The mission and the grounds are very picturesque. Many of my photos came out beautiful. Of course I also enjoyed learning the history of the mission and seeing the many artifacts on display too. We almost did not stop, but I am very glad that we did.

I've been to only 4 of the missions in CA, but this is my favorite so far. They spent no effort and money to renovate this important monument, they even retrofitted it. We were in and out within the hour with the church docent enlightning us about the history of the church. The mission has a few rooms where they... More

Beautiful Mission Church in lovely Carmel By the Sea. Attended Sunday Mass and witnessed children receiving first Holy Communion. Tiny cathedral so the overflow stood in the courtyard for Mass. Nice small Mission Museum on site. Lovely gardens, beautifully preserved.

This is an old Franciscan mission started in 1770. There is a relatively brief video in one of the outbuildings that explains the founding of the mission as well as others in California. The mission church and the surrounding quadrangle and gardens are large and attractive. It is an interesting introduction to California history

This restored California mission is an outstanding example of the chain of missions established from San Diego (and even Baja) to Northern California. Having fallen into disrepair, reconstruction was begun in the 1920's, and it has been beautifully restored. It is an active church with museum-like qualities and numerous examples of the short-lived Spanish Californio tradition. Very much worth a... More
