Carmel-by-the-Sea institution that people have been going to since childhood. Still charms them today.

Quaint building.
However, it was between breakfast and lunch and we just wanted a coffee and something small to eat. We informed the waitress of what we wanted to which she replied that they were a full service restaurant and didn't serve coffee and suggested that we should go to a coffee shop. There were very few patrons in the restaurant but it didn't stop us feeling really embarrassed and leaving with our tails between out legs.

The eggs were the most fresh I've ever had. I never thought I would write about eggs I've eaten, but these were truly the best I've ever had. The homemade jams and scones are a must. I never had lola berry before but this jam is so wonderful I had to buy a jar.
The setting is lovely - looks like a hobbit house or a house in the Cotswolds in south central England. It was an excellent way to start the day.

All that is missing is for Bilbo Baggins to be sitting in the door way, smoking his long pipe. But you really gotta go to New Zealand for that (the actual film set, that is). Carmel is defined by the variety of character-filled structures and The Tuck Box is just one of the many. And who do we have to thank for this?

Historically, this quaint cottage dates back to 1927 and is a Hugh Comstock design. The structure behind the Tuck Box is also his creation (as are many more in town). Look for fairy-tale looking structures and more likly than not, you'll have stumbled upon one of his cottages. They should be declared national treasures!

During our early January 2019 visit, the shop was closed (even shop owners need some down-time) but their signture scones are rumored to be something else! Bigger than the usual scone, it's nearly the size of a plate. This scone's texture is much lighter; its origins are Scottish, not English.

In the late 1800's Architect Comstock traveled from Illinois to Carmel where he met and married someone who inspired (and drew inspiration from) his quirky side. He met Mayotta Browne (the designer of a popular rag and felt doll called the Otsy-Totsy), who would become his life-long muse.

Carmel is unique, thanks to the creative spark of Mr. Comstock's imagination.

Iconic place, one of the Doll's Houses, the whole interior is charming, little tables with copper tops, fresh flowers in teapots.
