I live here and have gone to the is beach many times but tourists beware. This beach is a people eater and I mean it. The incidence of "rouge" waves at this beach is high and every year several tourists, children and adults as well as experienced divers are tragically pulled in by one of the unexpected waves and drown.... There should be better and larger signage! Too many people have drowned here! Ask anyone from Carmel and they will verify this. All too sad because it is really lovely, right next to Pt Lobos and looks so very inviting. Beware!!

Monastery Beach is right along highway one and is a scenic beach. It is just north of Point Lobos State Reserve area. Parking is free but limited as one parks by the road. As I was there midweek this time, I had no problems finding a spot. Going to this beach is also free. The reason for the beach being... More

Nicknamed Mortuary Beach because of all the tragic accidents that have taken place here, this is a beautiful beach. The water, however, is dangerous and you should exercise great care if you decide to go in. Many drownings in the area.

Really nice beach right off of Highway 1. Its nickname with locals is Mortuary beach, because of all of the drownings there. If you are not a strong swimmer or experienced surfer, please don't go in the water and watch your kids and pets. Multiple drownings in families on the same day plague that spot. So be careful!

A nice beach a couple of miles south of Carmel. It has a very steep drop off just offshore, so be careful if you go into the water.

Lovely views and pristine sand but dangerous waves. Many tourist don't heed the warning signs. Rouge waves are a regular here. Don't turn your back to the water.

Easily accessible when driving down towards Big Sur on Highway 1. This beach is across from the Benedictine Nun Monastery. While the views are breathtaking, the beach is really not sandy, but pebbly, which makes it for a less than great experience, even for those who just want to beachcomb, I would rather drive to the Carmel Beaches where the... very nice scenery. locals warn visitors not to go inside the water because it's too dangerous. But walking on the beach is recommended.
