, Nixon's Nixon and Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Whether you are local or a visitor, always check was is playing at the Pac Rep' Golden bough or Circle theater and be sure not to miss it.

I frequent this theater and am always impressed with the quality of the productions. I go to shows in NYC and I think many of our local talent could be on Broadway. The tickets for the shows are always reasonable and it is a way to spend a fun night out. The theater is close enough to Carmel to grab a bite before or after a show in one of the many fine restaurants. If you are attending a show at night, be sure to bring a flashlight. Parking is on the street, and there are no street lights.

When planning a trip to Carmel, I always to check if the Golden Bough Playhouse will have any Broadway-type performances. Its small size, mostly local patrons, volunteer staff, old art posters contribute to the cozy warmth of a performance here by the Pacific Repertory Theatre.

Typically PacRep is wonderful. We've been to at least 30 plays between their two theaters, Golden Bough and the outdoor forest theater. We've had friends and family perform in some of their shows and we've even donated money to them. Last night I attempted to buy tickets online through their vendini site as well as the ticket link from their Facebook page but neither were working. I attempted to buy tickets online again today but to no avail so I called the box office.

The woman at the box office was very short with me. I told her that we needed five tickets and then asked if my 1 year old needed a ticket because he would be sitting on my lap. (We went to a show there when he was two months without a ticket but when he was about 3 months and in a car seat, they told us we had to buy a ticket for him so I wasn't sure if it was just because he was in a car seat or if they always charge for everyone and someone had overlooked it the previous time) the woman at the box office told me that everyone must buy a ticket regardless of age and that they weren't allowing anyone under two to come to the show because it's 2.5 hours long and has loud noises. I explained to her that my son has been to 7 plays in his 1 year as well as movies, ballets, baseball games, and universal studios and has always been perfect. She was silent and then reiterated that "we are asking that no one under two come to the theater." It's really disappointing because we were bringing three additional kids with us that couldn't wait to see the show. I understand not wanting whinning, crying, or antsy kids in the theater but I think that two year olds are far more likely to behave that way than infants. It should be left to the parents discretion. Maybe say bring small children at your own risk but if they cry or are a distraction you will be asked to leave. I think it's very rude to say that you aren't allowing anyone under two especially with the history that we have with the theater. It really puts a bad taste in my mouth!

Pac Rep is a locally created and owned theatrical company that produces excellent plays and musicals of high quality that one has come to expect from Stephen Moorer and his company of actors and musicians.
